Weekender In Edinburgh Needs Co- Promoters

Recommended Posts

Ok I have the chance of a large venue in Edinburgh, the venue has three rooms and all off good size main room massive with big wooden dance floor.

I have spoke to the owners and happy about an allnighter.and willing to apply for the licence.

I am not able or willing/able to run on my own due to work and also been there before and would rather others shared the work that goes into it it would be ideal if there was 3/4people involved Djs from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen and guests.

Pm me if interested

Ok lots of positive thoughts, not much response on co promoters comming on board (lots of help offered) but I do not have the time on my own as I have said before.

Weekender Instead

Ok I was at the venue last week and have put these thoughts to them and they are happy.

There is hotels near the venue good public transport so another option is a weekender.

Room 1 - Scottish djs from all Soul Clubs plus top Guest Djs,

Room 2 -The Modern Room - I have asked an established soul night take charge.

Room 3 - As above!!

Friday Allnighter 3 Rooms. - Room 1 Northern/Rare Soul, Room 2 Modern Soul, Room 3 Funk/R&B ect. Plus record bar area at no charge to sellers.

Saturday Alldayer - at Main Venue or City Center Venue.

Saturday Allnighter - Room 1 Northern/Rare Soul, Room 2 Modern Soul , Room 3 Funk/R&B ect. Plus record bar area at no charge to sellers.

Sunday Alldayer-City Center Venue .

I have made contact about with the hotels and they are happy to set up reduced rates. But I would prefer others to come on board as I am away out of the country next week for 6 weeks so for 6 weeks this is sitting doing nothing.

The more involved less there is to do!!

I would be grateful for any input from anyone, who would consired attending from out of Scotland also.

clouds closed soon after wigan and everyone was devastated. i urge the younger crew to get behind this proposal and get the residents of edinburgh and beyond back up dancing. if they can organise an all-nighter in italy, surely we can do the same for edinburgh.

searling came to clouds and informed the crowd that the all-nighter would take over from wigan as britains no.1 venue... little did he know it was near the end for us also...

i am not saying we can be as big as that particular venue and time, it is just a shame that an edinburgh all-nighter has been absent for so long...

clouds top 10:

mike patto- cant stop talkin bout my baby

would b good 2 c a niter back in edinburgh

especially if there was djs playing something more diffrent

from the oldies nites

good luck

The clouds All -nighters(Edinburgh) were on par for atmosphere that any of the big All nighters offered a further south.

Also the Potobello All nighter (edinburgh) was also a great venue

Edinburgh is such a great city and small so i think a lot would travel up from England as well as Scotland.

Would need to be at least 2 rooms to keep everyone happy.

As you know there is still old fogies like myself who hanker for the sounds of our youth, but are slowly turning to the new modern sounds, but like you know there is a lot of activetity in Scotland and like the music if you have say twice a year rather than once a month it might work.

Dealing with the council is another matter maybe speak to Dicky who works in the council,he might be able to sway things.

Any dealing i,ve had with the council regarding licenses better to say your from anywhere apart from Edinburgh then the luicense is more easily approved

Good luck YGT

Edinburgh has doubled in size since the clouds era. half a million people (and growing) now live in edinburgh. this, and the fact that an all-dayer at the hibs ground and other northern events are already happening here gives one some hope that a good attendance would ensue.

re the last post; yes, i think we all hanker after our youth and why not? and to the other post i shall say this: soul sam told me that he "always played newies at wigan".(meaning that "newies" have always been with us). there would be room for "modern" and oldies, especially underplayed oldies i would hope. there certainly shouldn't be a problem musically.

it would be great to think this would take off. i already have a convert (friend) to northern who would attend. my brother in law and his brother who were regulars in the 70's, and "lost" friends who i would attempt to get in touch with...

i really hope something comes of this. and as already mentioned, edinburgh is a beautiful city, the all-nighter could obviously bring some people in on this...

