jonbuck Posted April 22, 2005 Share Posted April 22, 2005 (edited) Well he wasn't that bad really, we went to see him @ Wigan Casino 14th June 1975, there was a crowd standing next to us shouting out all the time " What About Blue Skies" & you have guessed it he didn't sing it. @ the end of his show, People rushed up on the stage, Straight past Jackie Wilson up to the Sax player as he stole the show, Other Shit performers @ Wigan was Billy Butler of Right Track fame after 15 min Everyone was sitting done on the floor slow hand clapping....Betty Wright was the Bollocks she tore the roof of the place....No doubt I will upset a few People with this but it is the TRUTH..... He was Brilliant,Yes.... but @ Wigan on that day he Just did not do it.... Not that I can compare it with other performance's that.... jonbuck Posted April 22, 2005 Author Share Posted April 22, 2005 (edited) In reflection it must be said that not long after this concert he went into a coma that he never recovered from....So as sad as it may be this probably was one of his last show's....But you noticed that after he died every male black performer was laying claim to have grown up on some street corner or other claiming to have been Jackie Wilson's best Buddie.... Have seen some "great" artists over the years but some when in the flesh so to speak just don't live up to their vinyl recordings. I'm currently reading the Jackie Wilson autobiography, it says inn there from those on tour with him that his concerts rarely change, the same 10 or 12 tracks all the time with maybe the odd change or addition here and there...maybe did the same for Wigan? There's a cd of his "Uptown & Upnorth" on Westside and it's class!!! As for the other two, personally think Otis isn't all he's cracked up to be and Sam Cooke a little too MOR in a fair bit of his outp[ut for my liking (cracking read his autobiography though). The diction and the inflection, too polished, too posh. Not saying he hasn't done great stuff Whispers for example but then something Am I The Man winds me up, and stuff like Here Comes the Night sounds really bad to my ears. I have spoken to several people who met him back stage and all said he wasn't well. Shortly after that he went into a coma and never recovered. Incidentally they played a benefit gig for him in Chicago (to help with hospital bills) and the main act was the Clash who did it for free. Apparently their appearance made the place sell out. Jackie Wilson was along with Sam Cooke and Otis Redding icons of Black America and in my opinion responsible for many more Kids takin up singing hoping to become the next J.W S.C O.R........................................ We should be thankful that at least we saw Jackie in the flesh willing to sing his heart & soul out to us kids here in the U.K even tho when he appeared at Wigan he was,nt well but still went on stage to try his best !!!!!!!!!!!! He was a very nice guy but I have to agree his shows lacked excitement however his records from the 50s until he dies were mostly top class IMO. There was nobody who could sing as many different styles as he could, even operatic. As for Otis Redding, I saw him at the Liverpool Empire a few months before he was killed. He was something else.
