What a great playlist as detailed above....was a big Pat Brady follower as Pat was our local DJ.

It would be great if Mark Freeman could put up some of Pat's list from back then, as I seem to recall Mark having a better knowledge of who played what, from his C90 tape collection. :(

Here's a few off the top of me head.

The Chandlers - Your Love Makes Me Lonely (Col Soul)

Jimmy Burns - I Really Love You (Erica 2)

John Bowie - Youre Gonna Miss A Good Thing Baby (Merben)

J T Brown - Like Taking Candy (Mahogany)

Carol Anderson - Sad Girl (Fee)

Jimmy McFarland - Lonely Lover (RPR).......anyone available to post up a sound file of this - please.

Keep um coming chaps..... whistling.gif .

Thanks

Nick.

Robin - how's the memory ....still awaiting your knowledge and input on this thread, should be interesting. wink.gif

Hi Nick, Pat got the Chandlers off Andy Riding at the Spinning Jenny.

The Chandlers was a big sound for Andy at Accy Band Club back in 76.

Sadly Andy passed away a few years back.

john bowie and carol anderson came from richard.

pat had herb ward "strange change" as sam williams c/u.old mecca spin i believe.

j.t.brown came from arthur fenn i think.

The first person to play John Bowie at Wigan was Pep, mid 77

I started going in 1978 and I loved every minute of it and as you say with the play lists mentioned it certainly wasn't dead imo of course.

A little random Sharon, but.....

Ever seen/heard anything from/about Neil Mercer?......

Bumped into most of the old crowd over the years, but never Neil?....

It all got a bit confusing as you were hear different dee-jays playing the same track at a venue but with a different cover up name.

I did after many years get a copy of "Nightime Shadows" TSOB (I put TSOP earlier - mad moment) on 45.

For years I didn't know what it was and then Martin Maylor reckoned that Crumb from Stoke had bought it from Richard who had got it off Sam towards the end of Wigan.

After a crazy weekend we travelled miles to see Crumb and I was willing to offer a tidy sum for what was one of my top wants. Walked in spoke to Crumb, who said "haven't got a clue what you are talking about and never heard of the record.

The things you do to get that elusive track!

Speaking of members of the cloth what ever happened to TONY CLAYTON wasn`t he a vicar or summat?

Tony is still living in Nottingham and was well last time we talked. Nigel from Long Eaton keeps in contact with Tony may see him on Saturday night, I will ask if he is there,

I think Tony is still trying to refill his collection if you know what I mean!

Hi Pete, its shocked me that John Bowie didn,t get played at Wigan till 77.

Andy Riding had a good few for sale summer 75 £4 each i got mine off him than and so did Ginger and about a dozen other people in our local area.

Agree with you there Harry, I've found that most peeps that say the casino was shit after that date were the peeps that had stopped going anyway and started having kids etc so how they can comment is beyond me, there's a few couples from our way that always say that there a bit older than me and Kev but my answer is always the same if you wern't there how would you know.

I started going in 1978 and I loved every minute of it and as you say with the play lists mentioned it certainly wasn't dead imo of course.

sorry to have to say this but i did go in 78 79 a few times and was a reguler back in 74 every week and for me it most sertenly did go shit later on and that is one of many reasons i packed it in . but hey its only an opinion . if you wasant there at the begining er? how would you know the diference ?? ...............but my atitude is it dont make any diference when or where you went .if you enjoyed it thats all that maters no bugger can take your happy memorys away .for me there was no place like the old emp as we calld it in wigan

Of course it's very subjective in as much as whatever period 'we' went is always going to be 'the Best', but.....

Some of us may have not been there at 'The Beginning' but the Music from this period was a feature of the latter years which we all heard via the main room/M's/Friday oldies nights. however if you stopped going in say 78 because it "Was Shit" you would have missed the stuff that came after - ie 79 onwards - ie the playlists that everyone has posted about, ie The original thread Question (79-81)

The Music, The Jocks, the Punters were always going to change over an 8 year period - some of these changes were for the good - others less so, but to simply write off a 3-4 year period as "Shit" is a little sweeping in the extreme just because of a preferance for one year over another....

All of course IMHO..

did bridget live in crewe at one point ?

