The Attic - 3rd January

It would be fair to say when it comes to soul nights I'm pretty picky, I like what I like and there is little point in persuading me any different, and one of the venues I like is the the Attic in Mansfield. It had been a while since I had been up there so I was looking forward to getting back up to the one of my favourite haunts. They have some great guests on and the guys who run the place are passionate about what they do, something I can empathise with quite strongly.

This months guest player was Ted Massey. Now I hadn't seen Ted Massey behind the decks since the days of the Black Horse in Wolverhampton and was looking forward to what he had to play knowing damn well that he had some choice tunes back in those days .. question was did he still have them?

My question was well and truly answered with a set of over two hours that ticked all the boxes... and those that were there appeared to appreciate it greatly. Add to the mix some nice choices from the residents and the night turned out to be something special

Quite simply a tremendous night of music .. and a bloody good turn out to boot

Top Marks to the Attic boys .... yet again

Playlist please

A once very famous emperor or Rome coined the phrase ''Concertus Excretus '' this phrase applies to all that did not attend THE ATTIC last night , it simply means ''TOUGH SHIT'' .What happened last night , as I know all that attended will agree was one of those special nights that only happen once in a blue moon.

I know THE ATTIC lads have had doubts about attendancies over the last two monthes , but hey have'nt most promoters. Well lads after last night it may lays your minds to rest a bit , last nights attendance was without doubt the highest yet , and what did you get for your money , well to start with you got the usual warm welcome, and intros to people you have never met before . This fact makes the club more of a soul family gathering with happy smiley friends chatting (and chin stroking)all night , then if the fancy takes you a spin on the compact dance floor. Talking of dance floors that brings me round to last nights guest , a man that really needs no introduction ,Ted (Tedsoul) Massey . Like Mr Donnelly I too have not seen Ted behind the decks for many a year but to say he played a set of outstanding , superb , mind blowing choons would simply be an understatement , it was torture just when you thought your ears had heard the best record ever on came another to blast your eardrums into submission. I hate using that over used American expression but it really was AWESOME, thanks Mr Massey. Not to forget THE ATTIC lads as well Kev , Steve , Dean , Garry , you lads have found what most promoters strive for and very often fail to find , I 'm talking about a perfect blendand it's that , that makes the differance from a good event to a special event that people will remember and talk about for years to come , THANK YOU.

Well last night there were punters in from Sth Yorks namely Paul ,Sue , Yocky (who was very refined last ight , he kept his clouts on ),Mr Pinches , Mark Whiteley, his gorgeous lady, and friends whose names have failed me (it's an age thing) and the West Mids posse , Martin Bradley , John Weston etc etc along with Peterborough's very own Donnelly brothers , Mick and Paul. Don't supose there were any Man City fans there last night was there  . Any I'm off now to try and get my head round what happened yesterday.

PLAY LIST PLEASE TED (I suppose I can forgive you for playing records with ripped labels , it looked totally out of place in your box , but a FASICNATORS in my box would look very nice

I have three passions in life, my family, my music and my football team. Not many days I've had where all three come together to make the 'perfect day'

I read on SS two weeks ago that Ted Massey would be playing the Attic so decided to try and get across, went to enter "the attic" in my day Diary and in big bold letters on the same day was "WBA away FA CUP" bollocks.

I then discovered that Max Millward was "goooin" across to support Max and a little plan started to evolve, "I wonder?"

Email to Bro "are you doing the Attic Jan 3rd" a reply in the positive, right "Max have you got a spare seat to the on Attic Jan 3rd a reply in the positive. Email the brother "if you do deffo go can you bring me back?"----"nope we've invited Jill and Sue"

"SHIT SHIT SHIT"

Two days later Bro emails me " no reply from Jill and Sue so we have a space? "

"YES YES YES". Its "GO GO GO"

Up at 6pm to get rid of the previous nights hangover

FOOTBALL

Daughter and I get to the Coaches for 9am and we're in the Saddlers Club Walsall by 11am for a few beers etc, a great afternoon at the Albion where our little club showed the big boys how to do it on and off the pitch 1-1 and its onto Part Two

MUSIC

Max had arranged for his mate Sam Nicholls to pick me up after the match and take me over to Wolverhampton, a brew at Sams and off to Max Millwards, a smile and a soul shake from the great man was the perfect welcome. It must have been 30 odd years since I last seen BLUE MAX and that smile and sincerity was STILL there.

