Hi All,

Wed the 17th of March see's the start of a six week series of Northern Soul with Stuart Maconie on radio 2 also available on Sky 852 tonight is an interview with Kev Roberts, the show on the 24th of March has a Stafford tribute with Dave Thorley and Keb Darge, 31st is a profile of woman DJ's with Jo Wallace,

While I am on the subject of Soul on the airwaves did anyone see "Live with Johnnys" on BBC3 Sky ch115 His guest for the evening being Mr Geogre Benson, he asked Mr Benson had he heard of Northern Soul Music ? Geogre looks blank, he tells Geogre the term Northern Soul was coined by Dave Godin back in 69ish he then states his show are big supporters of the soul scene and he tells Geogre that it all started at clubs like the Twisted Wheel and Night Owl? and his big mate Peter Stringfellow ran the Twisted Wheel? I think his researchers must have had a day off , lets hope when they get back to work Mr Vaughan you can ask them when Peter ran the Wheel and when the Club NIGHT OWL opened and and where was it?

TV presenters love N-Soul but do they know much about it?

Saw it. I think the name he gave Godin was actually 'Grodin'...before continuing to spout, as you say, woefully badly 'researched' inaccuraccies dusted off with a seemingly forced momentary adoration of the music, all the time peppered with faux sincerity whilst his producer fed him yet more misinformation. Poor old George probably didn't know what the f**k was going on...made even more apparent when grappling around for the name of a good white Soul Singer (Mike McDonald you can forgive)...Michael Bolton (when they collectively got there in the end) you definately can't!

Just came across as all a bit too arbitrary to be believeable.

WHY, are people still getting away with getting it all so wrong? On the plus side though, with tracks like those, at least we won't suffer loads of handbaggers coming along for a listen down the 100 club on Saturday ;-)))

This was posted to me by Bernadette using the "report post" instead of the "add reply" which is easily done

So reposted it here

Here you go

Hi Sid got a phone call on monday night by Bob who runs the venue at hindley, he asked if we could do him a favour and could we turn up and speak to George Benson via satellite and bring a record box,as it was in connect with the northern soul scene

we arrived and couldn't believe our eyes Line Dancing, went to speak to Bob I think he was as gobsmacked as us, the film crew [if that's what you could call them that] said they would like us to ask George some questions which they had written, know they didn't have a clue of what they were talking about, Sid said we may as well do as we were all ready there

they lined 8 of us up with our supposedly questions in front of a cameraman, with a guy stood on a pair of ladders holding a disco ball, we couldn't hear what was going on in the studio ???

they stopped the Line Dancers to do the so called interview don't think they were very pleased [but they did get a £1 off their admission what a joke and after the interview they told them to enjoy the rest of the night] there were a few soulies turned up think they were attending a soul night some even brought record

boxes

so we were all as bemused as poor george and if thats what the Johnny what ever show is about forget it,

yeeehaaa what a night ???

And on the subject of 'All Singing etc' we at the Plinston feature on the 'Floorfillers' spot on the 7th April where Taff and myself supply 4 goodies to wet the soulful taste buds - we had to fight hard not to include Michael Bolton in the set but it was a toss up between including him or praising the Godlike Dale Grodin! For those that are interested the tracks we supplied were Lou Lawton, The Oxford Knights, The Pioneers and Richard Caiton. Enjoy and hopefully people will get a better understanding of what we all mean when we say it's a Rare Soul Scene, I.E: rare in quality, not just quantity!

That made me sit up. Just as Keb has finshed saying how the Casino had gone downhill and were playing rubbish, on comes one of the top three most awful tracks played at Stafford. All it would have needed was The Airoplane song, and the ####ing Professionals (OK I know I just hate it), and they would have had the nap hand.

Nice to get a name check on the show though. Thanks to anonymous who called me 'Media Whore' I like that ;-)

Yes , just who advises supamac / bbc ?

Lots of poor records get played (& danced to) at venues over the years but shouldn't this cruddy radio 2 prog at least celebrate the good ones?

Give me crispy aromatic duck anytime.

Just like last week it can be embarrasing telling non soulie mates to listen & having 'em phone you telling "your" music is disco (last week) & total rubbish

this week. Peanut Duck , how could they?

Re Sid and Bernadettes post about the Monaco, afriend of mine phoned me at 6.15 just as I got home from work,

"Pete, get changed and get down to mine as we are going to a Soul night at the Monaco it's being filmed for the Johnny vaughn show, and bring some records"

So a very quick change, flew down to Als jumped in his car and arrived at the Monaco at 8.10, and yes there was a guy up a ladder with a glitter ball and about 8 soulies stood around, the room was indeed packed. On closer inspection it was definetly a Line Dancing Night, the "filming" ended at 8.15.

That was it....no soul night...lots of crossed wires...and then the speakers burst into life with T rex and Jitterbug boogie yehaaaaaaaa slap my thigh...time for a sharp exit :-) we were back in the house for 9.30.

Anyone checked out Mary Fox at radio Stoke on Trent? Had a listened last Friday and was impressed. Invitations-What's Wrong With Me Baby gets my vote everytime.