From memory Bridget did spend some time in Crewe as it was with Martin Maylor that I met her. Although this may have been that she stayed there occasionally.

A couple of other names from Crewe Ady and Bob. I think Ady became a Royal Guard.

Hi old boy how you doing, just remembered I need to do you a CD mate, although sure you will have hear them all.

He did say he was an old Northern boy, but I never believed him, well I never!

You being serious about him being an Elvis impersonator? I remember him coming to a Clouds allnighter and Bruce paid him at least partly in bottles of something strong (whisky?) and he proceed to work his way through it during the all-nighter, even worse he was djing towards the end. I didnt really know him as I was just a young lad but he seemed a real rum lad and always spoke, he always said Clouds Edinburgh was his favourite place. Good to hear he is still around.

Hi Jock

I hope all is well!

Who was the guest dee-jay at Wigan around 1980 from Scotland.

I know he brought a coach load down with him and I believe that possibly you were on it.

I used the word shit coz that's what peeps have said to me about the years that I went but as I said most of em had stopped going by this time, I'll still never forget the first time I walked through the doors the atmosphere was amazing and it was packed out.

Do agree with you about some of the above though had my membership nicked and it was actually taken buy one of the girls from Runcorn my home town but could never prove it. Now this was the period I went (77-80) so that makes us all a bunch of Scallys who just went to Wigan to rob a few bags, buy some of Russ's CC's and a few 'Do I Love You' Boots off Sousan, then get dragged home by our Mums for being very naughty Boys - and made to write out 100 times 'I will not dress up in comedy trousers and go to Wigan Casino'.... and of course before I went (pre-77) every single person was a 100% rare soul lover who only went to Wigan to buy each other Brews and compare record collections.....

Now of course I'm not saying you're refering to me personally in your above statement - but I think you can understand why I (and others) get a little pissed off when we keep being told how bad it was when we were there........ I'm sure if I said all the above about your time in 74 you would be just as pissed!..

As said previous - there seems to be this 'need' with certain people that whenever the 'W' word is mentioned they ALWAYS have to finish any comment with "Wigan Was Shit After ........." (insert year or reason of your choice) even though this wasn't the original question, why this is I dont know - but I just get a little fed up of people completely re-writing a great period for many of us.......

so you were one of the scallies who robbed one of my few stolen bags eh!!!! :D had so many stolen i stoped taking one and if i stunk in morning then tuff shit! i first went in 77 just at the end of the pop period.BUT i still have fond memories of PAUL NEWMAN,RAINBOW PEOPLE, ESKO AFFAIR(C/U AS LOU EDWARDS! YEAH RIGHT!) FAMILY AFFAIR(THE BIGGEST RECORD AT CASINO AT THE TIME) 20000 PEOPLE DANCING AND CLAPPING. MICHELLES,(DEE DEE BARNES) STEMMONS EXPRESS ETC. and then it was half past 2 and betty boo and for four years it was the FUCKING place to be. richard played some of the best records EVER played at the casino and single handedly stopped it from shutting. sometimes the floor was empty for the great records he was playing, but thats their loss. i was thewre and i wouldn't have changed it for the world.look at the play lists and honestly tell me, if all the records mentined wouldn't go down a storm today. i've heard cecil washington played to an empty floor, but circa 78 with the clapping in time it really was buzzing. if youb missed it then tough!

Just to pick up on the 'punk' thing, there was great deal of that kind of lad attended in the last couple pf years, about four 'punks' from Warrington used to travel up on the 11.15pm 604 bus regularly. A similar ethic attraction I think, always very amiable - and trolleyed.

I have to keep them distant from that horrible punk club and it's members, Trux was it?, near the train station, that we used to get legged off regularly.

yeah i get a little fed up when people completly twist what i say to make me sound like a tw,,tt , first of all this is the first time i have ever said it . second thing is i just didant think it was as good from a point of veiw that i went every week in the begining and then didant go much at all after 76 but if you take a look at what i wrote i did say i stil visited the place in 78 and later so i was in a position to make a comparison due to the previous persons posting about ................... these people who stoped going blah blah blah . i do not go around forcing my opinion on people of course people enjoyed atending the club dosant mater what year or any thing f.. me mate take it easy. it was only my own personel opinion on when i enjoyed the place the most . did i say every body who went after a serten date was all scallys no . i stand by what i said and thats if you wasant there like you wasant how the f...k would you know any diferent . now that dont make me any beter than you are dose it ?? did i emply that no .

