Garv fair point about the subject matter, I should read the title as well as the posts should know only too well that there will be variance from initial point. Should say the only bit directed at you was the Weller comment, the rest of the post was referring to the large number of posts where I felt we were judging a definition of soul by our Northern Soul values. Apologies if came over a bit preachy and rereading my post Mr Weller did get it a bit tight, Im not too keen on him but he is not the worst (Mr Hucknall comes to mind)!! As said I do get a bit frustrated when singers with feeling are called soul singers hence my gospel etc point, certainly not referring to the politics however as feel that is too personal and not relevant to here, really referring to the actual style and reason behind the difference in voices and style. I do think some other posts emphasise my point re Northern not always being worried about soul content and suppose that worries me as if you read history that is what led to the influx of pop stompers in mid 70's. And again emphasise that I do like some blue eyed soul and have certainly danced to my share of poppier Northern (not always by white artists as others have said.). However since I am only a casual visiter to the scene these days not sure why I worry! ????????/ I think people are confusing Northern Soul and Soul here, they can be two separate beasts often, and I am a major Northern Soul fan so not having a go, I was one of the first to play Tony Colton in the 80's so cant be too critical, however I do think often Northern Soul people have no interest in soul in its wider genre. I also think there is a lot of confusion in the above statements especially the singing with feeling makes it soul type statement, that ignores a lot of previously documented links with soul and gospel singing and the call and response structure, also to a lesser extent the connections with improvised jazz phrasing. Due to this there is no doubt in my mind soul is predominately an Afro-American (or Blackamerican to use an oft quoted DG saying) invention, had its peak in the late 60's to mid 70's, although there continues to be be great soul music produced from that period until today, and is done best by black Americans, there are good white soul singers (Eddie Hinton, Dusty Springfield etc) but people like Paul Weller, Jamoriqui etc I find quite insulting to include. As someone said there are a number of black singers today that probably are not the greatest soul singers (and again I buy a lot of new release soul which I enjoy but often does not measure up to what I call classic soul) but that is due to evolution of style and less gospel influence in my opinion. Re the evolution of soul I would suggest reading Leroi Jones - Blues People or Ben Sidrans (or is Archie Shepps) Black Music, although neither talk specificly about soul, they have great evidenced theories on the evolution of black music. Hopefully not preaching but its something I think is far more misunderstood now than ever. What went on in his head was a diagnosed illness that Pete had to live with till his death, although not sure this was diagnosed in the 70's. His anger was driven by his passion for Northern Soul, which was his life. I often have a wry smile when I wonder what he would have to say about todays scene and the people. To be honest dont feel comfortable discussing on web board but he is a classic example where history is often a mis-story (to misquote a quote made by someone far more eloquent than me). Jock

He was a character, but more than that too, I got to know him well through my friendship with Dave Molloy (soul legend) and Pete had far more to him than the mad character everyone seen. However, the mad character side was prominent, went back to his place with SS member Melandthensome (Ian Melia) once and Pete was in playful mood, Mel recognised this and scarpered upstairs, Pete put on that pop song Jack theGrocers Son, started to lecture me about how perfect the beat was, and how much he liked 60's pop, as usual i disagreed, he then proceed to sit in my chest making me listen to this song for about 20 minutes till I agreed it was great!! All I could hear was Mel pissing himself. Noone should also forget Petes influence on records in the 80's, his search for new stuff in the days of Stafford etc was relentless. As you said not everyones cup of tea, I had my fallouts with him over the years, but a very special person. I still miss him. Jock

