soul snob is the term given to someone , who does not want to pay good money to go out to a venue and hear the same old same old, time and time again. Most people who local soul nights were this musical practise occurs only really go out for a social gathering, the MUSIC is secondary for them.A person who is labelled a soul snob, whilst loving the crac wants to also be at a venue where the dj's play imaginative sets. ME l just love me oldies

your right , they may be dinosaurs, but still have the snobbery of thinking new stuff in not northern.

To me a soul snob will look down their nose at a soul fan dancing to a popular well played easily available record , the problem is mr. dancer is enjoying himself whilst the snob has a face like he's / she's just "followed through" so to speak.

A "Soul Snob" IMHO are SOME of the OVO lot, ie those who have the attitude "If you can't afford it you CANT hear it!"...

The same people who would happily subscribe to a OV 'Hit Squad' of specialy sworn in stormtroopers going around the country in an open-top 4 seater Mercedes 'raiding' venues to check DJ's record boxes for boots, Carvers, pressings or 2nd issue's (1'st issue's are Ok if the night is free to get in)

Imagine being are your local Soul Nite when........

The music stops, the lights go on, and a guy in a long leather coat and jack boots grabs the microphone and announces.... "Good Evening, My name in SS Groupenfurher Schmitd ov ze OV Hit squad - ZIS IS A RAID. please place any and all recorded material on ze tables in front you for inspection by my officers, Escape is impossible - for you ze Soul nite is over" ..... at which point the doors burst open and in walk a couple of the above stormtroopers with two specially trained Sniffer dogs who can tell the difference between Vinyl, Acetate, Styrene and plastic......

The next days event report would read.......

Another great night at 'Local Soul', numbers were a little down this month, however two guest DJ's were arrested by the 'OVO hit squad' and their record boxes sent away for forensic examination - two further DJ's were shot while trying to escape through the toilet window, Next of kin have been informed.

people who think they own the scene by trying to dictate what is wrong and what is right - very often with an attitude of "you can't do that, but I can if I want and justify my actions but discredit yours".

is that snobs - or just pricks?

......just in case anyone is intereseted, that is what my signature is about; people telling others what they should and shouldnt do

I don't think you ought to be labelled a snob if you are concerned that standards are slipping.

I was chatting with a guy the other week about the Abstract Reality 45 on Sport. Obviously he knew the release # and what musicians were present on the session but he had a very vague idea of the matrix stamp and actually tried to get away with ZTSC 121610 when we all know it's ZTSC 126110!!!

I obviously cut him dead with a supercilious curl of my top lip and I don't think he'll try that one again.

He was getting laid though. What's it like?

Cracked up the other week when somebody mentioned on here that playing tracks from albums (from releases that were also released as 45's) was apparently considered 'bad form',

has it come to this? Surely if it's a kosher release in either format it's got to be spun out ain't it?

I mean seriously, get a grip.

Two rather extreme cases in point are Don Gardner ' we're gonna make it big' and Solid Solution ' think about it girl', both are rarer on a seven than a Womack encore in Brum' but should they not be played off the albums at all because their on albums?

Hilariously I also remember reading in a rather worryingly glossy ' brand leading fanzine' a couple of years ago a so called scene leader was now starting to feel reluctant to actually play his records out because he didn't want to run the risk of damaging them, whilst conversley digging about the rather worrying trend in venues that have more of a cd bias!!

Soul Snobs, their out there.

Is it me?

My experience is that the snobbery usually comes from a small number of the nostalgia squad - those who think you should only listen to a certain number of records that fits their definition of NS - usually from a portfolio of about 200 - 300 sounds. Those who think you should wear the uniform, or if you don't you just don't quite get it. The worst snobs IMHO are those who went to nighters for a handful of years in the 70s and then returned after a couple of decades to tell us how wrong we got it in their absence.

To ilustrate had an amusing chat along these lines with a couple of lads who went a handful of times to the Casino in the 70s. I was sat in a pub in Ilkeston catching up with one of my mates. They came in, one of them kitted up in the uniform as they were off to the Regency rooms, they were having a pop because I wasn't going and started going on about "your into that rare shit" you wouldn't know real northern if it bit you etc.

We had words

Part of the reason I keep my distance from the scene these days and only go out and play a few tunes now and again, can not and will not subscribe to the last paragraph of your spot on observations here, like Northern Soul painting by numbers often supplied and provided by people who should know better, very sad what it's turned into very sad indeed, if this makes me a snob then so be it but who cares I certainly don't.

Its difficult to tie down who is a snob. We all attend events because we like the Music policy or the DJs and also because we just want to go out and meet up with old mates in a more relaxing environment than the local 'Fun Pub'

A 'Northern' Soul Snob is probably justified in many ways as due to pressures from people who want to enforce their opinions on us we are subjected to New Soul, Crossover, Latin or whatever genre of soul they wish to call it. I like the new stuff etc but to label it Northern Soul is a little remiss. Don't preach to me about being a Dinasaur, as I said I like the new stuff but not at a Northern Soul do.

