Why Don't You Go To All Nighters?

I am always amazed at the amount of soul fans that are more than happy to click their fingers and mouse whilst sat in their computer room.

If there are such big soul fans then how come you don't go to the Nighters?

Now you all have choice and no one is looking down on people who don't do the nighters its just that I am curious as to why you don't go?

Too old, too tired, too far, too expensive?

I know there will be those who say, "been there done that", but how can you all say this yet be on Soul Source morning noon and night, surely if you are such big soul fans you would want to dance to the music and see the reaction of a crowd to the latest spins?

I am 46 and regularly go to alnighters yet manage to fulfil all of my reasonability's both financially and family so without meaning to sound too personal..........

do you really have to be an all=nighter regular to appreciate soul music or even be a soul music supporter, I'll turn the question on its head why do people have to go to niters to enjoy soul music?

1) would rather spend time with my family

1/grief off the missus

I'd rather attend evening do's and get to bed at a reasonable time, then I won't be spending the following day in bed whilst the wife and kids are attempting to wake me!

Another thing is the travelling, I can't be arsed to spend hours travelling up and down the country. Although if there was somewhere I wanted to attend, I'd probably try and incorporate it into a weekend away.

Totally agree.....I enjoy soul nights more than nighters, because people usually commit to that blast of energy. Most Allnighters fizzle off at 2ish , as people get more pissed. Also, same as Cookie, the music is mostly repetitive and boring! Some places you arrive and you know your doomed to a night of the same old battered tunes...depressing!!

Sorry but that is just a load of b*llocks! I've been doing a lot of nighters this year...and very few have been stale or boring and none have fizzled out at 2am.

Maybe you should actually try one in the next few months....pretty sure you'll be pleasantly surprised, assuming you go with an open mind.

Was going to ask exactly the same question myself...the answer is you don't

Lots of people enjoy Soul music...some completely oblivious to the scene...these people are quite happy to sit at home with a cd/computer listening to music...and why the hell not!?

Only people who care about the 'scene' are on the 'scene'

All other Soul fans are either indifferent or couldn't give a toss

My sentiments exactly - all of them!

I know plenty of people who've never been to a single allnighter and who never will, but who would queue up to pour scorn on any suggestion that not staying up all night to have a dance makes them any less of a fan than someone who does. Speaking for myself I've been to enough allnighters/weekenders/whatever in my time to be more selective about when and where I go out in middle age. Doesn't make me any less of a soul fan than I was in my youth...

Evenings out? Great! The occasional weekender? Bring it on! But as far as I'm concerned, the pleasure of spending as many waking Saturday and Sunday hours as I possibly can with wife and daughter far outweighs the, er, 'pleasure' of getting up around lunchtime every Sunday, after maybe 4 hours kip, and feeling like crap for the rest of the weekend...

I love nighters and do them regularly especially 100club and Burnley but not been to Wilton Ballroom, Middleton or Winsford for a while.(Sorry)

The atmosphere at nighters is different to soul nights and IMO the dj's dig in more at nighters. Only gets boring for me when certain records hit BIG and are played to death-played to death-played to death-played to death. Likes of Carol and Gerry-Carol and Gerry-Carol and Gerri-The Constallations-The Constollations-The Constallations-Pat and the Blenders-Pat and the Blenders-Pat and the Blenders.

Sometimes I think some of the dj's don't live on the same planet and they think we are robots .........and will automatically have to enjoy .........and dance when certain buttons are pushed ..........but I am not a robot..........I am not a number ..........and I am not a fool. YOU WILL NOT BRAINWASH ME.

Long live the unknowns and IMO underplayed great soul records. Wish I could afford more of 'em.

A\ I'm bored with them.

B\ I have a 13 yr old boy and don't think dad going of to nighters and coming back bungled is a good example to set.

C\ Don't like the fact that drinks are served all night at nighters - attracts numpties

Give me a bank holiday All-Dayer anytime at my age, I could still drink and dance all day at a push, a god nights sleep a full English the morning after and all's well in the world  .

I suppose I never really got back into going to all-nighters at all, well not since 83ish then I was going minimum four times a month but since I've been back into northern I've been to about four or five a year till this year have done only two and can't see myself attending any more this year, It's not the same old same old that stops me going (although I prefer to listen to a least some 60's I don't know) it's the two or three days of feeling like shit after that put me of  .

The scene is people going out week in week out to Soul dos across the country...I've got friends back in Wales who went to the Casino back in the day but havn't been to a do for 20 years plus...they don't miss it...they still have their cds and vinyl that they can listen to from the comfort of their own homes and they are quite happy to do that...doesn't mean they don't love soul music any less than someone who is out every weekend does it?

What i'm saying is the only people that care about what is going on in the nighters etc are people who go out to the aforementioned, Soul fans who have no interest in the social aspect of the music carry on oblivious.

apologies for the spelling I'm a thick twat... my point is I have no incliantion to support the UK niter scene it's an alien concept to me now.

