I'd like to know who was responsible for

James Coit - Black Power

& if memory serves me right..

Terrible Tom - We Were Made For Each Other.

Name & shame please.....

link

Terrible Tom was a massive record and spun by nearly all the leading names. I'm almost certain Curtis and Levine were on it; Searling too.

I've always loved it. Probably couldn't summon the energy to dance to it now though!

Black Power - James Coit - Phoof

Soul pack record, went massive, completely filled the floor at the KGB Sheffield, week in week out, fetching decent money at its height, Dancers dream if you can shift your legs, full of energy.

Its the epitomy of Northern Soul as OPPOSED TO SOUL.

There were many more records played that were worse than this. For me it was the out and out pop records like Peggy March and Muriel Day that were dire.

First person I heard play Black Power was Keith Minshull. That was the first Wigan spin.

Terrible Tom - surely not!!

The Casino gets blamed for a lot cr*p, (rightly) but other pop / garbage before the Casino;

Guy Darrell 'I've Been Hurt'

Wayne Gibson ' Under my Thumb'

The Vogues ' That's the Tune'

The Shakers ' One Wonderful Moment'

Jason Knight 'Our Love is Getting Stonger'

plus others !

Different strokes for different strokes. Nothing will ever beat the sheer awfulness of 'The Snake" for me. Unless it's 'Suzy's Serenade"....

I agree totally, but at my first allnighter at Va Vas just pre Wigan, Someone(probably Dickie S) was playing "Under My Thumb" by the Rolling Stones. Oh and "That's The Tune" by PJ Proby.(and I still have the Album with it on!).

The problem was, you could cope with good danceable pop/"Blue eyed soul" being played amongst the majority of true uptempo soul. It was just that the plot was well and truly lost by about 76, 77.and to a certain extent from 74.

Oh1 and I have always loved "The Snake" since I first heard it at a youth club in 1971. The thing is, my other favourite sound at the time was "Scratchy"

Good call. They were just known as "good disco records".

I wasn't on the scene in the '70s (too young!), but that shouldn't stop me with this list!

Gary Lewis & The Playboys - My Heart's Symphony (listen to the intro - amazing what you can do with a taut length of knicker elastic!)

P J Proby - Niki Hoeky

Lovin' Spoonful - Six O'Clock

Baltimore & Ohio Marching Band - Condition Red

I think the thing to remember is that almost all of these records sounded "right" when they were played out. We've just become more sophisticated in our tastes.

Back in the day, I feel there were a lot of people on the scene who were not soul fans as such - at least not how we might define it. They went for the people, the atmosphere, the dancing and the gear. If it was the Shakers or Eddie Parker, it really didn't matter - so long as the beat was right. Nothing wrong with that. Climate was different back then. The scene was organic, just as it is now. No-one "invented" it as a soul scene - it just grew that way driven by a bunch of post mods.

If you'd been to the Wheel you'd have heard lots of pop records like Question Mark and the Mysterions. Even the odd bit of reggae or ska.

Ramble over.

"Ski-ing in the snow" , "If you loved me", and definatly "My hearts symphony"-all piss poor. There still is some pure kack being played, "Wrong side of town"-4 vandals will definatly get me off the floor quicker than a dose of the runs!. Same with ANY Levine penned/produced disco rubbish. Am I an old original gut? Darn right, stompers for me.Same goes for beat ballads/love songs. If I want a "romantic" night ,I'll stay at home and make love to the wife. That's not what Northern Soul is all about, emphasis isand always has been on dance, not shuffle around the floor to some love-lorn indivduals beat ballad.

Well put, people need to understand the difference between Soul nights & Northern Soul nights, I prefer the former personally because I like soul at any tempo, don't care what labels go in front, like it fast, mid and slow myself but respect those like it "tradional" in your face.

With pete all the way on this ski in the snow, great northern listen to the horns, maybe not in vogue these days but still a good northern tune.

I'm with Pete and Andy on this one OK so it's not currently in vogue but a great Norman record and always has been. :)

Just remembered another absolute sh**e record played.

Unfortunately it was at the Casino (I say that cos it wasn't just the Casino that strayed from soul, 'David & The Giants' at the Mecca!). Anyway, the record was played by John Vincent. He announced it as 'Soul A Go Go' by Bob Wilson (Strings A Go Go, i.e Double Cookin had been huge then). It was a cover up of 'Chase Side Shoot Up' by Brian Bennet on UK Fontana records.

For those that don't know, this was the official BBC theme tune to their Golf progammes in the 70ts and 80ts. I remember arguing with John, as he denied it was what I said it was. I only knew, cos I owned it, and I never heard it again at the Casino.

And yes it is (was) garbage.

Helen Shapiro - Tell Me What He Said.

What were we all thinking about.....truly awful.

Her other played record 'Stop & You'll Become Aware' wasn't as bad. Not heard it for years, does it ever get played out these days?

Just dug out Terrible Tom, its as bad as ever I remember. I'm going rebury it pronto.

I don't think TMWHS ever got played anywhere apart from local youth clubs. If you listen to it, it's a fantastic 60's pop song, not northern, one of my favourites. "Stop" is great as well, miles better than the original slow version. He Knows How To Love Me is good as well.
