Clifton Hall

Only ever went there a couple of times, once for a nighter the other time for an all ticket affair, The Harlem Shuffle, it was called, I think.

They had a couple of Harlem Shuffle do's there, they were great nights & packed to the rafters. They were all ticket affairs & sell outs, me & my mate actually printed the tickets and added a tiny bit to them, the words "no riff raff," knowing full well that virtually all present would be indeed be "riff raff." Don't think the promoter saw the funny side.

Sean Hampsey & I put the two Harlem Shuffle nights on at the CH, and as stated, were ticket affairs and sell-outs . The first was held on Saturday September 26 1987, with the second held on Saturday March 19th 1988. The first one had myself, Sean, Bill Payne & Dave Evison DJing, and had a dance competition ( still in vogue in 1987 ) judged by our late dear friend Dave Godin. Dave took quite a bit of persuading by Sean & myself to go to the night, as he thought no one would be interested in seeing/meeting him; we sprung the judging on him literally ten minutes before the start of it. Dave did an admirable job, but I know he did so tongue in cheek ..... As to the tickets ( I still have a couple of them ) bearing the wording " No Riff-Raff ", this was ASKED to be put on as a joke, as we knew that it would be taken that way by those attending .... The second Shuffle in March again had Sean and myself DJing, this time joined by the late great Bub. This one was done as a Torch " special " , as it was fifteen years to the exact weekend that the Torch closed. The two nights had a combined attendance of 1,500.

Yes Clifton Hall was one of the first all niters for me,i was there to see the no show from Dobie Gray....I think it was the first time i bought a record from a niter...James Coit.."Black Power" ..One of them tunes that never came back really but a certain dj did play it at New Century all niter last boxing Day,the first time i had ever heard it played in over 20 years....I think its due for a comeback now ranting_1.gif ..One of the many crazy mad speed head tunes that took us on the road to hell along with "Come on and swim"..."Too late".."Manifesto".."You don't mean it" etc etc 150 mph soul stomping monsters,i would stand by the dancefloor and just watch the frenzy of sweat, speed and talc...I would love to drop James Coit into a set at places like Lifeline and then move towards the exit door before the first bottle hit me  ..Ok,it stays at the back of the box for another few years yet..Any photos from Rotherham back then...

How many tickets are there Martin?

Capacity of the place?

Sean

Printing 150 Sean & if there are any left they're going on the door on the night.

The official capacity is 280 but the fire officer must have been off his head when he came up with that figure.

The bar owner likes to put a 200 seal on it though.

Will try & find some pics to post up later in the events thread.

THE NEW MECCA - ROTHERHAM CLIFTON HALL. c/o Okeh Northern Soul.

The new Mecca opened it's doors to the Soul fraternity on Friday night October 31st 1980, courtesy of local entrepreneurs, Steve Croft and Alan Senior. Both of these are well known on the scene, Steve as a Jazz/Funk and Northern DJ and Alan responsible for the Soul lists of the top sounds in the country. In the beginning Alan and Steve both believed in the policy of 'give the fans what they want' the same still exists.

The first five or so Nighters being run fortnightly on Friday nights / Saturday mornings 9p.m. - 8a.m. when in need of public created atmosphere to set the venue alight. Now the all nighter is established as the best in South Yorkshire and at the current rate of popularity it looks set to overtake the never ending Casino.

Attendances of five to eight hundred are evident if you take a trip to Rotherham. Anyone who has not should do so as you are guaranteed a night of top sounds. Moving to the sounds new records prevail which is pleasing to see as the South Yorkshire crowd are usually very slow to accept such. The new sounds are accepted with enthusiasm. The latest slogan in the Soul time promotion advertising leaflets is that at Rotherham the sounds of tomorrow are played today.

I for one hope the Rotherham Nighters continue to be a major success in the decline of our Soul scene, and I see no reason why this should not be so when coaches continue to travel from the far land of Scotland to the event.

A typical run down of events at the all nighter is as follows : -

9-10 Chris Brady. - A local young DJ who turns in the first hour, he plays a mixture of oldies from Edward Hamilton to George Benson.

10-12 Steve Mannion. - Another local DJ, Steve plats 99% oldies requests from the crowd. For example:- "Breakaway" Toni Basil, with the occasional newer sounds such as "Keys to the city" Omni.

12-2 Richard Searling. - The DJ, record buyer, and Radio Hallam Sheffield DJ turns in a spot of his current top sounds in the country spanning two decades such as "Learning how to dance" Roddie Joy and "Where I'm not wanted" Eddie Holman. From the 70's Zeezee and co. "Get ready for the get down" which is still for some reason covered as Oscar Perry and moving to the 80's Billy Nicholls "Diamond ring".

2-4 Pat Brady. - The Leeds man continues finding a few obscure 60's records. Sounds to be heard are "I can't find love" Eula Cooper, which is supposedly a Golden World acetate. This is a typical sounding Detroit sound and one of the few good 60's sounds of the year. Moving into the 80's he plays the Dells "Your song" which is now a rather established sound.