Off we went for the 80 min A38 drive and what a drive, a chance to interview one of the scenes true characters, stories about 2/- imports, the Cats, Yate and how he didn't like The Torch and after some help from his Sat Nav we arrived at 8pm

I know I'm waffling on a bit but remember it was THE PERFECT DAY.

The Welcome you get when you arrive at the Attic is unique imo, a genuine feeling that they are really pleased you've made the effort to come on down, so much so that one of the promoters wanted to pay for me to get in, how fookin cool is that?

Me and Max had a beer and fag, and went about settling in for a plethora of quality music.

The promoters always do the early sets giving the guest a 90mins set, btw Dean the Grover Mitchell on Decca, can you pm with the title, need one.

pisaphotos008.jpg

DEAN ON THE DECKS

Then the top man...anyone who was there will tell you it was awesome, even the exit sign was flashing in tune with every record, did anyone else so it , I was crying with laughter. Mr Massey you Sir were truly amazing.

pisaphotos009.jpg

THE DANCING EXIT SIGN

It was then we decided to have a dancing competition on the balcony (sounds good dun it) and eventually managed to pick 4 FINALIST, from left to right smudge smith, john weston and Max Millward the dancing exit sign refused to leave his spot on the wall in the main room, despite a

late back drop entry from smudge smith, Max won it with his unique style that resembled a Harrier Jump Jet taking off.

pisaphotos010.jpg

FAMILY

Said our goodbyes and off we head back to God Country. I'd told the Mrs I'd be home for 1-30 and at 1-40 the mobile rings, "just checking you're all ok" ---" be with you in 2 mins pet" after being out on my tod for 15 hours doing what I want to have your Mrs making sure "you're ok" was the end to a truly wonderful day.

Thanks everyone and don't forget say hello to the dancing exit sign next time you go which will be 7th Feb when the Mighty Kitch comes to town,

If I had a fiver for everytime Id promised to attend venues and not turned up, I would be a wealthy man!

However last night the promise came to reality after early planning and constant badgering from the'Yockster' we decided it was time to see what the attic was all about. When Yocky says he will drive and miss the chance of his much beloved alchoholic indulgences you get the feeling that this Attic gaf must be something special. Indeed Special it was! The kind of room that would provide an atmosphere be there ten or a hundred people in, a bit like your own home with your choice of the best music and the nicest company. We arrived around 8.45 and the room was bustling, people meeting and chatting, catching up with old friends, meeting new friends, thats what its all about.

Oh and then there's the music ! We just caught the tail end of Kevs spot with Dean following, promoters passionate about, and sticking with their convictions, some quality music, much new to these ears.

Nice to have a few words with Uncle Ted before he made his excuses and toddled (teddled?) off to open the hottest of hot boxes and claim his position behind the decks.

Descriptive text often carries much used, but often inacurate expletives, In the case of Ted's spot all the usual apply, but this time with total accuracy! A faultless mix of some wonderful rarites followed for the next two hours plus, so many tunes you just dont hear! Such was the quality that Ted reduced my chances of contracting smoking related deseases considerably, I daren't go for a ciggie break in case I missed something! :P

All in all a fantastic night with fantastic music, and as another much used phrase goes - we will be back!

Thanx to Kev, Dean and Steve for a super night, and to Uncle Ted for some super tunes!

Next time we come early and dine downstairs me thinks, smelt wonderful.

Best

M.

Well what can i say that has not already been said.Like Mick D i have not heard Ted play since......Allbrighton,he took the roof off that night, and its a bloody good job the roof was well fixed down last night. For over 2 hrs the large gathering on soul music lovers were pleasered!!!!

This was my first trip to the Attic,it wont be the last, all the guys are very passionate about their tunes and do know their onions.

In years to come we will be recalling great nights we have had on the scene and one thing is for sure Jan 3rd 2009 will be one of the tremendous memories.

To meet and be introduced to the legend that is "Blue Max" (did you appear in porn movies Max) was an honour.I do believe i won the dancing competion on the balcony aswell, yet another first.

To top the night off was the magic company of Paul,Lucy and Mick, nice also to see a few other Peterborough followers ie Gill,Becky and Sue.Yocky didnt need to drop his kecks there was entertainment a plenty(sorry didnt say hello Yocky you were always too busy jawing)

Ted you the man thankyou

Thankyou "Attic" boys

Thanks so much for all the kind coments i will try to put up a play list but over 2 hours its going to be difficult to remember this really is a great little venue. well done to the lads who keep it going

What a night!!!!.Loved it from start to finish, and for once wasn't worrying about numbers.

It was one of those nights when everything comes together, the music, the people, the drink. .

