Pickle would spend the whole night Spining & manage 3 or 4 Perfect ones out of 10 Spins....Pete Wickam would dance allnight & suddenly amaze people with a perfect spin.....Gethro & Keb are 2 of the King's on the floor they can both do everthing & the only 2 I know who can spin in Both Directions.....Morris Nixon who runs Portabello Market in London & used to own the Motown Bar in Portabello Road, one week Sue & I where in there Good music being played as usual & Morris done the most perfect spin.....15 min later He done the same thing wobelled of course & knocked over a few of his Buisness Buddies...... Guest ShaneH Posted April 21, 2005 Share Posted April 21, 2005 what a lot of the so called good spinners fail to do is to spin at the right time. as we know a lot of northern is formulated with a very basic structure with many variations. To me there is only 2 or 3 opportunities in a song where you 'should' spin. Its the same with clapping. I have no extra admiration for those who will just spin for the sake of it. I see many dancers who will be constantly spinning at any stage in the song and it looks out of place. Paul from Sheffield who can be seen at the Wilton is the best dancer on the scene imo. He knows exactly when to spin and when to stop. he will finish a spin effortlessly and make it look so easy. He can also dance to mid-tempo 'double-time' which I very rarely see. The best dancer on the scene by far. You can forget the tricks guys who mess around the floor, for me Paul is the greatest. Carol from Manchester is also excellent and she knows exactly when to spin too. My advice to spinners is pick the right time and it looks so much more effective. This is somewhat of a generalisation, but I have noticed a decline in spinning and clapping over the past twenty years. Neither spinning nor clapping, or acrobatics make a good dancer. On looking round I saw this old bloke with a pornstar 'tache, spinning incredibly fast causing his sweat to fly off horizontally. Mmm nice. Found out later it was the legendary Booper. Great dancer but at the time, rumour had it that he may have been as old as 30 !!!! Whenever I try to spin nowadays it is usually in the dining room after consuming lots of alcohol and I usually end up in a snotty heap across the table. Agree with Shane a lot of people just seem to spin/ backdrop/ whatever randomly, great to see someone with a feel for the music who fits them in at the 'right' times... dancing rather than just being athletic. (I also sent some guy sparko in the Starlight room whilst hitting the beat dead on!) But what about the girls???? Sam from Coventry beats the men in plenty of competitions....but the two who are a real joy to watch are Kate and Janet from Hull. They just get lost in the music, every lightening fast movement has expression in it, from head to toe. Every swish of the hair and elegant gesture of the hand is perfectly timed and has meaning. Conway got into the Scooter scene after Wigan closed, but I see him quite regularly at Bristol City games. Another one from our neck of the woods was Dennis Lee. jonbuck Posted April 22, 2005 Author Share Posted April 22, 2005 (edited) I remember being @ the 100 Club in about 1988 Me & Pete Wickam & Ion we where all Tripping Big Time, There was 2 spinners there 1 a bloke I think it was Simon done a spin & wacked me in the face, Said sorry & I was so numb from Tripping didn' feel it....There was a girl & as she spun I think she had Nuts & Bolts in the botom of her skirt & she caught Pete & I with her bits....Simon done another spin @ the back of the 100 Club & got caught up with the curtain quite funny I am sure it took him a few min just to get out of them.... Guest Posted April 23, 2005 Share Posted April 23, 2005 Personally i try not to spin, sometimes i cant help myself, depends how pissed i am, i hate feeling dizzy lol, but at least i have an excuse if i fluff it But i heard from quite a lot of friends who used to go to wigan that Frank Booper was the king and he used to put drawing pins in the soles of his shoes so im told. That's because in the early casino day's it was squeak and another Bilston guy, whose name iI can't recall right now, that the Wolve's/Bilston guys rated the top spinners. I've got a pic from the first anniversary of the casino with both of them on it, only the top of squeak (Andy Peak?) head showing. Will find it out and post it.
