Your Fave 60's Pop Record

Recommended Posts

This thread may have run before, but what's your single favourite pop record from the 60's?

I know, it's hard to narrow down to one (or two!) but makes for better reading than endless lists (IMHO)

Here's your starter from the Day household....

Alone Again Or - Love

My fave. Bloody beautiful melody, stunning arrangement, a perfect record from first note to the last.

right off the top of my head I'll pick:

The Beau Brummels- Don't talk to strangers (UK Pye Int or US Autumn)

in five minutes time I'd have picked a different one...

oh... runner up

The Escorts- Come on home baby (UK or US Fontana)

better stop now before I get carried away....

Difficult so many Tracks to choose from but I think (well today anyway)

Dusty Springfield - I only wanna be with you, 1963

Not like I'm self appointed judge of this thread, but every one mentioned so far reflects immaculate good taste (IMHO)

If you fancy a UK Atlantic issue (of Esther) Andy, let me know.

Cheers Ian - got one. Not allowed to play it out though, tried once at valatone and Johnny told me to 'stop bloody depressing everyone". pah!

In Town Mikey is runner up so far. Good call!

Honeycombs - Have I the right

somebody told me the singer is  Denis O'Dell i.e. Denis Dell of Better Use Your Head Fame.

(Pete S. to confirm?)

link

Sure is Simon! Dennis D'ell (or Dennis Dalziel) was indeed the lead singer with the Honeycombs, and is the same person known for "Better Use Your Head" on CBS.

No your dead right Simon. He's also the landlord of the Queen Vic in Gt Dunmow. So I rang him and asked him if he had fifty copies of better use your head in the loft ... he didn't blush.gif

Also told, they also had a girl on the drums called Honey who they got (part) of their name from!

Honey lantree (and she was)

Did they tell you anything else that you'd like me to look up on Google so I can appear moderately intelligent?

I've always been under the impression it was Honey the drummer who sang on Have I The Right.

As for a favourite 60s pop record, that is almost as hard as picking your favourite soul record, entirely depends on your mood.

I'll go for Roy Orbison's Crying, majestic piece of pop music, but may change my mind in the next half hour.

Dave...you never cease to amaze me. Your taste is impeccable, probably because it coincides with mine. I never knew you were a Pet Sounds fan. This is one of the most stunning pieces of music ever made, surpassed only perhaps by another track from that album, "God Only Knows".

Yes you are quite right, it was taken from some Bach tune and it really is a heartbreaking story or mushy lyrics depending on you're taste blush.gif

Nearly right Ken, Reflections is the B side to Hold On which was written by the band, it was then covered by Sharon Tandy on Atlantic with Fleur de Lys on backing track with an unconfirmed Jimmy Page on the geetar solo, but Ruperts People are a different band, top mod sound!

As i've said Ken, she covered it after Ruperts People and is by far the better version by her, i've had both versions in my collection since dem old days and when i've listened to her singing I can't help thinking why she just dissapeared, I know she had a pop hit with Tony And Tandy~Two Can Make It Together...then she vanished, would loved to have heard her sing that live ohmy.gif

The One in The Middle by Manfred Mann. Or pretty much any early Manfred Mann blues/jazz influenced stuff.

Elvis Presley ~  Suspicious Minds  ~ RCA Victor 9764

"We're caught in a trap...."

What an opening line... sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics.....

Certainly does.

It rhymes perfectly with 'a load of old of crap'.

I met this guy about 5 years ago, when I used to go pick the post up from the p.o. box in Hastings...anyway he saw I was picking up records and we got chatting, he says he's a member of the band Ruperts People, so I said what, this new incarnation, and he says no, the original band. Anyway I got his name and number, went home and looked them up, no way was he in the original band. Then he came round my house and gave me a poster for Ruperts People playing live in Israel in 1968! Said I could have it. I said which one are you, and he points at one member who looks nothing like him. Anyway I gave him a lovely US Bell issue of Reflections for it, stuck it on Ebay, got £80.

I still don't know if he really was in the band or not but if not, how did he get the poster??
