Be Young Be Foolish... BUT BE HAPPY!! A full-on celebration of Wigan Casino and its legendary Northern Soul all-nighters when kids from blue collar lives all across the country could escape 70's tedium and get Out on the Floor and Dance Dance Dance.

It's September 1981, the last night of the Casino, and Britain is changing. For Danny, Maxine, Suzanne and Bolton boy Eugene Northern Soul has been their way out - a weekly escape hatch!

The Wigan all-nighter was the highlight of the week with Soul Galore and eight hours of classic soul, sweat and passion, to a beautiful soundtrack of Detroit and Philly, east and west coast winners.

But Time Will Pass You By, and as the club opens its doors for one last time, Eugene takes us back on an emotional journey to his very first heady night at Wigan, when he saw and fell in love with Maxine. This potent mix of drugs, sex, love and classic 60's and 70's American soul music changed his life, cos like the songs says... It'll Never Be Over For Me...

Specially re-commissioned to help celebrate the end of the Octagon's 40th Anniversary Season, Once Upon a Time in Wigan - LIVE! re-unites the team that created the full-on and funky Eight Miles High, the smash hits Blonde Bombshells of 1943, and Oh What A Lovely War.

Featuring a live band of brilliant actor musicians pumping out classic Northern Soul tracks in the Octagon Theatre's signature style, Mick Martin's high octane script is brought vividly to life in this unmissable tribute to the very heart of Soul - Wigan Casino 1973 -1981!

Keep the Faith!

Please be advised smoking will take place on stage during the show.

No, it's NOT the original show.

It's more like 'Once Upon A time In Wigan' - the Musical.

Instead of playing the original records... they've got a live band singing the songs instead.

Don't know about you... but I reckon the original music is THE most essential part of the play.

The thought of having some tribute band singing the songs instead... its sacrilege!

Even the best musicians in the world could never recreate the memories those songs hold for each and every one of us.

I'll give it a miss thanks

Me thinks so to Joan. seen the original play in Manchester two years running with different cast members and it was fcuking brilliant. The play mirrored my life even getting made redundant in 1982. Cant see for the life of me why they should change it.

We saw it twice too... with different casts... but both shows bloody brilliant.

Have no idea who had the ' live band ' brainwave wacko.gif

I do know it has absolutely nothing to do with Paul Sadot... he was appalled when he found out... and rightly so!

The play was something anyone would have been proud of... must be heartbreaking to see it come to this.

Yes , and ask them to come along in clothing / attire like the audiences does for " The Rocky Horror Show " , and ask them to throw stimulants in capsule form at the stage during certain times .......

I love the comment by Paul Sadot in his posting , that the " revised " show being like " The Wheeltappers & Shunters Social Club " ......

I can just picture Dustbin Stanley as Colin Crompton .......

" Order please , ladies and gentlemen ; give the turn a chance " ........

We did.

I take it you recognised my laugh... really need to do something about that :D

 Everyone did Joan  .....

Like the soul song says... This is "pushing a good thing too far".... I will Keep the great memory of the fantastic stage play and leave this version wellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll alone...

I thought the original was a great concept for the 1st two years but the 3rd year was pushing it a bit too far with a good many empty seats apart from the Friday/Saturday shows..

I fear this different production could taint all the power and drama of past shows but who knows..

If you go then enjoy and i look forward to the feedback but i aint holding my breath...

Maybe that horse is gonna be flooged to death :D ,i do hope not)

Saw this a few years ago at Greenwich, and thought it was awesome. I think it gave some idea of what Wigan must have been like-and the music was the main ingredient that held the whole play together, can't see it working without the original soundtrack.

Was the original play ever filmed, does anyone know? -love to see and hear it again.

Magoo.

just glad i went...

Agreed. Saw it in Coventry with my wife a couple of years ago, she's not a soulie but she really enjoyed it and i think it gave her an insight into why i'm desperate to disappear out a couple of times a month and not come home til the morning, why i get excited when the postman comes, why i play unpopular 60s music full blast on vinyl and not CDs.

Coventry was packed with faces from all over. I don't think she could believe that so many people coming together in one place without prior arrangement could all know each other, but that's our scene.

Brilliant play. Glad i saw it before it was butchered.

but he got it so right

It was devised Shaun. I had great actors and we spent 2 solid weeks setting up scenes and improvising them. I even showed the actors news footage of the era, so they would get a feel of how different it was to nowadays. They watched ALL available footage from wigan days...I took them to nighters and nights, to dance and meet and listen to soulies. Everyone helped them, was friendly and supportive. So the imput was massive. I directed it and chose to use film and worked with a designer to get the right staging...costumes..the guys trousers were made by one of the , now old, ladies that used to make them to order back in the day! It was very detailed...Mick wrote the script and wrote it well. But, its not a novel. It needs staging! Thats the part, that appears easy, but is very complicated and precise. And the most unthinkable thing to do to it, is making it into a musical, where the black artists, with a long history of repression in the U.S.A, are replaced by white English actors! I mean, how much thought has gone into that?! Shocking and upsetting!

saw it first time round on its closing night in manchester, absolutley brilliant...so why are they changing it with a 'live' band ffs? could never be done with live acts at niters as it was but to do this at what was such a wonderful production (all credit to Paul Sadot and the cast on that night i saw the play) is as Paul S quotes - scarilege

THIS CRAP IS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE PLAY THAT MY COMPANY TOURED TO THOUSANDS OF SOULIES IN 2004!

THIS IS A MUSICAL WHERE, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, WHITE ACTORS SING THE SONGS TO A HOUSE BAND. A bit like THE WHEELTAPPERS AND SHUNTERS SOCIAL CLUB!

They have been deliberately trying to confuse in the advertising and I had to ask them to remove a newspaper quote about my play, that they were using to advertise theirs!

I devised this play, based on my experiences of going to wigan and Mick Martin wrote it. Unfortunately, as he was a friend of 20 years, I trusted him to look after it and not sell it to the highest bidder. MISTAKE.

The guy is not and was not, a soulie. The production worked in its presentation, the actors, the film, the setting, but, most of all, the use of a real and narrative sound track. Mark Babbage, the director, hasn't got a clue about our scene and its soulful ethic! If he did, he wouldn't dare trivialise it , by doing a musical execution of something that means a lot, to a lot of people.

Watch out for Winstanley popping up at the opening!

From the heart

Paul-s

Im pleased you commented on this Paul

I was going to go see it ...I saw the original play it was true to the northern soul scene as I remember it way back ....it recieved a standing ovation at the end

Brilliant

I will give this a wide berth!!!

I saw it twice at the Contact Theatre and once at the Lowry it was excellent, as Bear Soul and Wulfie said, how can you re-create the opening sequence, Darkness, Dancers and the first few bars of Breakaway sounding round the theatre with a live band!!:lol:

Effin brill!.Saw it last friday evening.Superb from start to finish. We didnt see it the first time around because it was a sellout.Like this time around i wanted to take my eldest daughter to see it it was that good but this is also sold out until the 28 th june.Humorous and my partner isnt a soulie per se but she loved it too.Forget the politics if another version came out we would be going so if you wanna have a go then keep the damn thing going "KEEP THE FAITH".
