Sadly missed, I sometimes feel he was taken for granted by us over this side of the pond. What I'm trying to say is that whereas some acts are only seen once or twice at weekenders, he was performing all year round in the UK, so people knew what to expect whereas with others there's that excitement as you never know what to expect. With Edwin you always knew you were in for a great show. I remember once in Aldershot he was accused of miming (due to backing tapes being used), so he turned off the tapes and sang acapella, excellent! Major Lance, J J Barnes, Edwin Starr and Jr Walker were all great I,ve watched all more than once. Barbara Lynn at the Gala Gran, and Dells at Trentham were both very good. The Ric-Tic revue at the Ritz was one more that comes to mine, but some of the best ones were not at a Northern do. Temps, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Mary J Blige, Four Tops, Maze, and lots, lots more. How can I forget all the acts at Prestatyn over the years some very good (and some not). Nearly forgot all the great Millie Jackson concrets in the 70s. What a voice and performance, will live with me for ever Best live act by far for me, recently Dean Parrish was good, still got a great voice, saw the Velvelettes on Anglesey about 1977/78, think the lead singer was about 16 lol and they were dire !!! Guest jobete Posted December 11, 2008 Share Posted December 11, 2008 I agree about Edwin the only bad preformance I've seen of him was in the 80's a mid week do in Bradford, he had lost his voice, ended up giving the mike to the audience and let them get on with it The Dells were brillant, don't think anyone has given Popcorn a mention, I thought he was outstanding at the Dolphin Centre Darlington, Major lance did a good one at Stafford Away from a northern do, then for me it has to be Irma Thomas. She has been truly exceptional every time I've seen her I'll always have fond memories of Jimmy James in the mid 70's singing, "It's Growing, "Chain of Love & "This Heart of Mine". Then Chuck Jackson at Yarmouth was great. All the acts at 100club including Betty Lavette, Terry Callier, Ray Pollard, Maxine Brown, Hoagy Lands, Dean Parrish. But two great ones were The Masqueraders at Prestatyn. Lou Pride at Prestatyn in the Modern Room. All great acts...love seeing live ones! I think everyone who saw them there is still in a state of awe! The Impressions @ Northampton - when Fred sang his solo on 'Gypsy Woman' I cried........just magical Bobby Hutton @ Cleethorpes Doris Troy @ the Ship Inn, Chatham - the bar was no bigger than my front room and it was HEAVING. Doris was on 'stage' along with a Hammond organ, saxophonist and guitar player. She was appearing in 'Mamma I want to sing' and one of the guys at the pub was her dresser. So we asked her to come and do a 'special' for World Aids Day and she agreed.........one of life's little turn ups for the book. I dj'd for the night and during 'rehersal' I played her 'Face Up to the Truth' - she said she hadn't sung that since she'd cut the record and proceeded to sing an accapella version. Sometimes you think you've won the Euromillions - twice Heatwave @ Chatham Central Hall - Always and Forever still has a special place in my sentimental heart O'Jays/ Freddie Jackson/Joanna Gardener/Luther Vandross/Fatback Band @ Hammersmith Odeon Skullsnaps/ Diplomats @ These Old Shoes, London.....this is stretching it a bit as they didn't sing but turned up with Ady the night before Cleethorpes. As an old timer I concur they were brill. A few folk weren't particularly pleased at this'non' northern group doing a spot but I don't think anyone can deny they did a seemingly faultless performance of black music rendition Funny that no one has mentioned the Major at the Torch -----possibly cos it goes without saying eh? Anyway possibly only a year or two after the Torch ,I went to a 'soup in a basket do' at Jollees in Stoke and saw the Three Degrees.
