Yeah Steve, i still have that anniversary flyer in the lid of my old 300 box, plus the membership card. But the woven badge got lost many years ago, that used to be stuck to a wonderful old 100 box that i still have, the vinyl coated affairs (my dear departed sister bought me all those years back, i'll never let that thing go)

Great memories this thread...and as Steve has said there definitely was a upstairs balcony area with a small floor, having seen Jon Bucks brilliant archive of photos on this site, i think the guy i remember covered in tatoos and no shirt on was the fellow called "Scouse ?"

just to name a few Have become big and in demand records and can allways fill a floor,

because they had good grounding by DJ's who wasn't scared of emptying a floor if they believed

a record was good enough.

Ray Pollard : Drifter / just to name still doing the rounds and past the test of time. Promoters you need to get your heads together and make it happen

Can anybody remember an 60's acetate Richard used to play there most weeks. He named it after a known artist, might have actually been who it was by. It was a real thumping stomper with a "cracked up over you" type beat. That is all I can remember, and I have never heard the tune again since.

for a few years after 81 richard was playing most of his wigan set at clifton hall,stafford and morecambe especially his 60's/70's stuff..

i nearly sold all those early 80's stuff about 4 years ago,but thankfully held on to them apart from jan jones

It's a car park now, still get a lump in my throat when i pass it. Clifton was the best venue ever bar none , not only for it's music policy (where would todays modern scene be without venue's like Clifton with it's open music policy) but it moved the scene forwards in leaps & bounds & healed all the old Wigan/Mecca arguments.

Simply the best venue ever.

Think i might do a bit of a Clifton Hall tribute at our next "Modernism" night. (just round the corner from Clifton)

Remember lincoln drill hall,steve took tones of food,about 12 people turned up,sold about 2 bottle of pop,and a few cup of tea....

Re Clifton Hall,

I deejayed at (pretty much) every Clifton Hall Allnighter and I also promoted the 'Harlem Shuffle' events in the mid 80's.

At Harlem Shuffle, the music policy was quality 60's only 'Club Soul' inspired by the Twisted Wheel, Mojo, 1812, Attic, Tinned Chicken etc.

DJ's on the first night were:- Myself (Sean Hampsey), Malc Burton (Fellow Promoter), Dave Evison and Bill Payne.

Because of the derth (nay, total absence) of anything happening throughout the region soul wise, we sold over 750 tickets and the place was heaving.

My dear friend, the late great Dave Godin was our guest and he judged the dancing competition.

The '60's Soul' scene was on its arse around that time (85/86) and the Harlem Shuffle / Clifton Hall gig(s) kick started a hell of a lot of revived activity throughout S. Yorkshire and elsewhere.

I did the second (Harlem Shuffle - Two) some six months later which sold out in only 4 days. We had Bub on the line up, replacing Dave Evison and I well remember having to give the old boy a serious chewing off for playing 'I've Got The Need' which was considered well outside the musical policy. Sorry Bub (RIP).

After the buildings demise, the third 'Harlem Shuffle' took place at the Grattans building in Rotherham, but it was a greatly reduced affair with only about 200 in attendance (t'would be pretty good numbers by todays standards though, I guess).

It was 3/4 years later before I got the urge to promote again and was responsible (along with a couple of buddies) for 13 succesive years at Herringthorpe Leisure Centre (Rotherham) with 'The Old Farts Serious Soul Session' - a night which continued the theme of the original 'Harlem Shuffle' sessions.

Together we went on to run 'Pitches' in Rotherham and 'The Phoenix' in Sheffield, two more great (legendary) venues with true 'Across The Board' playlists.

As for the Clifton Hall Allnighters, fellow DJ Steve Mannion is right. I'm still looking for a suitable venue for a Clifton revival night, in celebration of an awesome allnighter, which, apart from breaking new ground and new tunes, was, at the time (post Wigan) the biggest thing in the country. Watch this space.

Agree the PITCHES boys doing Cleethorpes. The stuff that dreams are made of!

Must admit, it'll be nostalgic for me on all counts. Broke many a good choon at the Winter Gardens and even managed to slip my disc while deejaying. Not many jocks can add that to their repertoire!

Was a regular myself at Clifton Hall and used to arrive courtesy of British Rail via Leeds. Always remember going for something like an 8.15am train back to Leeds and getting on an 8.14 to Doncaster (oops). Found some great photos of the Clifton Hall yesterday (record corridor upstairs, pic of dance floor from stage and from balcony). Will upload them when site is back at full steam. onwards, derek

We certainly were reminiscing my sweet.... one of the "MOST" overlooked venues IMO for it's music policy.... a ONE ROOMED event thet played "whatever it wanted".... was probably "too upfront" for its time in most people's minds .... had an "oldies" and "newies" theme which is what I remember the "genres" of music being referred to back then.... none of the "multi genre" descriptions of today's scene.... by that, I mean "newies" was both 60's discoveries and current (of the decade) discoveries.... and "oldies" were, well, those already "known"....

Today we get, well, "modern" for the new/90's stuff along with "tent", "70's" (be it old or new) then there's classics, oldies, same old same old, youth club, underplayed, R&B, the list is endless.... my query would be what of the 80's stuff played at Clifton Hall.... known as "newies" back then.... but now often heard reffered to as "modern oldies" (what's that all about ) that seems to have "no place" on today's scene as it's what I call an "inbetweenie" sound.... one that's "still too new" for an Oldies room, but yet "too old" for a Modern room.... granted, albeit one or two of them these days....

I know that the philosophy of Clifton Hall has stuck with me, and my mates, since it's opening night and that's what we operate at our Ponds Forge nights.... a ONE ROOM ONE MUSIC policy.... what I call "accross the board" on our flyers... but what I know other people hap-haxardly "slag off" or state it's "an excuse to play any old crap" type of term used these days.... absolute BOLLOX IMHO....

Seems I'm getting into a rant as I read back through this so I'll just repeat my initial opinion on Clifton Hall.... very underestimated, very ignored and always overlooked as as a "forefather" of places like Stafford, etc., which these days takes the "glory" for records that where "established" at Clifton Hall throughout its duration....

One of my all time favourite venues for the reasons stated above.Used to go with Dean roach Who Later did me the dis service of being my best man .HAPPY DAYS
