Wigan Casino Saturday Nights 1979-1981

Thanks to Mark Freeman for encouraging me to dig out my Casino tapes and re-living my wonderful memories of the latter years of the Casino.

Although I use to go to the Oldies nighters and occasionally go in M's, it was the Saturday nights , main dance floor that always did it for me - oh if we could turn back time?

Russ, Richard, Soul Sam, Gary Rushbrooke, Pat Brady, Keith Minshull, Brian Rae and Dave Evison etc. - Respect to you all for such wonderful memories!

On some nights there was only a few hundred people in so am hoping that this is a great opportunity to re-live a moment in time.

A few examples are:

Neil Allen, Chris Plant, Tim Ashibende, Dave Thorley, Atlas, Geoff Oakes, Dave Shaw, Waggsy, Trusser, Harpo, The twins, Rob Marriott, Vernon, Martin Maylor, Blondie, Ricky Brown, Pete French, Fletch, Tracey, Pip and the rest of the Stroud contingent. The Gloucester crowd and so many more from Worcester, Redditch, Crewe, Manchester, Scotland etc.

Also the people that I didn't meet at the Casino but then met afterwards and found out they were also there, Guy, Keb, Butch, Gilly etc.

Also to the wonderful soulies that we no longer see around Dave Alcock, Pete Lawson, Tommo, Mudd and others R.I.P.

Anyway if you were there between 1979-1981 please leave a comment.

i was there and it was great to walk in and see everyone dancing, it was such a friendly atmosphere, and i was heavily into collecting records as i DJ locally and looking through lots of record boxes and everything was so much cheaper to buy then , pressings i picked up 10 for a Quid not like now 10 or 15 or 20 quid. originals were easier to get hold of also. but the main thing was the dancing , more people did acrobatic movements ,cart wheels,back drops,etc and seeing lots of women spinning at the front near those massive speakers.and if you got bored listening to the likes of Richard Searling playing lots of cover ups to protect records from been bootlegged, you could go up stairs and listen to classic oldies in MR ,ms. i have lots of fond memories of wigan and no where i have been has lived up to this place. bye for now. whiteflatcap.man

I first visited the Casino in 76.Used to go once or twice a year up untill late 79 when I started going most weeks.Between 76 & 79 I found the likes of St Ives,Yate,The Fleet etc more to my liking.So in my opinion 1980 untill the end were the best Wigan years during my time on the scene......The music stepped up a gear(Richards playlists probably the best ever anywhere),the thieving seemed to lessen,the barb craze seemed to have stopped,the crap played by Russ & Keith was overshadowed by quallity from Richard &Gary R & there wasn't the 'sinister' atmosphere (I think most who went will know what I mean) in the lobby & corridors of Mr Ms there had been previously.I used to drive up usually with Tony Worot,Gareth Harry,Bev Lucas & Andy West in my car (all from Bedford).We used to stop occasionaly in Stoke for a pint with the likes of Dave Alcock,Sally (Cheryl),Ellaine,Brenda Bell, etc etc on the way up.Happy days indeed.

I have really enjoyed this thread-specialy Toads refosoul clips (one or two I hadn't heard for years) & a lot of people mentioned who I knew in those days.Keep it up !

Suppose she was abot 19 at the time (78/79).She borowed my car one night to go & get 'something' ,was gone for hours & managed to break someones leg & get pulled by the OB,never did get the full story as everyone involved (including me) were .

We were rooted in the record bar, but when Richard was at his peak you got someone to look after your sales box and headed for the floor. The worst night I can remember was a Saturday after a "Wigan & Wheel" Oldies "Mid-month" all nighter on the Friday, it was F**king freezing inside, we kept our coats on ! about 200 in. No atmosphere at all. We got up there at 1.30 am in time for Richards spot and then drove home when he'd done !

Names from that time haunting the record bar.

Derek Pearson, Eddie Hubard, George Sharp, Rod Shard, Chris Shaw, Garry Churm, Gary Speddings, Neil Salter (Robins big bro) Rob Lythal (correct spelling?) Dave Withers, Hoppy, Tim Ashebende, a shy bloke called Mark Dobson, Keith Minshull, Gilly, Kev (Burton)

Also who was the guy that travelled from the Cotswolds/ Cheltenham every week to sell records . He had a huge record box, mainly UK stuff and used to hump it to the train station in the morning very well spoken, (Julian?) Long hair. He might have been at university as well

I cant for the life of me remember the nighter i went to in worcester/redditch, ive got memory loss must be my age!! lol, i spent alot of time down in redditch tho staying at Sharons with her sister, i can remember her dad was a prison officer as was my dad and we'd hide in her bedroom every morning so her dad wouldnt find us wide awake (know what i mean?)!! lol, those were great days. I was a regular at Wigan as i only lived an hour away thats where i met sharon and Wagsy and crew there was a guy called Simon from brum too, do you know him? Me and the Lancaster crowd used to sit on the left near the stage (when i was stationery)!!. I havent been to a nighter for years due to family comitments but im up for it now and have found a few freinds from the past on you tube and we are all organising to go to the May 09 nighter at Morecambe for a reunion, i honestly cant wait.

it,s not Alan Lane or Ian stewart I know them both from do's down there

I've got a feeling now his name was JERRY and the Cambridge thing might fit, I know it took him ages to get to the Casino on the train. He always used to sit immediately on the left of the record bar as you walked through the middle "doors" (exit) from the back of the dance floor.

