    Just in, release news from Soul Direction Label release and sleeve notes follow below... Soul Direction are pleased to announce Their Next Release. Sharisma – “Trouble, Trouble” / “Something Wonderful” / “Love Is the Way” – SD021 Release Date – Tuesday 7th May 2024 Available to Order – Monday 29th April 2024 Available for the first time on vinyl courtesy of Emandolynn Music & Manny Campbell. Emandolynn Music did release the tracks, but in digital format only. This prompted Soul Direction to strike a deal to license the tracks for a 7” vinyl release and believed that showcasing all 3 tracks together was the perfect package. This being the way it was meant to be released. Manny Campbell heard the group play in a talent showcase in 1969 and shortly after signed them up for a recording session. Their first recordings were at Upper Darby Studios “Love is the way/ something wonderful” recorded in 1969. Both as demos. He then decided to upgrade the sound and took them Sigma Sound Studios around 1970 to record “Trouble Trouble”. They initially never had a ‘name’ for the group, so Manny came up with Sharisma, which could have been a spin on the term Charisma as they were seen to have a certain charm. They liked it and decided to use it. “Trouble, Trouble” was meant to be the group’s first release, but unfortunately before they could finish the process, the main lead singer was drafted to the Vietnam War (He was an enlisted reserve at the time). “Trouble, Trouble” was written and produced by Manny Campbell as a ‘letter’ to his firstborn son who at the time was getting into some troubles himself at the time. These tracks sat in an unmarked tape box for many years. Because it was a ‘demo’ Manny Campbell shelved it due to the missing band members and moved onto the next project as this was just one of many tracks he was involved in. “Love is the way/something wonderful” was recorded at Upper Darby Studios. “Trouble, Trouble” Was recorded at Sigma Sound Studios. Sigma Sound was strongly associated with Philadelphia soul and, in the 1970s, the sound of Gamble and Huff’s Philadelphia International Records so it was the perfect fit for the sound Manny was looking for. The main recording Engineer for “Trouble Trouble” was Joe Tarsia. He was the owner of Sigma Sound and was Gamble and Huff’s main engineer on a lot of their work. The additional musicians on these tracks were the famous Trammps, who later recorded for Buddah & Atlantic records.     I forgot to comment on your theory of the Vows' "Buttered Popcorn" being the Contours. I listened to their version several times. The lead singer sounds suspiciously like Billy Gordon's gravelly-style voice (e.g. the voice he used on most of his mid to fast tempo cuts (basically ALL but his couple of ballads like "That Day When She Needed Me", when he used his smooth, probably normal voice). Not only that, but I don't hear any of The Vows recognisable voices, and the group, as a whole, sounds very, very much like the 1961 Contours. Furthermore, the sound of the instrumentation, acoustics, and recording all sound like an early '60s ('61 fits best) recording, rather than a 1965 recording. I wouldn't be shocked to find out that this was a previously unissued, vaulted, Contours' 1961 cut, like so many of their others that were left in the can, which only were finally released on digital files. Motown wasn't ever going to put any marketing push on ANY L.A. Motown artist, except Brenda Holloway at that time. That release was probably just a favour to Hal Davis and Marc Gordon, to keep them happy. So, it didn't matter what was on the flip. Your theory could well be spot on. I wouldn't bet a bunch of money on it either way. But, I certainly can't say it has no teeth.

    Thanks Yank. That Funky Jazz version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "My Favorite Things" is great! I think I saw this at United Record Distributors when it was out, but didn't think it would be any good. The flip has terrible acoustics and overall sound quality. Very unprofessional. I assume that Orr Records was co-owned by Richard Orr and Tel-Fi (James Porter). They released a weird mix of music styles, raucus Southern Soul, Chicago-style Soul, Blues, and Jazz. Sherman Nesbery wrote The Deboniers' song for Richard Pegue's Nicolet Music. Micheal Nesbery, who went to my high school, I believe was his cousin. Sherman was a songwriter who wrote for several small indie Chicago labels related to Renee and other Leo Austell and Bob Lee-related labels. Later, he became one of DJ Richard Pegue's stable of songwriters for his Penny and Nickel Records. He was also a singer, both in groups and as a solo act. He recorded for a couple labels (including Toi) as a solo act as Verbel Domino, and with a stage last name starting with "N" (but I can't remember it). And I can't remember the Southside groups he was in other than The Mod Swingers, (Little Sherman and The Mod Swingers) ("The Price of Love" on James Porter's (Tel-Fi owner's) Sagport Records). Do you remember him, and his other stage name, or any of the earlier Southside groups that he was a member? Sherman also wrote "We Don't Have To Be Over 21" for The Jackson Five.

    The Four Wonders were from Indiana but were brought to Ohio to record by Eddie McGhee and John Brinson. Is there any evidence to suggest a connection to the Imperial Wonders ? Nothing I can find immediately. However I wrote an article on here some time ago which involved the Imperial Wonders, and what was clear they changed line up frequently with members leaving and then returning. There seemed to be a real churn. The internet rumour was that the IW’s were also the Cool Sounds but this is not really true according to what Al Boyd told me. The went to LA to see what they could do and one member left to join the Cool Sounds formed by Bobby Sanders. There is a reference to Al Boyd and another member leaving IW’s and then rejoining from another band. Could this be the Four Wonders ? I guess we’ll never know……or will we ?
