  4. Well I've just got up and guess what, another dozen or so contributions in my inbox, thanks again to everyone who's sent money, offered money, records etc, PLEASE DON'T SEND ANYTHING IF IT'S GOING TO LEAVE YOU SHORT! But thank you for the lovely offers.

I was told maybe I shouldn't announce totals as you never know who may be reading but just for the purposes of this let's just say it's my money and I can give it to who I like.

As it stands this morning we have had payments from 111 people and I would say 30% of those don't know John.

    The total stands at...

    £2205

Proof, if ever it were needed, of the high level of trust, faith and respect with which we soulies hold each other.

What a fantastic thread this is !! Wonderful !!

  5. ........, remember, we all used to do this without the aid of a price guide until a few years ago.

Think you've stumbled onto something here Pete. What influence has the appearance of said price "guides" had on prices?

John Manship quotes his guide as representing values achieved through his auctions. Usually, tip-top mint condition records, being auctioned by a dealer who is respected by the majority of collectors. You would expect a reasonable premium on these particular prices. The problem of course, is whether that is then taken as "the price". I find it exptremely difficult to stomach VG+ or even EX+ records being quoted with prices based around these guides.

There's just been a very decent copy of Rose St John/Wonderettes - Mend My Broken Heart finished on Ebay. I've seen this 6 times in set sales in the last couple of months at varying prices and conditions between £125 and £175. The one on Ebay has gone for $115, approximately £75. I do hope auctions set the future values, as that for me is much more realistic.

  6. CAN SOMEONE TELL ME THE VALUE PLEASE

    Hiya Mike,

I sold a minty one about 6 months ago for £40 (ish), reckon that would be about the going rate.

  8. Depends where the DH is really. They are obviously just random and can end up obscuring wording on the labels and look messy aswell. So it's understandable that some, let's say, demanding collectors might be put off.

Generally though, they reflect the nature of what the record is. One which never made it as a seller and ended up in the Bargain Bin for ten-a-penny. What most of our beloved records were really. So, it's swings and roundabouts for me.

  9. Funny this, was it not the council of the day that played a major part in closing the Casino in the first place, now they want to celebrate it, cue all that is naff to get involved with this little beauty, as ever let's go back in time and milk the golden cow who's udders are well shot already without it being milked anymore, quite frankly this type of thing is total bollocks, I don't subscribe to any of it, keep the faith on this one or rather stick it where the sun don't shine.

    Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Posted more or less the same on a link in Facebook when the story first hit the local papers here. It's front page news by the way in the WEP (Wigan Evening Post). Just a coincidence no doubt, that it's in the immediate run up to Supermarket Soul at the Grand Arcade too!!

  10. It looks very much like the 70's boot I had a few years ago.

Not sure if there was ever an official demo release that had that label design, might be wrong though.

And if I had any doubt over it's authenticity I would bung it up in an auction.

  11. Hey up.

Mine's styrene, Monarch (MR) stamped with 'scratched' Monarch matrix 58721 and Atco matrix 65C-9290-21. Also has classic Atlantic AT scratched in with the LW mark aswell.

  12. Tobacco stained condensation in the record bar...which dripped from black ceiling Stalactites.

Toilets blocked and ankle deep in piss most of the time.

Carpets & furniture from the 1930's,40's & 50's, so dark you didn't realise the chewing gums stuck to your arse.

But it was ours every bloody weekend......BRILLIANT.....

Only thing that comes close nowadays is Prestatyn IMHO and thats only twice a year

My sentiments exactly. It was a dump but a dump I didn't mind being dumped in laugh.gif

Nice one Pete. Not heard as clear a recording as that before thumbup.gif

  13. may be wrong but think the orange one was first closely followed by the blue at the time, cracking tune and well worth the £50, but anyone can have mine for a drop down price of £49.99 laugh.gif only joking russ!!

Not sure which was first but the Blue is rarer. Seen a minter for going for £100 in the last couple of months ohmy.gif

  14. FOR ME ITS EVERYTHING THAT WAS SPUN THERE!!!!

WHAT A VENUE - 9 YEARS OF GOOD,BAD AND THE UGLY BUT ALL BRILL

    YOURS WIGANER1!!!

I've racked me brains on this because as stated there was always another track appearing to become the favourite of the time. I must have had a new favourite every month.

In the end though I've come up with "Sandi Sheldon-You're Gonna Make Me Love You". Top tempo and always a brilliant dance floor reaction when that bump, bump, bump, bump, bassy intro. reverberated through the building. Ahhhh, memories.

  15. Timmy Toad, l never attended this nighter, and am appauled to learn that a PUNK record was played at a soul venue.

I've been trying now for about 5 years to be heard by mainly promoters to start the what should be a natural progression and "evolution" of what is truely Soulful, why does it have to be that all things "Soulful" are oldies????

