Whats The Rarest Re-issue

A couple of years ago had 2 copies of "Roy Hamilton - Let The Music Play" on Adey C's "Kent" label. These were large centre hole, black & white labels, 4 Diamonds design, even with Kent address - I assume they weren't legal, but haven't seen any copies since, anyone shed any light.

Des

I think it may have originated from a bloke with a dodgy syrup in one of the countries in North America. He used to sell a lot of Island soul to old West Indians who went mad for this track.

The Val Palmer track was on an album called "Tamla hits" on UK Redifusion - I used to have it

But Ian Levine used to play it at the Mecca and I am sure it was a US 45 he was playing - even though it was a UK album they were all US recordings

Val Palmer is listed in JM's book as a US 45

The Val Palmer USA original has a black label and was pressed in vinyl. It does exist as a USA 45, although I haven't seen one for an age, 15 years or more. Perhaps someone could put a scan up.

possibly 'Hit Records' ???

I have it on yellow 'Twin Hits' - flip to 'Uptight, Ritchie Brown' (which is also a boot according to a previous thread on this one)

it was Twin Hits - black label, silver text may jog your memory, heavy vinyl if i remember correctly.

If anyone has the rare coloured bootleg of Edward Hamilton - BDYW - I'd like to buy a copy or loan one to document and scan. I'm willing to pay £30 website credit to borrow it for a week. PM me if you can help.

How odd, I always thought this was on a black label styrene bootleg?

i'd be more than happy if you told me it wasn't a boot Pete :D:lol:

I got this record nearly 30 years ago for the Ritchie Brown side. Recently put a scan up in another thread and was informed it was a boot, that's pretty much all I know about it

The rarest boots (re-issues/pressings)

Combinations - whatcha gonna do - kellmac (could be the rarest)

gwen owens - wanted and needed - velgo

lou pride - coming home in the morning - suemi

Lou Pride reissue is about as rare as a Disco demand copy of Footsee, there must be at least 4 different Suemi pressings of it (Blue, blue different design, white, yellow) then there's a legit reissue and also a Goldmine one.

  • 4 years later...

Most of the records mentioned in this thread were pressed in large quantities in the 1970's. Many sold in hundreds via Keith Minshall in his balcony stall at the Casino. No way of telling how many have survived but the number for sale at any given time reflects commonality rather than rarity. Lennie Curtis doesn't crop up often but that could reflect the original is pretty hard to come by. The Dennis Edwards reissue from a 1990's Detroit source probably turned up in fewer numbers like it's contemporaries as potential demand had shrunk. Any reissues selling for juicy prices eg Magicians on Chartmaker probably reflect the scarcity of the real thing rather than rarity of the reissue.

It has crossed my mind several times, as to just which re-released track or tracks are the hardest to find, and most expensive. I have many of the old classics bought in the late 70's, so have a kind of interest. or are they all worth pennies?

I dunno either. Simon kept his modus operandi very close to his chest. I just know he'd be down @ Monarch every other week picking up his 'legal reissues'. I think PB was either a 'front' company or possibly even the guy who mastered the records..........?

Ian D biggrin.gif

he also did   salvadore, gto's,george blackwell and a couple of others.....they were very good almost akin to forgeries

Was this pressed with the instrumental on other side. If so wouldn't SS need the original tapes?

Yep and it's a keeper. Still prefer it to Frank Wilson's edition...

If bootlegs count the rarest "reissue" is probably a 45 which was pressed and "confiscated".

I can't think of any examples but didn't that happen to the Chuck Cockerham record ?

:hatsoff2: HI ALL..FRANK, Back in 2009 I posted my thoughts about The Frank Wilson since then I have sold my copy to a top dealer for £40 as he had a customer who wanted it, and this has set a bench mark for the going value of this 1st pressing under the name of Eddie Foster,

However the top rarest bootlegs that I have are the SOUL SOUNDS white label  pressings of 69-70, & the Ambassadors on JOX all UK pressed Bootlegs from the 1960s are much rarer than any US pressing, but the price may not correspond to the 45 :g: DAVE K
