Cellarful of Motown 4 should be coming out later this year - I spoke to Paul Nixon yesterday and he says it's in the schedules. If I hear anything, I'll let you know.

Secondly, there are hundreds if not thousands of unissued tracks.....it's an on-going project of finding the different cuts on each take and putting that data onto a data base. Let's say Version 3 of Marvin's 'Heard it through the grapevine' was the one issued on vinyl. There could be another 14 takes from that session just of that track - you get the picture? I had to choose from different takes of each track that I put on each Soul Satisfaction CD.....and again, Earl Van Dyke's 'All for you' - the version on UK Tamla Motown is a different take to the one issued on Soul simply because someone back in the 6Ts sent a tape to the UK of a different cut (probably in error) to be pressed!!! I've got over 30 reference CDs with unissued Motown on and since I got them back in 2001, there's probably that amount again of unissued stuff.

Typing in 'Isley Brothers I heard it through the grapevine' in Google search brought back this result from Wikipedia:

Shelved versions by The Miracles and The Isley Brothers

Norman Whitfield recorded "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" in early 1967 with Smokey Robinson & the Miracles as vocalists. During the 1960s, Motown met each Friday to determine which recordings to release as singles. The Quality Control staff voted as a democracy, with Motown chief Berry Gordy also holding veto power. Whitfield presented the Miracles' "Grapevine", which was not chosen. Whitfield had The Isley Brothers re-record the song; their version also failed.

Try typing in your searches to Google - it normally brings back plenty of references.

Thank you - it's always lovely to be appreciated :D I'm absolutely convinced that there are more 'killer' tracks just lurking on an unidentified tape somewhere....gathering dust in NY.....and I'll let you know when I find it  For me, Kim Weston's 'Gonna make it up to you baby' was as good as it gets when that was issued on the black and white KW collection....blew my mind  Jo

Jo - this will be of interest to you ( and hopefully others ) , regarding the above highlighted part of your reply .......

The UK release of " AFY " as you state , is a different version from the release on Soul in the US , and this is certainly the reason as to why that happened .........

The 1965 Ready Steady Go special " The Sounds Of Motown " , though not claimed to be as such , was aired to coincide with , and promote , the first major releases for the dedicated Tamla Motown labelin the UK , of which " All For You " ( TMG 506 , c/w " Too Many Fish In The Sea " ) was one of them .

Unlike the other artists on the special , EVD was not shown performing " AFY " - it was used only as backing at the opening of the special - which came from a 12" acetate recording specially pressed by Rediffusion ( see below : thanks to Paul McKeever for the photograph ) taken from a tape supplied by EMI for Rediffusion in order for them to broadcast the special .

The tape supplied to Rediffusion was a copy of the master tape that EMI used to manufacture the record ( which was supplied to them by Motown ) , and pressed the record , unbeknowing that it was an " alternate " version , and not the US release .........

Hi Jo

I find that the US demo of Marvin's 'Too Busy Thinking 'Bout My Baby' is different from the US issue. The production seems higher in the mix and the plucked strings seem to be more prominant-especially at the end of the song. Must happen with lots of songs and takes.

Can't go back to the issue now.

Some great info there.

Didn't The Miracles also come out on a Music for Pleasure LP?

I have heard the stories of TOHOM being intended for the 4 Tops, but they were on tour, and the Isleys got it.

Is it possible they may have recorded it and it is buried somewhere?

Probably just wishful thinking, but surely that would have been Motown's finest moment?

Kev

I know what you mean Kev. Some of the 'alternate' takes on the session tapes sometimes had the 'edge' on the issued version....but that's because some of them had more 'twiddly' bits in them which we all appreciate  Jo x