I WOULD EVEN PUT PEOPLE UP FROM OUTSIDE THE CITY IN MY SMALL (BUT WELL FURNISHED) FLAT IF THAT WAS MORE EXPEDIANT FOR TRAVELLERS FROM AFAR.

[i would guess the council are a bit more liberal in granting licenses during the festival.

The downside of this is that all the venues are taken and i would the venue you have in mind would also be taken up during the festival

.Also would be a problem for accomodation as the half a million soon becomes a million or more.so your flat Ken soul would become very busy, but we could always have an all-nighter there.

Having an association with Burns this year might get a license approved quicker but in this case its Jimmy Burns not Rab

But all in all a once in a while All nighter in Edinburgh would be very welcome and hopefully more young people will get encouraged to listen and dance to this great music, rather than the dross they normally listen to.

There are still good dancers in there 40,s and 50,s so it shouldnt be off putting to the younger people.

I remember when i first went to wigan and there was guys in their 30,s and they were amazing.

They danced different(dave evison springs to mind) for a start a completely different feel to the young mob who wanted to do all the acrobatic stuff but had no rhymm or co-ordination .

Aye Remember to support the Aberdeen all nighter and all the various clubs going on.

I happen to know a lot of edinburgh councillors and m.s.p's, to my eternal shame! and i assure you i would be on the blower to them regarding a license for the all-nighter.

re the last post, you know what i would love to see: the underprivelleged kids of the slums which encompasse the city, getting them off the streets away from the anti-social behaviour, and into the all-nighter. clouds etc took us as kids off the streets from deprived areas...

maybe you can ask them to give me back my license for the grassmarket as well as the money they took for me,but thats a different topic and dont want to high jack this.

Yes definately an All nighter for Edinburgh, like you said it was to be the next Wigan until the police and councillers closed it down.

Agrreed that the Scottish djs are good enough to play a variety of sounds, but you would need Djs from England that goes without saying to bring their followers with them.

Soul in the community.we all went to the local youth club, dont know if they are any now a days.

Agree with you Melv, would be good to see an allnighter back in Edinburgh...A tuff one to run with all the other events on but with the right line up playing a good ballance of tunes, not just oldies!!

I agree with Melv too!! I had some of my best times on the scene North of The Border with lots of great people wanting to progress with the sounds getting played but still appreciating the class oldies. I don't attend many venues these days but a niter back in Edinburgh could be just the job for getting me and Mr Molloy back out and about again??

The youth club scene is dead. long ago, we used to dance in church halls, schools and anywhere we could. its a shame the kids have to listen to the garbage offered up nowadays. maybe an all-nighter in edinburgh would catch the attention of the younger crowd?...

with regards to "djs from england", well, many came up to play a spot over the years. chris king was particularly popular. as for "the followers with them", i remember a bus used to come up from newcastle. i remember them pulling up the carpet tiles in the "cafe", just off the main floor! this was to get a better dancing floor-the talc went down and away they went! the main floor was always packed, and i tended to do my dancing in the "cafe".

its not just me who has many great memories from my home all-nighter. johnny manship is always banging on about his beloved pier by the north sea!

as far as the councillors and m.s.p's are concerned... they are parasites and frauds. they make madoff, the american crook, look quite reasonable! they are only in those possitions for personal gain. come the socialist revolution, we shall deal with them appropriately, and also re-build the dance scene for everybody.

if everybody got serious about an all-nighter in edinburgh, well, you never know- it could happen.

The Entertainment Licence should not be a problem, venue are happy to apply for it. As for rooms there are 3 large rooms main one Northern. Music wise a good mixture of oldies and newer stuff but that would have to be agreed if others get involved. I also feel that 2/3 times a year would be enough as for other clubs there is no exuse for clashing, as dates of all clubs are on Soul Scotland Site.

