hi to all ..

great site , very informative.

i am a film maker,at the i am working on a Funk music documentary

true this is a soul forum/site but i need a little help.

i am seeking visual content for the docu..eg old 1980/90s

record lists from either "soul bowl" or "Blackgrape" distributors.

as at that period a lot of record dealers/dj.collectors used theses and other companies for aquiring there funk and soul (rare groove..dreaded term.lol)

could anyone help with some scans of theses lists from that period

any help would be really useful.

Also any other early 1980s soul funk scene material..e.g magazine articles.video?

i know this may not be the best site for this general request, i have posted simular on a few other funk sites..

Why don't you contact John Anderson directly at Soul Bowl, he's still trading and I'm sure he would have some of his old lists knocking about, pretty sure John could help you out if you are prepared to cross his palm with silver or anyone else who may offer material.

Contact Paul Mooney on here for Black Grape, he is still in touch with the owner I think and may be able to help.

I do have these as well as loads of B&S from then, but they are in someones loft at the moment, let me know if the mags are any good and I can try and retrieve them.

I've got copies of an early 80s fanzine edited by Steve Bryant, called Souled Out, one of which contains a partial Black Grape sales list. It's all Southern and Deep soul though, and was designed to tie in with an article about John Richbourg and his labels, but I was getting the Black Grape lists at the time and I don't remember much funk being included in the regular lists. (Incidentally the list includes Bill Brandon's The Street's Got My Lady for £1.50) Unfortunately I didn't keep any of the regular lists, but Garry Cape ran Black Grape and he posts here as well.

If you want to stay with the scene in the 80s I've got an article in the September 1982 edition of The Face which might be of interest. The rare groove scene arguably had its beginnings in various clubs and warehouse parties in London in the very early 80s - Le Kilt, Le Beat Route, The Wag, The Mud Club, The Warehouse and, the best of them all and my favourite club in the early 80s, The Dirtbox. The move to illegal warehouse parties meant that the club goers woudn't wear their best clothes, so ripped jeans, boots and workwear were popular. This look was called Hard Times, and it coincided with a renewed interest in tough 70s funk and the best of the then current funk. The Face article looks at the Hard Times thing, with photos of Steve Lewis who was the DJ at Le Beat Route, Phil and Robert of The Dirtbox, and punters in ripped jeans, and gives a playlist of recommended music that includes The Valentine Brothers' Money's Too Tight To Mention, J. Walter Negro's Shoot The Pump, and Brother D's How We Gonna Make The Black Nation Rise. The article doesn't mention Jay Strongman, but he DJ'ed at both The Dirtbox and The Wag, and was an important figure in the London scene in the early 80s - if you can get in touch with him he would probably be a good source of information on that period.

I've also got some flyers somewhere for some of the warehouse parties which I can scan for you - if I can find them.
