Haven't got a clue how to paste an extract from a pdf file into this system so just to say that a small article appeared in the Scottish Sun yesterday which reads:

"One of only two playable copies of Motown producer Frank Wilson's record Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) could fetch £75,000 when auctioned in April by Fife DJ Kenny Burrell, 55"

Mmmmm - perhaps the writer has been on this site and has cherry picked some of the theories.....

To Snook

Back in the 70's it was either Soul Sam or Brian Rae who played it at St Ives. Soul Sam is mentioned in this thread as having had an acetate but I know for certain that Brian played it on the recognised black In bootleg before it was available to the punters 'cos I had a butchers at the time.

Apart from saying "I just know", how the fook would any one ever tell if it was a fake or not?

I bet with today's technology it would be easier to forge a copy and flog it, how would any one really know?

I am at present making my own copy using an old ashtray and my scanner, it looks fookin mega.

How many people scoffed at the price of 15 grand 10 years ago, if it is Kennys and it fetches 75 grand that aint a bad investment for an over played oldie i say

Right, I'm confused now can someone just answer me these simple questions?

1. Is the copy to be auctioned Kenny Burrells?

2. If the copy to be auctioned is not Kenny Burrells, who's ist it?

3. If the copy to be auctioned is not Kenny Burrells is this a "THIRD" copy ?

What a great thread this is, absolutely brilliant. The whole saga would make a great documentary.

The copy being offered for auction is Kenny Burrells.

Only the 2 copies still known to exist

No third copy.

Tim Brown HAS recently been offered $50,000 for his copy and turned it down at this stage.

Partly my fault Mulf. whistling.gif

I was misinformed at an early stage in the proceedings in order to protect the identity of the seller until some final delicate insurance negotiations had taken place. Plus I have a big mouth which suited everyone's purposes perfectly LOL... :shades:

You are of course completely correct Paul.

But somehow I don't think my beat up copy of Shag's "Loop Di Love" on UK Records 07 would get the pulses racing somehow........ whistling.gif

Hi Paul,

Despite what JM or others may imply. Tim Browns copy is far from Knackered to say the least. The label has some staining and the vinyl has a slight warp, with some surface marks.

If you were going to grade it, I'd say a US 'VG' or a UK 'E-'

Overall, a more than acceptable copy given its rarity.

The vinyl is better on Kenny's copy, but I would say that the labels on Tim's are cleaner in that they bare only writing made at the time time of press. Kenny's on the other hand has been personalized. Some collectors would argue that its makes Tim's copy a more desirable piece as it remains untarnished and virgin. It was also the 1st copy to be found.

When it comes down to it, I don't see there being a great disparity in value between the two.

Just my opinion.

ATB

Andy

Thanks Andy,

I still think people are crazy.

I'm glad I can't afford to be so crazy. My Catholic upbringing doesn't allow me to be rich or extravagant.

Still, at least I have my guilt to comfort me. It's better than nothing, I suppose.

I asked who gave you the 10p, and you said they all did.

ONLY MY OPINNION, BUT RUSS OR HIS LADY NEVER ROCKED MY BOAT.WHEN A YOUNG SPROGG WHEN EVER REQUESTED FOR A SOUND AT THE CASINO, I ALWAYS GOT THAT ANSWER FROM EITHER LIKE I'LL SEE WHAT I CAN DO, BUT IT SEEMED TO ME THAT THEY THOUGHT I KNEW F-K OH ABOUT THE MUSIC, IN HONESTY I PROBABLY KNEW MORE THEN THAN I DO NOW. THIS AT A TIME THAT A LOT OF MY ELDERS LIKE NOGGER + EVO JUST TO NAME TWO EMBRACED THE YOUNGER ONES ON THE SCENE, YOU WHERE NEVER AFFRAID TO ASK YOUR ELDERS ABOUT NEW SOUNDS YOU LIKED ,ABOUT WHO THEY WHERE BY, WETHER THEY WHERE A COVER , WHAT LABEL, WETHER IT WAS A SOUND BEFORE OUR TIME, ALL REPLIED TO WITHOUT ANY BIG TIME CHARLIE ANSWERS. TO ME THE IMPRESSION RUSS + I THINK MARY REMIND ME OF THE ATTITUDE OF WHAT SEEMS LIKE IS MORE PROMIENENT ON TODAY'S SCENE. PEOPLE WITH LOADS OF BRASS TO BUY MEGGA RARE SOUNDS ! NOT FOR FOR THE LOVE OF THE RECORD ! BUT JUST TO SAY I'VE GOT A COPY OF IT, TO ME THAT'S BOLLOCKS, IF I BUY A SOUND , I BUY THE RECORD FOR THE EMOTIONS IT STIRS INSIDE OF ME. IT'S THIS ONE -UP BOLLOCKS OF EVERY OTHER c*** THAT GET'S ON MY TITS. EMBRACE THE YOUNG'ENS CAUSE THEY ARE THE FUTURE, A LITTLE TOGETHERNESS , THAT'S ALL IT NEEDS, JUST A LITTLE UNDERSTANDIND AND I KNOW WE'LL SUCCEED

couldn't agree with you more

Lost the thread slightly now.. so were are we up to.. is it Kennys copy has that been confirmed now? Makes sense as it was his that was scanned for the auction... why wouldnt the seller scan his own otherwise? of course it could still be Tims even if he still has it at home.. surely thats where it would stay until the auction was over and you got your fat cheque?

Has Kenny ever tryed having the signiture removed by the way.. its obviously detrimental to the value so worth doing..

Whens the auction starting.. Ive joined J.M site and paid my 50p to view the auction site... want my monies worth!

Kenny is one of the Dj's at the Granite City Soul Club allnighter AT THE ABERDEEN BEACH BALLROOM 4th April 2009, auction fiishes 8th April, will it be Kennys last play of FW??

Maybe this could quash the rumours as even I have been seemingly misinformation;

The following is an e-mail sent to Paul at Goldmine who reported that the copy for auction was Kenny Burrell's. I disagreed but please read the reply

Hi Steve,

I actually just checked with John on my article, and this copy is the Kenny Burrell copy and not the third one to which you refer. But thanks for alerting me to the possible inaccuracies. I do very much appreciate it. It was good to go back and check with John to make sure I had everything right.

Hi Peter,

I read with interest your take on the Frank Wilson auction. John Manship is a friend of mine who I have known and respected for many years. I also write for a couple of soul music publications here in the UK. John will not reveal the sellers identity for various reasons but I'm assured that the copy up for auction is NOT Kenny Burrells who is also a friend. The two known copies here in the UK are indeed owned by Kenny (very playable condition but with writing on the label) and Tim Brown (the warped one which doesn't play well). In John's words "this is the third copy which is the only one not to have come from Motown's archives" which indicates that at least one escaped into the public. I would also be more conservative on the pricing. In guides it is valued at circa £15000 simply because that is what Kenny was prepared to pay. I think £10000 is a fair price but obviously interest has grown since Kenny bought his copy and that may spur other buyers on. In the current climate though, there are many things to be taken into consideration. I have spoken to a good friend of Berry Gordy's who informs me that he has a copy of every record pressed at the Motown plant. I'm unable to confirm this but it could be a possibilty. If that is the case then there are four copies known. The whole thing is a can of worms but I think your article could be far from the truth. It is just a warning in the fickle world of northern soul and record buying.

Best regards

Steve Handbury