Massive thanks to all who attended, from far and wide.

Ted Massey - absolutley one of the best spots i've heard for long time. His first 90 minutes went that well,he stayed on to do an impromtu(nearly) 60 minutes more, much to the delight of us guys and the dancefloor.

As Paul D said earlier,it was a Perfect Day....A special nite at The Attic, and Forest winning at Manchester,,0-3.

A very happy Kev. :D

:D:lol::D .....Wow!

For me to say what a bloody great night will sound obvious and maybe patronising. I hold the view that the night is made good or great by those attending not by us four. This night certainly was made great, what a great crowd of appreciative happy souls. Thank you each and every one of you, those who attend month in month out, those who come along now and again, and those who came for the first time - the night belonged to you. There'll be a lot of lines written on this thread about Ted's spot, his spot was an event in itself, remarkable breadth and depth - whatever category it was always a top sound, one after the other. A playlist will be like a collectors wish list................ whereas mine, well we're not out to compete with the likes of our guests but to compliment them if possible on the night. Here's a sample from my 9.15 - 10.00 spot:

Grover Mitchell - I Gotta Keep Movin' (DECCA)

Ellie Greenwich - Aint That Peculiar (bell)

Stemmons Express - Woman, Love Theif (Wand)

7 Dwarves - Stop Girl (Ideal)

Jack Montgomery - Baby, Baby, Take A Chance On Me (Revue)

The Checkmates Ltd - Do The Walk - (Capitol)

TKO's with Hank Jacobs - The Charge (TEN STAR)

The Halos - Do I (CONGRESS)

Lou Roberts and the Marks - You Fooled Me (MGM)

Grover Mitchell - Take Your Time and Love Me (DECCA-this is a very different take from the Josie version)

Johnny Sails - Don't Turn Your Back On Me (MAR-V-LUS)

Lavell Hardy - What Kind of Woman (ROJAC) - We've played this at the Attic a few times over the last 2 years always gets a few comments.

Well - obviously not in the same league as Ted, but like to think there was something in there for most people, some well known "oldies", some less familiar.

Thanks to all came and for all your positive feedback on here so far. Most people there last night ( a bit of a who's who of northern soul collecting in the place) will know what it's like to put some effort into running a night and how important it is to feel it was all worth it.

Hope to see some of you again on Feb 7th for Kitch guesting.

Well I cant really add alot to whats been already said.

If you imagine a perfect night with all the necessary ingredients - quality music, a great crowd and atmosphere then last night was as close as you can get to that.

I was supposed to be doing the last spot but everything was running so smoothly I didnt want to disrupt things ( how could you try to follow that anyway?? ) and Ted kept it going like a dream right till the end 2hrs 15mins altogether ohmy.gif

Thanks to Ted and everyone who came for making a special night, as Dean said earlier its the people who come who make the night, we just provide a platform for it.

I'm just off to chuck all my records in the bin as well

Anyone for more of the same next month? There arent many people who could follow that but we have a man that can - Kitch, so hope to see ya then

CREDIT TO THE BOYS WHO PUT THIS NITER ON ,IT REALLY WAS THE BEST GIG I'VE ATTENDED IN YEARS, PLAYLISTS SPEAK VOLUMES, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK BOYS.

I can't remember any event I've attended over the past year or so (and I've been to a lot) that has garnered such a high proportion of brilliant reviews for its size. I could have quoted any of the posts, but these sum a wonderful night up for me.

It really was that good.

What happened last night , as I know all that attended will agree was one of those special nights that only happen once in a blue moon. ... a special event that people will remember and talk about for years to come

In years to come we will be recalling great nights we have had on the scene and one thing is for sure Jan 3rd 2009 will be one of the tremendous memories.

Ted you the man thankyou

Thankyou "Attic" boys

Its been a long time since i can honestly say that i enjoyed a soul night as much as last night. Brilliant spot from Ted.

Great atmosphere, super people and the music just blew me away. It's the first time i've seen Ted Massey do a spot and what a spot, best set i've heard for a long time.

Just got back on line after a computerless 10 days over the festive period and really glad I am able to comment about this night before the thread disappears on to Page 2

Would like to echo everything said by all so far, the atmosphere was superb and the music was excellent, not had the privilege of a Ted Massey spot before but what a fantastic mix of all tempo tunes.

What a way to start off the year and hope it continues for you guys throughout 2009, you deserve it. Any more nights like this and they may need more than one person behind the bar but I thought the lady serving coped really well with the larger than usual crowd.

See you all soon