Okay whole weekend in, thought catch up on doing reviews,meant to take my mind off not being able to make it to Lifeline, didnt work just made me realise I am really missing my Northern at moment! Not something I have felt for a while. First cds I picked were amazing, really want to ask about loads of records or talk about more than 3 but figured not fair so will stick to rules (who is the cruel bastard who said only 3! Anyway first was Als and Kollas, seriously great cd, only 1 record not to my taste and for those that know me that will be amazed as I am well known as a moaning face b*****d! What made this cd more amzing for me is I am not big on girly soul but this was packed with femme monsters!! So my 3 picks are Pauline Shivers - Wont You Come Back Home Drum roll, walking pace beat, then those great husky vocals, she obviously liked a fag. Great changes in her range, the sort of record you just want to get lost in a big dance floor to. When she hits that high note it hurts, great break in the middle and then she goes for it. My type of girly soul. Beverly Shaffer - Where Will You Be WOW - can even forgive it the guitar at start, sultry voice, slow beat but well tight drummer, and sympathetic horns and great triangle (sounds crazy but the triange can be very atmosperic). Sure have had this before but returned it. what a twat. This is my type of Northern. I would definitely have been her soldier boy! This was biggest surprise of swap for me. Ella Woods - I Need Your Love - This isnt crossover, its not anything but SOUL, aching vocals, superb backing, she knows she will get her man, that would be so nice. When she holds a note my ears just shake. Probably one of the best records EVER. Not the saddest soul record but it tears me up. Up there with the 4 tops! Nuff said. Okay now on to Nick G's, very good cd, real good mix, a few quite above mid tempo but might be just an age thing for me!! Don Varner - More Power To Ya - Great piano intro, the opening line is "I struggled hard all my life", with a consistent rythm section behind him, you know its Southern Fried soul like KFC can only dream about. Great horns, drums coaxing his voice along, just a great soul record, and his voice gets better as he goes on till almost pleading at the end, but always controlled. Awesome vocalist. Buddy Connor - When You Are Alone Almost said last one was almost crossover style but was scared the crossover police might cross over from one of their current threads and become cross over that and chastise me. However no doubt to me, this is awesome crossover, great vocals, great insistent beat, soul with a capital SOUL! (Keep trying to convince myself that my cheap imitation of this(WFB) is almost as good, its not. Not much is!) A Dave Withers record was it not,if so no surprise there! Jimmy Raye You Must Be Losing Quivering voice, pleads with his woman the beat picks up, but then its just smooth soul singing, great backing girls who know how to keep in time with their man, and then Jimmy ups the ante vocally, and I just curl into a ball and listen. My favorite girlie backing singers,anyone know who they were? Chalkys next, and serious serious quality music on here, not one bad tune, our tastes are very similar Mr Chalk, you just have far better records! Sing Magowan - Just In The Nick Of Time - Superb opening, my ears pricked, great walking pace beat (an old Pete Lawson saying), superb smooth vocal, always keeping pace with the backing, subtle backing this time but very effective. Can only pay this highest compliment is that I would love to have heard this out for the first time as it would make me dance, that doesnt happen very often now!! Sir Ceaser - Show Me The Time - Wow, something I remember very well but never knew who it was. Amazing atmospheric builder, great lyrics, builds a couple of times in the middle and then he comes back "Show me the type of man who doesnt need a woman", sings with conviction. Maybe not the most traditional soul voice but an awesome Northern Soul record and forget playing it as ender, right in the middle of the night for me!! Freddie Scott Mr Heartache Drum roll starts, smooth soul voice, rumbling horn, this kills me from intro on. His voice builds into a plead and there he is Mr Heartache, great memories of this at Allanton, 6.30 a full dance floor (well all 80 or so that were there) dancing to a beat ballad with a deep soul vocal, I cant describe this record as it still kills me 20 years later. Then the crescendo at the end, oops run for the repeat button, ahh heaven. All I can say after hearing this again I was on to Mr Dyson to buy it back! Next was Pauls, real mix on here, picks for me were JB Bingham - All Alone By The Telephone -swirling strings, husky sexy voice, must be in the 70's. Another of those quivering voices, must be another broken hearted soul man. Then it builds Great subtle drum beat, can just see all those Glasgow trendies who had somehow found their way to a hellhole called Newmains where Scotlands best modern night was to be educated to beautiful music like this! Soul Brothers Incorporated - Pyramid - Great bongo and flute (?) intro, followed by those Galaxy chocolate like vocals, his love grows and the record keeps building, like a monster Northern Soul dancer. I want to hate this record due to its overkill at one point, I cant, it reduces me to a wibbly wobbly wreck, and makes me want to fall in love again! Roy Hamilton - Reach Out For Me - Lalalalalalal then that voice that makes me wish Elvis had never been born, total MOR song, total lounge backing, Mrs Mills on piano, I fucking love it, Roy Hamilton just glides. Took me a while to like Big City soul (probably coz it makes me think of Ady singing) then Ady introduced me to Roy Hamilton, and now it gets me excited. The almost operatic backing sounds so right with Roy. This song is just the dogs bollocks! Okay, am exhausted with that session, another bunch for next weekend!! Cheers Jock

The other side Since I Lost You was big spin, covered up as ????, for Pat Brady (?). More questions than answers but always prefered the slow side (as you would expect Lenny), again interested in value as one of those trying to buy back (for slow side!). Dont like this thread I paid £10 for the Caressors and £20 for the Magnetics, sold them both 10 years later for a huge profit on my purchase price but............. a huge loss on todays value, especially the Caressors, Did decide wanted to buy the 100 or so tunes I sold, think need to take a night class in bank robbing to have any chance!! Coincidence Leo, went looking through 45's last night (so good to have them back!) to find the Rick James that had plays and it was Fool On The Street, was played at Rotherham, great little tune. I am sure the 45 is very different to the album version (Busting Out Of L7 ???) where he has an interesting monolugue about Mary Jane. Gareth didnt mean he wasnt soulful, just he wasnt the rip roaring gutbucket type singer like Womack or Teddy P, he was certainly soulful to me.