It would be good to have a Dj from every city Edinburgh, Dundee, Glasgow, Aberdeen you only have to look at some of the playlist then guest from the Uk scene who are on top form at present playing up front tunes. Just like when I used to promote before and brought up Butch, Soul Sam, Ady Crosdale, Carl Fortnum, Gary Spencer, Bob Hindsley, Dave Thorley, Dean Anderson ect.

Totally agree with all positives that have been said....... we have a tremendous bunch of DJs up here who are on top of their game musically but not getting the bookings they deserve, this would be the ideal place to showcase them. It has been too long since Scotland had an all - nighter scene, the Aberdeen guys have with great tenacity set the ball rolling, and this can only get better (Looking forward to the next one in April).

We as a small nation had some of the best all-nighters in the country, ie Marryat Hall, Allanton, Glenrothes, Clouds to name but a few. :D As for clashing with other venues, communication is the key. I for one hope this comes off and that all the other soulies out there give support. thumbsup.gif

Got to agree with all things said but as for the djs you mention, then why do they not get in touch come on board then they they can showcase there tunes at the allnighter and have input on the running and music featured also that could be 4 djs taking down the costs (dj bill). There would not be that much involved we could split the tasks and everyone is happy.

Agree, not a lot of people will not remember this but the last oldies allnighter was in the Brunton Hall Musselburgh.I kid you not about 4 people turned up and they were the D'Js ,the night got cancelled at 1.00am!!!!!!!!!

We defo need a venue with an upfront music policy in the Edinburgh area. Allnighter would be good.

Im sure edinburgh could handle an allnighter couple times a year if all current clubs got involved, im sure the Aberdeen punters would attend, we attend various venues in edinburgh now. Hope to see all the Edinburgh faithfull at the Aberdeen allnighters April and September

A allnighter in Edinburgh 2 or 3 times a year would be a great idea, but youd need a fairly a strict door policy, seem to remember the one,s that Yogi put on used to attract some unwanted attention from outsiders, but i'm sure with the right people involved it would be a great night

Have you thought about Shaz & Jolly, They run some fantastic night's up there in Edinburgh and they do know how to run and organise large scale night's etc.

Jolly and Shaz are happy with what they have got.

Its not the running the event as I have as mentioned ran Allnighters on this scale in the past but I am about to start working in Libya and away for 6 weeks at a time and home for 3. So need some help as mentioned the best way would be other Djs that way takes down the Dj bill and leaves money for top guest djs.

Northernsoul in Scotland is well entrenched within the scenes history and of recent years I can not think of many allnighters where Scotts aren't present traveling further than most to enjoy Northernsoul.

I for one would love a decent event in Scotland so I could repay the support that has been given over the years, I do hope this doesn't sound patronizing, it is not meant to be.

My only provisos would be that the music was worth going for and not just a muddle of RnB "B" sides or the usual meat n potato middle of the road soul night CD collection. It must not also clash with Middleton.

I know at least four South Yorkshire Soulies who would love to come and support a good Scottish venue, it would me mega!

There was an allnighter in Aberdeen Beach Ballroom back end of 2008 there are two planned for 2009 in April and September the Beach Ballroom had about 450/500 attend last one, Kenny Burrell and Chris King are among the Dj's for April 2009 Allnighter would be great to see many punters from south of the border attending, fantastic sprung wooden floor excellent facilities and right on the sea front, excellent pre allnighter meeting place on offer as well 2 minutes from the venue

Could be a good time to put on more events for the Scottish folk as many will not be able to travel toooooo far with all the worry about cash in this dark times..

You just have to get all the bull-shit and politics out of the way now... Thats the hard bit.... There aint no younger crowd to just turn up and dance the night away...

Good luck to all promoters... A tough game anytime but even more so in 2009.... wink.gif

I DID ATTEND THE LAST WEEKENDER IN EDINBURGH.I ENJOYED VERY MUCH.

FRIDAY WAS BRILL,I WAS IN THE MODERN ROOM.NORTHERN ROOM I HEARD WAS GREAT UPFRONT TUNES.

