Hey WOH types, gearing up for another Walls Of Heartache next week? Last month was excellent and I'm bringing a few new faces along this time.

Dance floor was a bit packed though - any chance of redesigning the interior of the cavern so that I can throw a few more spins and backdrops this month? And how about the odd Mod tune - or is that sacrilege?

Keep the face, lose the hair

Eddie

Will be great to see you as usual and please bring a few new faces down - more the merrier.

Not sure I have a 'mod' section in either of my boxes but as dave and I met some very friendly scooterists at Soul Roulette last night I will, endeavour to find a tune or two for oyu.

I have just picked up a copy of Lou Lawton's 'Nik Nak Paddy Wack' which might fit the bill so park your 'chair' outside and we'll do our best to please.

We'll be announcing our guest DJ early next week but you know the drill - great music and 60s soul film footage.

...forgot to say that if it looks as busy as last month next Saturday we may take out a couple of tables to help you dancers out there with more floor space.

Eddie - as Andy says thanks for the new faces and we are making a few changes to try and generate more space on the dancefloor.

As you know we do have a policy of playing requests if we have them, but I dont have any mod tunes in my WoH record box.

Thanks for the support though and see you next week.

Starting this Saturday 28th, we will be giving out free laminated membership cards (quite nice they are too) to all our regulars - and anyone else who asks.

The idea is to allow 'members' some special offers, prizes, reduced admission in the future etc as well as making it easier for us to manage the door once the pubs are shut in Walthamstow and some people are wandering the streets looking for a late drink.

There will be a note at the venue explaining it all - see you on Saturday with a bundle of cards. We have gold, green and pink (for the ladies?)

Andy

Ooh - like the idea of my own free laminated Walls Of Heartache membership card very much, but am rather shocked by your old-fashioned notion that the pink cards will be for the ladies only.

Serioulsy though, I think it's a good idea. Much easier to keep the undesirable late drinkers out if you can tell them it's members only after 11pm.

Top scheme boys - oh, and will you be screening the England match this Saturday live from the USA?

I'll walk there barefoot and bring a seething mass of people (pressganged or otherwise) if you'll sell me your copy of Chapter 5.

Go on!

£500?

Guest andys165

When I said in an earlier post that the pink membership cards will be for the ladies, I was of course talking about the original issue, early 70s, take on colour and sexual stereotypes and not the re-release view on these matters, which doesn't care what colour your membership card is.

Just wanted to make that clear.

No football being screened at our night, no! We have 60s music footage of mainly, US soul acts for your pleasure instead on the big screens.

Sorry to disappoint you Andy, but the copy I played was (horrorof horrors) a reissue on GoldmineSevens GS009.

If you are are still interested I would be happy to discuss a swap deal.

By the way - enjoyed Soul Roulette the other night (but left before the end)

Cheers Dave.

Got one of those.

Been trying unsuccesfully for ages to get someone to sell me a real one so jumping on anyone who ever lists it. Top tune

(You left at just the right time, I think I was about to hit the decks)

Have a good one on Saturday

Dave - I'm deeply, deeply shocked to hear you are playing reissues as part of your set.

If you aren't coined enough to spend £500 on a british mod cut, then you really shouldn't be DJing. What's the point of living in Walthamstow if you're not a zillionaire playboy?

Can we have an assurance that your copy of 'Take A Letter Maria' is kosher and that your Judy Street is on Stryder?

Dave, I'd worry less about the reissue and more, much, much more about the Kiki Dee record in your set!

Gon on, tell us that was a request.

Kik Dee actually recorded a few creditable soul tracks including a good version of Why Don't I Run Away From You, and her Motown Lp was recorded in Detriot at Hitsville Studios.

No doubt Tim.

And Tony Blackburn appeared at Wigan Casino...

Does that mean you'd play Magic Carpet Ride?

Personally no, as it's not a 45 I particularly like and it's doesn't really fit into my Soul/R&B set I DJ. I would play some of her other 45's though I love Brit Productions, if you listen to either volumes of my Britsoul CD's they show there is more to British Soul than the obvious NS tracks such as Chapter Five!!

ANNOUNCEMENT!

How remiss of me not to let everyone know that Time The Mod is in fact our guest DJ this Saturday at Walls of Heartache.

Tim welcome to the E17 fold and we will do all we can to make your eveing a pleasant one - looking forward to seeing you on Saturday.

Now enough Kiki Dee chatter - let's talk Kenny Lynch. Anyone got a copy of 'Movin' Away' they don't need?

Eddie - you little tinker - as you know our night is about the music and not the label and I'm afraid having lived in Walthamstow over 15 years the 'gentrification' of the area seems to have passed me by (although I do like the odd Cappachino in the Grove Cafe).

My copy of 'Take a Letter Maria' does in fact appear to be completely kosher, which will be a relief to you as I know its a personal favorite - you'll have to ask the wife about Judy Street - it's hers.

See you Saturday - and no more clamering for Grooving with Mr. Bloe

Andy, you know its no fun unless youre flying by the seat of your pants - I thought I'd give this classic a play and see what happened - suprisingly enough it wasnt greeted by a mass rush to the dancefloor!

Kiki has now flown back to the box - but don't worry I will have something else lined up fpr Saturday - perhaps Earl Harrison's Humphrey Stomp, although I am open to suggestions.

That doesn't mean you Eddie.

See this is one of the things I like most about the Walls Of Heartache night - a lack of the anal soul fan.

Dave and his gang play some blinding oldies, a few rarer tunes and their guests play what they like. The people I've spoken to there since January are made up of soul fans and many locals just looking for a good night out.

How refreshing - even if Andy Strickland does always end up playing 'the Night' twice!!

Tim - looking forward to your set this Saturday

In the spirit of peace, love, understanding and tolerance so typical of the wider soul community, may I point out that Dave and I welcome all sorts of soul fans to Walls Of Heartache - both anal and non-anal.

There's room for you all at our 'do', and if we'd have thought of it sooner we could have had some special 'anal soul fan' membership cards made up specially.

Maybe when we get the t-shirts made... just a thought

You'd have to have a wide chest to get that lot on. Or very small print. Let me talk to our team of Italian high-fashion designers.

No lists of records we haven't got please!

Actually Eddie I might play Bar-B-Q by Wendy Rene. As for World Column - do we really want to start a hundred conversations about the Jam. I think not.

See you all tomorrow night - I'm off into the garden now with a large glass of dry white and a box of records to sort through.

A quick, but massive, thanks to everyone who resisted the lure of football and a sunny bank holiday weekend away to come down to WOH yesterday.

Some great dancing! Thanks again and we hope to see you next month - with your membership cards for our first prize draw.

Cheers!!

Like Andy, I would just like to say a quick thanks to all who came last night, with a special thanks to our guest DJ, Tim, who somehow ended up with the difficult 'try and get them up on floor and keep them there' slot on what was, for WoH, a fairly slow night.

Started slow, but turned into a good one, with special ranting_1.gif thanks to the crowd from Stanstead who made the journey and to VicG and Cressi -nice to meet other Soul-sourcers.

Once again thanks to everyone,

Dave :shhh:

Thanks for the nice comments and special thanks to Vic and Cressi for their stirling efforts on the dance floor and for not punhcing me when I had none of the records they requested.
