BARGIAN RECORD FINDS - WHAT WERE YOUR BEST?

Gene-R

Recommended Posts

Following on from my post on UK soul, where the topic of conversation turned to lucky finds in boot fairs and charity shops, it would be good to hear of some of your best and cheapest bargain finds, whether found during a rumage, or just heavily underpriced. Here's a few of mine from over the past 23 years:

FRANKIE & JOHNNY: I'll Hold You (Decca ISSUE) 25p

MARVIN GAYE: Stubborn Kind Of Fellow (Oriole) 20p

CHUCK WOOD: Seven Days Too Long (Big T) 50p

DANNY WHITE: Keep My Woman Home (US Atteru DEMO) 50p

IKE & TINA TURNER: Dust My Broom (US Tangerine) 50p

PAT WILLIAMS: Theme From Police Story (Capitol) 10p - which I sold on Ebay last year for £51!!!

LEONARD WHITING: That's What Mama Say (Pye Studios Acetate) 25p

Sadly, I don't have any of these any more, as I stupidly sold them over the years!!

Let's hear of your bargains....

PS: I apologise for the mis-spelling of "Bargain" in the title - couldn't amend it!

Two of my bargains(what I consider bargains) are from Car Boot sales.

Martha Reeves & The Vandellas - One Way Out - Gordy 20p

Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons - The Night - Mowest 30p

Also considering the prices Frank Wilson is going for on Tamla Motown recently, I paid £2 for mine in 1985 at Exmouth scooter run.

My Brother in law bought, Gino Washington - Like My Baby - Mala DJ for £2.50 at Feltham market, many years ago. At the time he thought it was GENO Washington! I tried to get it off him recently, but unfortunately he saw a copy on the net selling for £140!

Oh yea, one other while I think of it.

Sister Sledge - Love Don't You Go Through No Changes -Atlantic White Label test pressing for $5.99 off Ebay. Only to see it for auction on John Manships site for over £70 a week or two later.

And please no jokes about me still having paid too much!

Patrice Hollaway Love & Desire UK Capitol 25p(Later sold drunkenley for £20 for Beer Money!)

Barbara Mills UK Hickory Demo (I was given it) Sold on Ebay £250

Tiffanies Got to be a great song UK Chess Demo 35p Still got it( what's the value?)

April Stevens UK Demo £3 I bought one at Wigan in '74 and sold it for £8 and found another in 1991 at a car boot for £3 and sold it last year on Ebay for £134

The week after I found the April stevens I want to the same car boot and found an old bloke with a box just full of mint Oriole singles. As I excitedly flicked through it all I found was Sherry Hugo Montenegro and every other oriole release except for anything else interesting. The stall holder told me that about 5 minutes ago someone bought about 20 singles off him for 50 pence each!

Barbara Mcnair -You're gonna love my baby. British White demo Motown. 10p Market Fair in Weston Super Mare 1985

Ty Karim - Lighten Up Romark Off a record dealer at Stafford. Couldnt shift it for £20 so he reduced it to £15, I only had a tenner. Bingo!Everybody wanted the Larry Atkins version at the time.

But SO MANY missed. Box at Hinckley in about 81. All between £8-£10, Ascots another day, Frank Beverley - If thats what you wanted (One of the Sassy versions), Tony Galla on Swan and Anthony and the Aqua Lads - I remember.

I plumped for an 'acatate'/mock up, of Marvin Gaye - lonely lover.

One more, and hopefully I can get some feedback on this one.

I got a white demo of Gail Anderson - 'Be proud you're in Love' on Salvadore, for £30 off Pat Brady at a Bristol alldayer in the mid 80s.

Obviously there are lots of issues, but I have never seen another white demo since. Spoke to Pat about it a few times, he has made enquiries, and not unearthed another. Asked John Manship, got an email from his wife questioning it's existence. Chalky has asked about, and none of his contacts seem to have seen one. Spoke again to Pat at Prestatyn, and he is convinced it is the only one.

So the $64,000 question is, Do I have the only copy??

Oh and I have only ever sold one record, Art Freeman - Slipping around for £8, so I could go to first anniversary at Hinckley. Breaks my heart whenever I hear it now, so I wont be selling this one. Unless of course I was offered $64,000 ;-)

1995 - Christine Cooper - Parkway Demo with Bell Sound matrix stamp (guaranteed original) - Heartaches Away My Boy from a record dealer in Manchester (one who really should have known better).

He'd just had a small northern collection in and was desperately trying to price up the records when I arrived at his shop. I think he confused the record with the much cheaper SOS, Heart in Distress.

Brian

PS - He asked for £3!! Do you think I should have tried to knock him down a bit ?