so now if you hapen to make any comparisons regarding what you think of your time at the casino your a snob .i personly couldent give a monkeys what year or in fact if a person ever went to the casino .i dont judge them or think anything les of them . i would just like to make an inocent comparison without some body trying to make out this and that all because i just hapand to have been a reguler at the casino from the day it opend and gave my opinion . am i to apologise for it ?? regarding my time in 74 as you say whats all that about ??? i allready explained i also went up to the emp later on thats my whole point mate am sorry people keep teling you how bad it was compared to the early years thats not my fault same as its not my fault it turnd in to a feckin sircus mate but then you wouldent know the diference eh? lol couldent resist it mate

Only real problem I had was having a bag nicked by (sadly again) one of our locals - but like yourself could not prove it, however I think it could be said that our thefts could be 'related' - so to speak.

TBH I never saw (or heard) anything about parents turning up to 'reclaim' their kids, but it does beg the question - I wonder how we as parents would react 'today' with something similar I wonder?..

Thanks to Mark Freeman for encouraging me to dig out my Casino tapes and re-living my wonderful memories of the latter years of the Casino.

Although I use to go to the Oldies nighters and occasionally go in M's, it was the Saturday nights , main dance floor that always did it for me - oh if we could turn back time?

Russ, Richard, Soul Sam, Gary Rushbrooke, Pat Brady, Keith Minshull, Brian Rae and Dave Evison etc. - Respect to you all for such wonderful memories!

On some nights there was only a few hundred people in so am hoping that this is a great opportunity to re-live a moment in time.

A few examples are:

Neil Allen, Chris Plant, Tim Ashibende, Dave Thorley, Atlas, Geoff Oakes, Dave Shaw, Waggsy, Trusser, Harpo, The twins, Rob Marriott, Vernon, Martin Maylor, Blondie, Ricky Brown, Pete French, Fletch, Tracey, Pip and the rest of the Stroud contingent. The Gloucester crowd and so many more from Worcester, Redditch, Crewe, Manchester, Scotland etc.

Also the people that I didn't meet at the Casino but then met afterwards and found out they were also there, Guy, Keb, Butch, Gilly etc.

Also to the wonderful soulies that we no longer see around Dave Alcock, Pete Lawson, Tommo, Mudd and others R.I.P.

Anyway if you were there between 1979-1981 please leave a comment.

Mark (Gloucester) - Don't look at the picture as I looked quite different then, like more hair, and definitely less weight

Gosh i remember those days well, i went to wigan from 1978 - 1981, i too loved the main room altho i did pop in Mr Ms now and again but found the dancefloor too small for me.

I too remember Wagsy from Brum also Mandy and sharon from Redditch, Dave from tipton, Mandy from Wigan, Janice from Leigh, all the crew from Edinburgh and my hometown mob from Lancaster(dawn, Alison,Sarah, Marie, mark, Shauwn, Neil) I wonder what there all doing now?? we were only kids back in 1978, but what an era it was, nothing compares to The Northern Scene we were all one big happy family there wasnt any violence etc like there is today, i would do anything to go back to those days.

ah well there you go this just proves part of me point. as i also knew a handfull from wigan who was at it' and when you stop to think how many more from other places you get the pic. but realy that was only a small part of what i was on about am sorry it was taken the wrong way it would be silly to make out the club was only worth going at the begining or somthing am only to glad that people carried on going and that new people went and carried the place forward and mainly honist decent peeps like your selves but from our point of veiw the the first lot lets say ' we could see the changes and weather wrong or right i didant like the changes and the way it was going and i know i wasant the only one . as i mentiond before if you care to mention sertin clubs yer allways going to get people going on about the clubs hey day .at wigan i think a new genaration started to come and the old one started to come les and les the first ones was made up with people that also used to atendid the wheel and the torch but as time went on they started to drop off and a new generation started to take form .aniway am not going to go on about all our yesterdays and no doubt some bugger will take issue with anything i say but for me and many others it became a circus ah well who gives a monkeys aniway we all enjoyed it who cares when they went , i also didant take proper notice of what the thread was about
