Forgot what a stir Pain Stain created as well, also loved Music To My Heart by Patti although apparently not to everyone's taste. Ghost In My House rocked the whole scene not just the Mecca, can imagine a few looks of horror if someone tried that now, Let's Go Somewhere also got quite a few plays and not forgetting Debbie Dean also went down a storm. Frankie Beverly anyone? Baby Mine Thelma Houston. Let Her Go may have been the Cats (again, [wish I'd gone there at least once]), first for me there though.

My most memorable Mecca tune is the Gladys Knight & the Pips, "Aint no sun since you been gone" LP track. Blew me away totally. Levine had it covered up, and it took me bloody ages to find out which LP it was on. I always used to play it at the Magnet in 74, and it went down a storm there as well. 

But 1972 and 1973 were probably the very best two years the Northern scene ever had. I swear that at one point we must have been hearing two or three new monster sounds every single week. In addition to the ones already mentioned, there's stuff like James Bounty, Sherrys, Sam & Kitty, Cooperettes, and so many, many more. And every single one of them has stood the test of time. Also in addition to what has already been stated, did we hear all these first at the Mecca, the Torch, the Cats, or the Pendulum? I think many of us will have heard them all for the first time at different venues. For example, to me, the Velvets is always associated with the Pendulum, never anywhere else. A very long time ago, and the memory dims more each passing year. Much of it now being no more than a particularly enjoyable blur. (And no, I'm sure the confusion is purely down to advanced years, and has absolutely nothing to do with the ingestion of copious amounts of prescription medicines during adolescence).

Jerry Fuller - Double life. Herbert Hunter - IWBTLY. The Crow - YAOT. And yes, were all played at venues at the same time.

Wow, fantastic array of tunes and memories, I was brought up in Blackpool and at 15 had a part time job on the burger and hot dog van
under the Mecca, edge of the Car Park, my early memories were seeing wide eyed youngsters clutching records. chewing and chatting a lot !
Curiosity got the better of me and I was soon in there to see what it was all about, that led on to seeing the Wigan bound coach outside so
of course I ended up discovering the Casino - The rest is history as they say

Having left Blackpool and travelled and worked around the UK and USA for a period I finally settled back "down south" and due to the lack of
decent sized dancefloor events in London and area started what became the famous Teddington Nights and London Dome All dayer which
are both going strong after 8 years, then the Soul Galore Weekender in Folkestone for 2 years.

Ian Levine has played his rare soul set at Teddington to an amazing response and Colin Curtis (Dimond) at Soul Galore (Modern Room).

Was thinking (dreaming) about how great and memorable it would be if we could get them both back together for a Mecca Special down South,
for all the "Northern" imigrants like me that live down there now lol and some of the Southerners that travelled up to the Mecca back in the day,
so we could relive those great nights, it would also be a music education for some of the younger people who did not/could not go as well.

What do you think ?

was this the one on the Nitty Gritty LP, the one with Keep An Eye, The Stranger etc? Only ask 'cos it was also on a later LP

Think if memory serves me right it was also on the "Help me make it through the night" album. Thats what I had it on.

Yep, that's the one. Cracker of a tune. The studio version is much better though. Used to sort the men from the boys when sandwiched between "Looky Looky" and "Devil with a blue dress".