His record box had about 6 sections across and was massive.

I have an old address book somewhere i'll try and find it.

79-81 was my main blooding into the NS scene.I travelled every Saturday from Edinburgh on the train with Stevie Smith and Dale Pender both no longer with us,RIP,and Jimmy Kaye and many others that were regular travellers at that time, those were the days of the persil tickets as I recall.I agree with many that for me the music at that time was superb and set me up for the likes of Stafford etc afterwards.Met loads of great people over that period from all over the country.

im sure ive read this before but cant seem to find it!! but i am totally overwhelmed that Dale is no longer with us he spent a few times at my house when we were together back in the 70s he was a lovely guy and i always remember the natural black streak in his blonde hair that i thought was so cool!! Such good memories of a great guy and friend. God bless him xx also Stevie too!! we used to chat on the train a few times, so sad to know theyve gone. RIP guys see ya up there xx

We traveled down from Edinburgh and surrounding areas from the mid 70's up until the final nights, met lots of great people and heard oh so many great sounds - I loved the record bar, talking to so many knowledgeable people and going up to M's - no mention of Gal who always played a great spot!

If it wasn't for the casino then the Clouds nighters in Edinburgh would never have happened - and I'm sure it's influence was felt in many other towns and cities the length and breadth of the nation.

hi g, my brother in law from edinburgh has polaroids of himself and others from the scottish crowd practacing "the splits" and other torturous shananigans from inside the all-nighter. have asked him to display them for others to see, but he is just not interested now.

to all the people who never made wigan, remember this: WE DIDN'T NEED TO GO. WE HAD OUR OWN ALL-NIGHTERS... AND BRILLIANT THEY WERE TOO!

Started going in summer 78 when the showstoppers did a gig,then went fortnightly till about april 81.went to the 500th and last night sept 81.spent the best part of my life at the casino.met some fine people at the allnighter.

I Was making regular trips to the USA in search of 45s and could be found selling my latest finds in the record bar alongside Tim Ashibende, Rod Shard, Dave Withers, Keith Minshull etc... Gary was one of my best customers at the time and most of my better new discoveries went his way.

Have not seen him since the mid 80s although l do hear of his whereabouts from time to time.

i was mates with Dave and his then girlfriend, now i believe wife.(great people)Haven't seen him since we bumped into each other at Stafford (i think) I really didn't getting to know alot of people at Wigan (didnt do gear (then) Just i danced most of the night away. Hi Nick--how,s sunny Skipton --yo doing the tide bar 27 th.? Steve Campbell was my best man in 1981(strait after a Wigan packed Friday Niter)--never forget Dave Evison announcing at 7.30 a.m --"Would Tony Coleby meet Steve Campbell in the record bar as you,re getting married 100 miles awaay in 7 hrs.!!! about 30 people at Wigan that nite were at the wedding in Northallerton that afternoon!! not many people ate their buffet---ENGLAND JUST GOT THEIR 5 TH,)

Hi Dave - Bernie wasn't wearing my best fred perry shirt, he kindly borrowed off me in 1978..... . It was my best shirt honest. Didnt make Guy 50th, although I was being badgered by Jolly, Pete Hickson and had a nice request off Robin Salter to attend.

Dave - read something yesterday from Pat Allen on SS - re Burnley and Pendle/Bank Hall Miners "get together", or that's how I viewed it. Hope your well, did I see you have recently joined EMS.

Hi Tony, Mr Campbell I always remember sitting in the record bar as a regular, with a bottle of spirit by his side. I use to think - brave man, cause at the time, I could not feel my tounge, let alone the roof of my fecking mouth.... .

Who's parents paid for the buffet........ was that your wedding to Rani - Tony, or has there been other's .

Been requested to attend a few Hide Bar do's, but as yet I have not attended any - and I doubt I will. But great to hear Steve is about.

How are the two of you filling the missing vacant space - on a sunday mornings - now .

Christ - York has some soul club history, was recently working in York and staying in digs at the Five Lion's Pub in the centre, couple of locals in there had quite a very educated northern, (now scooter only) background. .

Yea, Big Dave and Pete were there, I had no idea who Pete was when he came over for a chat. Not seen him since 1978.

I joined EMS in Jan or Feb this year.

The last time I saw Pat he was on about a reunion, but that was last summer!