I've been on this Scene for 38 years, l love all soul music, Mickey Moonshine being my all time favorite, great classic oldie, The Epitome Of Sound, Purple Haze,Baby Boy, Don Thomas, Chuck Jackson, Walter Jackson, Baby Washington, the list is endless, all oldies all great tracks and all liked by me.

Yet unlike some l have moved with the times never once forgetting where my roots are, l appreciate every facet of the soul scene where it's origins begin, where they progress and diversify, and yet still we come to a dead end as regards "Oldies ,Newies,Modern"........(70's 80's 90's) and no mans land, so if there are these main catagories, does that mean 70's 80's and 90's dont exist ?.....l say that because when coming face to face with die hard "OLDIES SOULIES" they are only too ready to slag off "MODERN", please explain to me why some of these class anything that is soulful dating post 60's is to them "DISCO CRAP", l really need to know this because to be very honest l am rapidly losing the will to live.

I support as many local and national venues as little old me can humanly manage, and week after week get the same old biased, unfounded negative comments.

So as l have already mentioned just a few "OLDIES Artists" Thought l'd mention just a few more with a bit of zing behind em...................................

    Aretha Franklin "Integrity" 1986 !

    Drizabone "Pressure" 1994 !

    D.J.Genesis "Tribute To Betty" !!!!!!!! 2005 !!!!

    Skip Mahoney "Janice" !!!! 1980.

Keni Burke "Let Somebody Love You" !!! 1981.

Randy Brown " Always In The Mood" !!!! 1978.

Johnny Bristol " Love No Longer Has A Hold On You " !!!! 1980

Greg Perry "It Takes Heart" !!!!1982.

Flaming Emeralds "Have Some Everybody" !!!! 1977.

    Micheal Proctor " Love Dont Live " !!! 1996.

    Joi Cardwell " Let It Go " !!! 2000.

Ron Hall & The Mutha Funkaz " The Way You Love Me " !!!! 2005.

All the above have been played in almost every venue that l have attended over the years at one point or another, So what makes these suitable to be played in the "OLDIES" rooms when others are dismissed and labeled "KRAPP" !!!!!!!!!!!!........l think this is what most intelligent people would consider to be a hypocritical.

Well l and Gilly do for starters.

So you tell me what are oldies ??, because the most popular negative comment about modern is " if it aint 60's it's modern", which also begs the question " where does cross-over fit in ? ".

Why on earth can it just be" Simply Soul Music " because thats what it is. "Simple Dot Com".

As for a Punk record being played well , maybe l should shave my head, wear a pair of cut off Levi's, Boot's and braces, approach a D.J. with a "Modern " record l want playing and demand the D.J. comply...............Fookin Hell l wish l'd of read this before going to lifeline, then maybe Cliff Steele would of played the record l requested (He said he would, was gonna make it his last one), Wee "Try Me".

Wee Try Me !!!!!!!! we fookin do.

    Sandi and Gilly said ditto.

That is a really great post Sandi. But, take me back 30 years (I know some of them tracks weren't around then) and I would have wholeheartedly disagreed with you. However, having been off the scene for quite a while and then coming back onto it, I've realised that some of my old prejudices were exactly that, prejudice. Don't get me wrong, "oldies" are still my first love, but with having kids that love the "crossover/modern" stuff and actually listening to it for a change, I have found I actually can move my feet to it and enjoy doing so.

Back to the post point though, I always had trouble at niters. Not being one to indulge in any 'energy' products (yes, there was one or two of us), I always fell asleep around 5 o'clock. Always ended up full of bruises from people kicking and stepping on me. More fool me for falling asleep on the dance floor I guess

  16. What's the cheapest for one of these ? Not bothered about label/issue, condition VG+ or better

    Cheers

    Hiya mate,

I was asking about this on this thread the other week......

7th reply down says about £125 for a demo, £175 for a black issue or £15 for an orange 70's re-issue. Assume that's probably decent condition.

  17. Picked up this immaculate ACE SPECTRUM up a couple of months back for £4 in a south London junkshop, along with a nice little pile of records, no bankbreakers, but some nice sounds all for pennies. Have noticed that the publishing is quoted as 'Nick o Val' but I'm sure I've seen a picture where the publishing was credited differently. Also in that picture I am sure there were some slight other label differences, i.e the position of the 'vocal' moniker etc.

The run out on this is ST -A - 29220 - 7, nothing else. Is this a boot or was there more than one issue with differing credits etc? Main reason I ask is that I've just seen this for sale publicly in the last week for £50. Interesting to know whether the guy concerned knows the status of the record?

Apologies if this record has been covered before in such a manner.

Mine has the Pub: Nick-O-Val with the VOCAL just above it on the right of the label. But the matrix in the run-out is slightly different. Mine is ST-A-29220-4 not 7. It also has the tell-tale AT and another squiggle that I can't make out.

    Blunny.
