I bet your soup had gone cold waiting for 'Contact' :P and the kitchen had closed and the MC had gone home before Sheila sang 'And In Return'..... :D

Exactly mate----it was a set of more familiar tunes for Joe Public  . Do ya know what though--i kinda miss those types of venues, a bit of comfort ,good view, meal and entertainment. Don't it sound so very '70's

tell ya what about that night at Jollees we went as a 4some 2 guys and 2 girls and the lad I was with was into northern but not quite as fanatically as some :) and he kept trying to impress the girls with 'Wait till she sings My Terms' its great you'll like it. didnt have the heart to tell him............................:lol:

Anyone remember the Circus Tavern in Essex  I think if someone started a proper dinner/dance in a really plush old skool venue serving Blue Nun and Scampi in a basket with a sparkly curtain at the back of the stage, a top house band, a tiptop resident dj (s) and a cracking MC it would work.....now when I win the Euromillions :P

Doris Troy @ the Ship Inn, Chatham - the bar was no bigger than my front room and it was HEAVING. Doris was on 'stage' along with a Hammond organ, saxophonist and guitar player. She was appearing in 'Mamma I want to sing' and one of the guys at the pub was her dresser. So we asked her to come and do a 'special' for World Aids Day and she agreed.........one of life's little turn ups for the book. I dj'd for the night and during 'rehersal' I played her 'Face Up to the Truth' - she said she hadn't sung that since she'd cut the record and proceeded to sing an accapella version. Sometimes you think you've won the Euromillions - twice

Never?!? I didn't know that. What an amazing experience that must've been. :) I had a dream last night that Maze played in my local, The Kestral.

Best live acts in a northern venue I've seen were:

Prince Phillip Mitchell - Fleetwood

Maxine Brown - Cleethorpes

Edwin Starr - various but the first time I saw him at the King Charles Hotel, Gillingham was special.

Yep - Doris Troy appeared at The Ship and the Stanley Ballroom :P Fooking 'ell....Maze at the the Kestral (for those of you who don't know the Medway Towns, this will roll past like tumbleweed....) now that would be as amazing as Martha Reeves at the Woodsman :) The King Charles was a tip (old NAAFI club) but it did have a certain squalid ambience - and I did dj at the Martha gig

Have been reminiscing with an old friend about some of the live acts we have seen over the years, Major Lance, Trammps, Chuck Jackson, Jnr Walker, Eddie Parker, Ric Tic Revue etc but one name always came to the fore, ladies and gentlemen I nominate the soul master himself Mr Edwin Starr, everytime he was fantastic... Any other nominations ?
Missed the Dells in 1997 I think it was cos I was in Corfu on holiday and oh how my mates remind me of the fact to this day, so it has to be Phil Perry in the Modern room at Prestatyn 2004 on the Saturday afternoon, what a performance, ballads, mid-tempo the lot. Great Soulfull performance from a real SOUL man, if you are looking in Rob Wigley, get him booked, there would be plenty of interest from the North East.

Surely you're too young to have gone there Dave? ...if that was the BIG venue, it's one I've always been glad I missed...

spot on jerry, bloody awful place like a great big wharehouse, but the MAJOR live at the TORCH recording his contempo album......this has to be there with the great performances of all time.....the atmosphere came straight from the national grid.....most of the rest of the country had no power that night ..:lol::lol:

I saw Junior Walker @ rock city notts early eighties also some great oldies nites @ the rock city hosted by ROB smith.hinckley does it for me though Gene Chandler and then the Ric-tic review will take some beating.

One of the best nites was in the late nineties at rainworth miners welfare in notts. when EDWIN STARR turned up unanouced he didnt perform but when he walked in the dance floor was heaving and it parted for him to walk up to the decks priceless.

Exciters at the Casino, remember the curtains twitching as they watched us dance, the only time I was ever invited to go backstage, they were more gobsmacked with us, than we were with them, so many questions, nice people. O'Jays at the Ritz all-Dayer. Parliament/Funkadelic at Belle Vue, I didn't like live acts at all- Nighters. The worst I saw was Billy Butler.

Although not a great fan of live acts at venues.................

Volumes/Magnetics at Prestatyn. Never thought I'd ever hear 'Lady in green' sung live in the UK, standing next to Tim Ashebend & Butch, the three of us nearly in tears.

Frank Dell at Cleethorpes, his booming voice still on it 30+ years later.

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes at Stafford. The dance moves, harmonies and the bonus of The Six Million Dollar Band backing them.

Edwin Starr everytime I saw him, the ultimate showman.

There's some spine shivering posts on here [  ' Jackie Wilson at the 100 Club ' ].    Can only imagine !

For any old timers on here, from the NW / Manc, anybody see Jnr Walker at the Hardrock in Stretford [ hazy , but I guessing 1970 ].

a] was he there   b] was he as brilliant as I have always remembered [ or is it distance / time / enhancement thing going on ].

If it is that, try and let me down easy, I've spent 40+ years now going on about it !

He was there because I was too! Bit later than 1970, would have put it at 1972. The Hard Rock definitely had a Torch allnighter there after it closed.

He was amazing from my memory of the night. I have a clear vision of him lying on his back playing as if that was the norm.

I think I saw him at the Hard Rock as a nighter after he had played earlier on at the Stoneground in Gorton but I'm not sure about that.

Jackie Wilson at the 100 Club 1975.

Alright lucky pants. You've no idea how jealous I am about that.

Probably three for me.

1) Originals at The Ritz. Really mind blowing and if you weren't there I found the live recordings on SPOTIFY of all places the other day, real shivers stuff. Crowd was insane too.

2) Phil Perry @ Prestatyn. Never knew he was the Montclairs man. Opened with a note perfect rendition of Hey You, my favourite record at the time. My head exploded and I just wept.

3) Morris Chestnut, same weekend. His own repertoire was short. Then he kicked into Ooh Baby Baby and I swear to god knocked Curtis' for six. Simply incredible. And if anyone has a sound file of that I'd love to hear it again.

Dean Parrish at Cleggy was a special moment too. During a crowd involved rendition of I'm On My Way there wasn't a dry eye in the house.