Just remembered, while in the Navy I was in the states in '78 and in Woolworths in Jacksonville I got a load of albums at 3 for 2 dollars among them was the Detroit Sound with "Jumpin At the Go Go" plus a load of Impressions and O'Jays etc. Unfortunately I havn't any stories of warehouses full of white demos though!(Just whorehouses full of white trash!)

2 nice surprises that thanks to Soul Source, I now know what I have:

Dickie Wonder, - Nobody knows, father bought it off a punk rocker, and Lenis Guess. Both kept for 20 years in my 'crap' box. Both as I say, thanks to this site now sit proudly in my 'not so crap' box. Thought both were boots, only to be told otherwise.

Car Boots really worry me. When I go to the big allniter in the sky my two children (neither of whom I can get interested) will be left with thousands of bits of plastic that will need clearing out.

I can guess where they'll end up - and probably at 10p a piece. 'For a quick sale guv!' I can already hear.

I really MUST sell them before I go, but the problem is just knowing WHEN you're going to hear that last 'record' that calls you to the final dance-floor!

Your father bought it Mikey ? Bloody hell whats the story behind that then. When I

was young all my dad ever said to me about records was "not more records, havent you got enough?" swiftly followed by "turn that bloody noise down!" ha ha

Anyway cheap bargains ? most of mine weren't particularly bargains at the time

just the going rate with a few exceptions. But at today prices they look fairly good.

The Constellations 'I don't know about you' on Gemini. Cost £4 in 1994.

PS - The seller? The one and only Mr Joey Dunlop. Looking at Joe's latest list he doesn't seem to be making any 'mistakes' now - grrrr!!

Early last year on a rainy Sunday morning my mrs dragged me to the Sunday market/carboot sale on Salford precinct in Manchester, we came across a stall selling tools and a box on the table with some dirty singles in, they had no covers and were not in too good condition I bought the lot for a £1.00

They were,

Doris Troy I'll do anything. TOAST

The Triumphs, Walking The Duck. Verve Demo

Len Barry 123. Brunswick

The Showstoppers, Aint Nothin But A Houseparty. Beacon

Mitch Ryder, Breakout. New Voice

The Four Lads, Mocking Bird/I may hate myself in the morning. ?? OKEH

The Beatles, This Boy. Parlophone.

They cleaned up ok, but what do you want for a £1.00 :-)

I've posted a few on this thread as Pompeysoul but now I'm a member so I'll continue.

Back in about 74 I found a load of the Bob & Earl B&C(With My Little Girl Etc) albums on a market in Liverpool for 89p. Sold 1 per week at Wigan for about a fiver. Also When they started playing "The Night" I had seen a copy at my local shop in Ormskirk for 25p another fiver on Saturday night!

Paul,

There must be thousands of those albums knockin' about too, a record shop in London had about 40 of them for sale at 50p each in '88. I bought one at the time and still see them kickin' around up here in the charity shops of Scotland!!!!!!!

I've found loads of interesting stuff at Oxfam, car boots and the like. But i still have nightmares about standing next to a guy at a record fair who's rummaging through the 50p box. My eyes were out on stalks as he pulls out Roy Roberts 'For Your Love' (which at that time (mid-80s) was only known at Stafford as far as I can recall). He turns round to his mate and sells it to him there and then for £30! Also had a friend Andy who got a box full of about 100 Mar-v-Lus and One-der-Ful 45s for about £5. The bloke who sold it to him was an old Wiganite who couldn't believe that there was still anyone interested in Northern after the Casino closed. No doubt he had some Spencers bags and an old vest for sale too!

Found that Tommy Dodson - Cooperate (Main Sound) in the Record & Tape Shepherds Bush for 25p 5 years ago. Didn't think that much of it, chucked (sleeveless) it in a box where it sat for a few years until one went on ebay for over 500 bucks. After much frantic searching, retrieved said disc, lobbed it on the bay, and again, the trick was repeated with it going for over 500 US. Funnily enough I was in Tokyo a couple of weeks back, went into a record shop and what was on the wall? Tommy Dodson - Cooperate. Odd, my copy went to Japan...could have been these guys who bought it...it did look familiar...similar marks on the label...

It's taking it's time to sell...must have sold it to them 2 years back now...poor buggers. Couldn't help feeling slightly guilty, though reminded myself they did choose to pay that much.

Hi Joan. Steve still goes regularly. I was chatting to him up at Prestatyn. Still collecting and turning up some treasures allegedly ;-)

I also see his cousin a lot at Bristol City games. Will pass on that you were asking about him.

I'm sure Hippo will know him too. And as I dont get to many West Country do's anymore, he might see Steve before I do.

Got it off Dave Flynn in a trade. He said he had'nt seen another one