I keep an eye on, it and occasionly get some reports however the idea of doing what some on here do every weekend at my age I find bizarre, not a crticism just an opinion.

I collect what I want, listen to what I want, go where I want and if some on here have a problem with that , tough shit

Kinnel, that's it then.....the nighter scene must be f**ked

Just a few points mind.......

1. You don't have to stay to the very end to enjoy a nighter....you can go home whenever you want, so the feeling shite and knackered for 3 days afterwards doesn't have to be the case.

2. On the same note, you don't have to get shitfaced on gear to enjoy nighters.

3. The music policy on most nighters will usually be predictable by the DJ line-up, the advertising, plus past events/word of mouth etc, so if you end up hearing the same old same old all night then you need to be a bit more selective on where you go.

4. Late bars don't result in numpties attending imo. Lack of suitably trained doorstaff (if any at all!) and advertising extensively via local media attracts them....personally think you get more numpties at soul nights on the whole cus they don't want to pay £10+ admission.

5. Be honest now folks, how many of those who have posted negative comments on this thread who also DJ, would attend a nighter if asked to do a set at 5 a.m. (quite a few I bet  )

The main thing that puts me off is I have two small kids who like to get up very early in the morning, and I'd rather spend time with them, rather than be knackered all the time. It's tiring enough running around after them.

I love Wilton, and would go there more often if I could find people to go with. The niter starts at 9, and I bail out before it gets too late, so the next day's not a write-off. Music is awesome as well.

I can't understand the fascination with allniters anymore - I can't be bothered most of the time these days unless it's a weekender. I don't want to drive to one, I can never get a lift back and I'm far too long in the tooth to spend 5 hours on trains travelling home. Plus they go on far too long these days. What can people possibly talk about for 10 hours? And then there's people who start getting really grumpy or wierd about 4am or repeat stories they told me already at the beginning of the night and I can't stop thinking about my bed. PLus,as several people have mentioned already, you feel like crap for half the week afterwards

To be fair though I've never been any different, even when I as 16 it would get to 4am and I'd be nodding off. Maybe it's borderline narcolepsy or possibly a short attention span

haha I am 46 aswell and I guess I havnt got the enthusiasm I had in 1977 for dancing all night every weekend. I have many great memories from Wigan, the Ritz, Belle View and the other Manchester nighters in the seventies. But that was then. The scene will flourish if it is attracting younger newcomers. We were the newcomers in 1977. We were regulars for a few years and then stopped going, but a younger crowd was there to replace us.

While I might like to go to one again as a one off, its never going to be a regular thing. I'm happy playing the records now and then and enjoying the memories.

I like to get to at least two a year , you see soul music has been a massive part of my life for 40 yrs but my wife has been a bigger part of my life for 32+ yrs . I go to what I think are geat soul nights , she has no problem . I go to watch my beloved Forest at every home game and a few away , see has no problem . I would love to get to more nighters but it would be totally selfish of me . For me I think I have it pretty good.

Good thread actually here is my subjective view for what it is worth! After committing myself continually since 78 to nighters at 45 my enthusiasm is on the slide. This year I have done the Wilton 3 times and loved it,I prefer the short blast unless the nighter is exceptional, lifeline weekender last year fitted into that category but took me a week to get over cos I dont do it by halfs if you know what I mean.lol.

I think the scene itself will always be nighter driven and long may it continue, however the bigger picture of collecting records is not scene driven [for me]its quality driven and the next best thing on the northern scene very rarely does it for me these days, infact alot of the bigger records dont tickle my fancy anyway [a good example been the nurons]had the money to buy it,but thought about the amount of £5 to £20 records unplayed and untried that I could of got for money

Back to the original question,no way is the nighter scene stale the gigs mentioned Lifeline,Wilton, etc keep it fresh with the right mix etc and stick to some extent to the principles of the bigger djs breaking sounds and standing by them, this is a tried and tested formula on the northern scene and it works! I do also feel that the nighter scene is always close to dissapperaing up its own arse, the Parliaments track played then the frenzy to get this afterwards when their turned up again proving that not alot of people out their breaking tunes of their own just following suite imho.

I know alot of true people of soul dont gig much these days because of the baggage that goes with nighters ie the travel, gear, music tastes not to their likeing etc,we all have alot at our doorsteps now through the internet, cds, media, that does not help preserve a scene which traditionaly has thrived on the sounds been broke at the clubs and kept in the hearts and minds of punters who have nourished the scene and perpetuated the mytH that only certain records can be heard when you go to a nighter, not so sure about that now??

surely if you are such big soul fans you would want to dance to the music and see the reaction of a crowd to the latest spins?

You can do that just as well at a soul night as a nighter... I could be wrong but I don't think there's many people on here who never go out to listen to soul at some sort of event.

Can't think of any nighter with a music policy I'd want to listen to for ten hours.
