Rod, I'm not sure you understood my point. I meant if I wanted to hear new things, which I always do, I wouldn't go to Blackpool and wait for someone to slip an underplayed record into an oldies spot, I'd go to an upfront night where the underplayed is the norm.

For example, Top of the Stairs room at Gloucester on Saturday.

To answer your question, what would I play to shake things up? Maybe this.

Every record label has to use a pressing plant so I don't get that comment.
It's a custom label, like Oak here in the UK, where people could record demos and put them out.

Too many promoters just don't care, all they see is a fiver or tenner etc going in the tin. How many of these employ security which is required by law as far as I know? I've been to many nights wi no security at all.

    Time memberships were brought back.

Probably because some people think its quantity v quality . Numbers on the clicker help when your posting feedback about how much of a success the night was ...and hey ho ,the camera doesn't lie when your posting pics of how rammed it was

It can take years for a record to eventually make it "big" nationwide or shall I say gain exposure to a wider audience. One of the records you mentioned which you claimed to be a Burnley sound and not an oldie was played many years before by at least two other Dj's and in that respect is a bit of an oldie and was widely known by those who attended the 100 Club, Lifeline and other venues the two said Dj's appeared.

Was it Cliff who played it at Burnley? He no doubt, knowing Cliff, had it tucked away for years before giving it turntable action. This and the fact it is an obscure and tough to find record make it hard to gain wider exposure on the scene. Butch's Parliaments another example. It wasn't until the likes of Sam and Mick got copies and played it up an down the country that it broke nationwide,I could give other examples but it would be pointless.

As for who cares who played what first, many do, I for one like to see respect and credit where it is due. As for playlists most no longer post them not just because they get picked apart but because all the lazy sods then go and hoover up the records listed that said Dj has worked hard to find, put the hours in, if they wanna know what a DJ plays go out and listen to them.

Guess that would depend if it's a bootleg v a legitimate re-issue. Imagine what would happen if someone played a bootleg of a re-issue. Do two negatives make a positive?

Hi I am wondering if anyone has any info on this 45 that I found while sorting through 45s in Cleveland.  I can't find any info on it online.  I posted both sides on youtube a few months ago.  I contacted one of the members and he was ecstatic that I had posted it online.  He was surprised that I had found a copy since very few were pressed.  He stated that this was the only music they released and were poised to be signed to a major label but it all fell through because of poor management.  Any info would be appreciated!

The single in question was originally sold for £10 although when it got downn to around 10 copies left some sold for £15/20 but i believe this was down to the willingness of the people buying the record to give a little more to charity.

That's fine, and fair play to them (and the effect they have on the market ... increasing demand for certain tunes).

In the north east of England, however, there are far too many playing boots rather than originals (even at the cheaper end), so I wish there were more 'genuine' collectors dominating the decks. The bootleg Billys out there are probably distorting the market for reissues in the same way - just look at the £100+ that the Duke Browner recently went for, as one such example.

Ultimately, there will be good days and bad days with selling prices. There is no set value, just guide prices with adaptations for trends in demand and the application of experience; plus the odd freak result either up (nice result for the seller), or down (a bargain!).

I'm not so sure than JM would pay VAT at the point of sale. Maybe it's only on his commission of 20% which is also never factored into sales by people using a guide.

    Remove

    20% commission
    20% VAT
10/15% per drop in each level of condition

and there you have it. Most offers I put in nowadays are around this level. Much to some sellers chagrin I have to say.  "But I paid more than that for it!".....well Matey..."you paid too much!"   Of course this strategy only works for people who are in the collecting game for the duration and long haul, as we can sit back and wait until that right copy at the right price comes along. If you're a returnee DJ whose desperate to play what that guy in the next town's playing then...get your plastic out. As more than a few have discovered. God Bless 'em

There's obviously a number of different categories of record buyers nowadays. Some feed the dealer market and use that environment to source their 45s and some don't. The dynamics of collecting have completely changed with the advent of the internet and then the guides. Just the way it is.  The ONE factor that people continually choose to ignore, maybe because they don't want to identify themselves with it, is the market of the Saturday Night working men's club "DJs". They drive the market, they pay these prices, they are at the heart of the escalating prices.  Buying a 45 at just below "book price" and assuming you got a bargain is nuts. Then after thrashing your once nice styrene copies to death for a year for 50 of your Mates at your venue and then adding 25% on to it whilst attempting to sell them on is even nuttier!

I've no doubt that as the dynamics and demographics change once again that all those classic 45s I decided to gamble with and sold over the past decade or so at twenty/thirty times what I paid for them will undoubtedly find their way home at some stage at prices similar to what I originally paid. That's my theory anyway.