Whilst we have your attention. The language used by some of you punters is a little on the coarse side. English not your first language ??

Well here's an idea, why don't you go to events where they play your personal definition of Northern Soul and avoid those that play crossover, latin etc then you won't have to be subjected to it. Pretty much why i don't subject myself to nostalgia events (although I do love oldies but not the same ones, over and over and over again).

What's your definition of a soul snob

From the oxford online ...

snob

noun 1 a person who has an exaggerated respect for high social position or wealth and who looks down on those regarded as socially inferior. 2 a person who believes that their tastes in a particular area are superior to others: a wine snob.

Interesting discussion this one for a collecting scene and club scene that is essentially (and is revered by outsiders for being) elitist

Course - there are inverted snobs too - how do they fit into the picture?

Keep on keepin' on ...

To me a Soul Snob is anyone, regardless of their preferred genre or style, who looks down on other people for simply having a different taste in Soul.

Ive never understood that mentality. Overall I thinks its only a small number of folk who think like that.

Ive seen and heard people in my time sneering at DJs playing certain records that they dont like. These are often records they once loved, but they are now too "cool" to dance/listen to oldies or even admit liking oldies.

Dont get me wrong I dont like a night that is the same old, same old I like a night mixed up with lots of styles and genres, oldies, newies, 7TS, crossover the lot.

However, if I was at a night that I didnt enjoy. I wouldnt look down on the punters and DJs if they were enjoying themselves. I would simply think, live and let live and each to their own.

Don't subjet youself to Nostalgia.... The whole ethos of Northern Soul is Nostalgia. In the early seventies we were swamped with music of the Sixties. Nostalgia eh - its not what it used to be.

I use Kev Roberts term of the Nostalgia Scene that he put up here a year or so ago e.g. the part of the scene that in the main want to hear a limited number of the very popular tracks, IMO primarily wigan oldies. Although I love (some) oldies I can only take so much of that.

Having said that is the whole ethos of the secen about nostalgia? In the early 70s it was music from the 60s but did you know them all, if not how is that nostalgia? For me it's about the music, the people and importantly that buzz you get at hearing something new (to these ears). That's been my understanding of the Northern Soul scene, new - underplayed sounds mixed in with the odd quality oldie. Not looking back all the time.

But hey, we have our definitions and tyring not being a snob who am I to tell yours isn't right - fill yer boots.

Why don't you go to places that play YOUR definition of Northern Soul - oh you already do though don't you.

I do indeed. It wasn't me who was complaining about cross over, Latin etc and thought I'd demonstrated that I avoid the events that don't do it for me.

my definition of a soul snob would be someone who thinks they are an authority on what is 'soul' and what isn't. Like they have the exact parameters worked out by some scientific process. Often known to say things like 'that's not soul, that's disco, that's not soul that's r&b, that's not soul that's pop' etc.

The kind of people who would dislike a record for being by a white singer while happily listening to 'official 100% black artist' tunes all night, despite many of them having no discernable tune

The oldies crowd i would say are the opposite, they'd climb over a pile of great soulful records because they dont sound like Norhern to get to a copy of some nasty 70s instrumental by Biddu or someone :D

It may be for some people...... but if you hear a tune for the first time, how can it be nostalgic as it will have no memories attached to it? Lots of people on the scene are always striving to hear new stuff and not trying to relive the Wigan era. Just my observation.

I can see them now, climbing over that soulful pile to get to the real northern soul  ..

Can we have a sounfile for that Biddu :D ....

Who or what is a soul snob  , how long is piece of string...

Some would say its them forward looking folk trying to add a little colour to the soul canvas with a range of different sounds to mix with the established sounds..

Others would say its the Wally from Wigan who thinks crossover is in the Green Cross Code  ...

Like so many questions on this forum, there aint no real answer, its an individual thing.. Just get out there and do it, whatever that is you like doing... Long time dead...

So correct, i was at an All Nighter here in the North-East on Saturday night and had a discussion about Soul Snob's within the North -East area, and i think we are winning the race for the amount of Soul Snob's per square mile, There is so many people in the region with there nose so far up there own backside's. Quite a few didn't know how to use a set of deck's before i gave them the chance to dj at the old Phoenix Soul night's and some won't even go to a venue in the North East unless they are are dj'ing. But i have a great memory and they will never dj at any event that i promote or are involved with in the future.

Perhaps a soul-snob is someone who doesn't want to hear inauthentic or ineffectual records such as Duffy or Frank Popp at soul nights or enjoy watching people embarrassing themselves on TV in the name of a subject they feel strongly about?

Thats where all this soul snobs things started from recently wasn't it, after O' Grady-gate?