SATURDAY DAYER WAS AMAZING MUSIC(soul sam & arthur fenn played the best double up spot ive ever heard)BUT NOT A LOT OF PUNTERS.

SATURDAY NIGHT WAS GOOD.

SUNDAY ALDAYER WAS OK BUT NOT A LOT OF PUNTERS.

I WELCOME THE IDEA OF A WEEKENDER,BUT THE PROBLEM WAS THE EDINBURGH PUNTERS WHICH WAS MOST OFF THE CROWD JUST WANTED TO GO TO THE FRI/SAT NIGHT EVENTS.

I GO TO MOST NIGHTS IN EDINBURGH,DUNDEE,GLASGOW,BONNYRIGG ETC.A HELL OF A LOT OF TRAVELING & MONEYS OVER THE YEARS.I RUN A NIGHT IN ABERDEEN & APART FROM A SELECTED FEW,IT IS A NIGHTMARE TRYING TO GET THE PUNTERS TO TRAVEL UP TO OUR ABERDEEN NIGHT.SO MUCH IN THE CENTRAL BELT,THEY DONT NEED TO TRAVEL FAR FOR A SOUL NIGHT(to many nights on).

ID RATHER SEE AN ALNIGHTER 1ST IN A GREAT VENUE WITH QUALITY DJS,THEN THINK ABOUT A WEEKENDER.TEST THE WATERS 1ST.

JUST MHO.

Understand your views I also ran the one you mention above, venue double booked and had to move things around.

Also if I may add was left well out of pocket.(unlike what people say big venues, big nights, top djs£££££'s)

If it was a Weekender would be looking at later in the year, lots of adds on here and radio shows.

Weekend passes would be the first sold and with the right line up then hope that a lot of our friends from over the border would make the journey.

But without anyone else comming on board neither Weekender or Allnighter is going to happen. I have even suggested monies go to charity, all clubs in the central belt get behind it and could do a nighter and a weekender every year.

If 4/5 people involved it would be so much easier, I used to do it on my own but when working away for 6 weeks at a time very hard.

Ok someone to book djs.

Keep in touch with the venue.

Flyers made passed out to people to give out.

Put adds on sites and radios shows.

One person taking bookings.

Book sounde systems.

All the above I could do when I am home for 3 weeks.

On the night get someone, Weekender deal with passes, Allnighter take tickets money on door.

Security.

Check djs change over.

Again if shared less to do, why don't you come on board?

Ok sorry i am going to be negative !

There would have to be a regular nighter scene in Scotland for a weekender to work !!

There would have to be a hard core support for travelling in Scotland around the uk of about 75 to 100.

There would have to be a lack of licensed soul nights throughout the year in Scotland, in fact, this weekend there are three events in Edinburgh (Friday,Sat and Sunday) one in Glasgow (sat) one in Dundee and one in Motherwell.

21 Doos and nighters in England on friday, 31 in England on saturday and at least two all dayers in England on the sunday

and the above is not unique.

I do not believe that i have attended a Northern function in Scotland with more than 200 punters attending in the last ten years other than the early Goodfoots in Glasgow, the doo after the Wigan Play again in Glasgow and Bumpin and Stompin in Edinburgh.

Everything has changed, Derek there is no single focus for the scene in scotland (maybe the Aberdeen Nighters will become that).

For that matter there is no singular focus for the scene in England either.

I suspect the promoters in Scotland do not want to get involved as they are too busy with there own nights and would rather concentrate on those.

Look at Blacktrackin,Bonnyrigg the Web and you will see the reality of the Scottish soul scene (No disrepect intended to any of these nights I n fact I have never managed to attend Blacktrackin) attendences fluctuate at every event.

So for the above reasons, a scottish soul weekender is a non starter for me in the forseable future.

Derek, to save yourself a lot of heartache, pain and cash let the idea go and get out and enjoy yourself... cause as the song says, its later than you think