4-5 Gary Rushbrook. - Gary plays 80% newies 20% oldies, and has a talent of finding 60's style newies. Just a listen to "Standing at a standstill" Bobby Treetop c/u, "Another day" The Ascots and "Guess who loves you" Frank Wilson c/u and sounds that have been around for a couple of years, for example:- "Lady in green" Magnetics, "Somethings bad" The Nomads.

5-6 Poke. - It is nice to see the introduction of ex-Cleethorpes DJ who has been accepted by the fans by playing 70's sounds such as "Just be yourself" The Pretenders, this was c/u as The Quadraphonics and "Love music" James Bynum. Oldies include The Rimshots "Do what you feel", I hope that he stays on the road for more success and expands from being a regular at Rotherham.

6-8 Brian Rae. - If he does not do the last two hours he can always be relied upon to finish the venue off, say for the last hour with any current requests from the public. There are too many to mention lets just say "Tough girl" Billy Arnell and "When I'm gone" Brenda Holloway.

That gives a summary of the fortnightly Friday All nighters. Check it out.....................

Martin

p.s. perhaps a little late :D for a stroll up the long hill to the niter!!!

That was a lovely post about Rotherham (Dug out of Google btw).

Apart from the nights that I spent playing cards in the back room with some of the above mentioned, the only problem I had with Rotherham was the night me and Richard walked from Sheffield (in the snow - in mocassins), down the dual carriage-way, only to have the Bizzies pick us up and drop us back in Sheffiled - to start again - whereupon we got to the door (sunny, cold morning) at 6.45am - and they still charged us £2.00 to get in.....no more fuel in the tank, we then had to thumb it home.

Christ, we had it hard!

Hi, could not resist adding something to this thread. Adrian Gyte has always been like a dad to me, trying to keep me in check for over twenty odd years!!. So here goes, I work for Steve Croft and Adrian Gyte (along with my Lesley Singleton RIP xxx) they were the organiser of Clifton Hall, Cleethropes, Bradford Queens Hall (Alan Senior was also a co-promotor pre early split!!!) also Hinkley Leasure Centre, Bolton Town Hall, Warrington, Redcarr and Benson (compliments of Chris King saving the day (anniversary night)) after we lost Bradford Queens hall to the greedy student union who thought they could run it without us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Strads shop and cafe were both run by Steve, Adrian and of course Betty!!!

Strads actually stands for Sounds, Television, Radio And Disco Services!!! I would just like to mention Graham Williamson (RIP) who worked as apart of our family team on the door for many years.

Also thanks to the person on this thread who mentioned Jan Jones, this will always be my favourite record ever. Brickie (THE DOGS BOLLOCKS xxxx) always played it for me even at the 100 club when there were only 5 copies in the country. He always told me I was his independant woman. I love and miss him so much.

Love Karen (and ROB) XXX

Hey up Karen,

How have you managed to prize Rob away from the pc or is he on nights.

Was only chatting with Adrian earlier on tonight.

Was also part of his extended family & he still bloody calls me son

You sure about the Strads name?

Seem to remember Adrian telling me it was a combination of all thier names, Steve Ray (bit before your time) & Adrian.

STRADS was the second choice for the shop / cafe name ......

They were going to call it BiGbOyS ........

Hope you and your old man are well , Karen ......

Adrian has been unwell , and as yourself stated , I will not go into details , but he is recovering and " getting there " as he puts it : I will be ringing him tonight for the latest installment of our natterings and ramblings - as old men do :) ............

I spoke with Adrian last night - he was still recovering after attempting to get a word into the conversation , when Martin Dixon visited him earlier in the day :( - and he confirmed the following .......

At the beginning , STRADS stood for STeve , Ray and ADrian : The name STRADS later stood - as Mrs Wigley stated - for the more technical / professional image they were trying to purvey , i.e. , Sounds - Television - RAdio and Disco Services .....

No Malc it was deffo £2 in - we only managed to record one side of a Memorex C-90 before we left for home.

Which begs the question - is NS like any drug addiction?

Whereby the actual things that lead up to you scoring are as important as the actual high itself?

Mmmmmm!

Remember the card school in the back room, in fact I think I only went in the main hall once. I'm fairly sure it was 7 card brag - 50p in - no count back. Does anyone remember the Snooker Hall afterwards? Big Dunc introduced us to it - God knows what the staff in there thought - everyone was a bit messy. whistling.gif

i can remember one time i was supposed to be picked up in mablethorpe to go to clifton hall, sat in till around 8 30 then went looking where my lift was, only to be told they had already gone without me, it was snowing really bad ( and i mean snow piled up at the side of the road ) and i was that pissed off i walked home and got my scooter out, filled up with petrol and set off , and just remember no full faced helmets and waterproofs in them days, when i arrived in rotherham i was drenched and freezing and when asked by the ds were i was going the answer wasnt to polite, when i did get into clifton hall it took nearly 1 and a half hours to thaw out ,my mate (pete 99) was that amazed to see me he thought i was a carboard cutout, by the time i thawed out it was nearly time to go so i donned my wet sheepskin and set off again but the ride home was more pleasent than the ride there, but saying that i wouldnt have missed it for the world
