So I'd say nah, best if we keep things as per below
I agree with Mike here - I have very strong political views but try to keep it all separate to the soul scene as it can lead to so many arguments & fall outs. Sometimes I have to bite my tongue so bloody hard it hurts!

I don’t know any A list dj using a laptop at venues, maybe at some divvy club? Mp3s have never been welcomed whilst I have been going, it has always been about the bit of plastic, even if that is a boot or carver.

Sad news indeed. RIP Jimmy & thank you for the music. xx

I'm very much a live and let live kinda bloke on many things in society in general , plenty of things get my goat that I think why would you want to do that.
Back to the point in question, I don't get out much anymore, pre covid I watched a mate and his group of friends dancing in a circle, arms waving in the air ,I hesitate to call it dancing to Petula Clark so a double whammy there, I just thought what is it coming to, no!! no!! no!!. Bear in mind this was a group of people with history on the scene not johhny come lately's . When i questioned him he said as you have said above "it was just a bit of fun".
I've read many threads on here regarding lets say the dumbing down of the scene, be it Tv exposure, the proms, baggy trousers etc and there seems to be a split between a hardcore group of people who up vote anything defending the scene as was and rarely see any other point of view, nothing wrong in that , I admire their undoubted devotion to scene they've lived their life on, on the other hand you have the more relaxed attitude where people don't get too hot under the collar about it, both sides I feel have the right to express their view. What I do find annoying is what I sometimes see as those defending the scene of old belittling those with a different view when those people it seems to me have just as much love and knowledge for and of the scene through time spent.
I guess it's something that is not going to go away, something we are going to have to live with. I don't like it, personally don't think it has a place , it would appear more people as they get older and can't dance as once they did are maybe looking for alternative ways to enjoy the night, taking the scene less seriously.
Unfortunately the wider public's view of Northern Soul tends to be one taken from the media which always focus on the same aspects, vests, baggy trousers ,circle skirts and four or five tunes, I have got to the stage when someone asks me what music I enjoy I never say Northern Soul, I'll say 60's soul, rare soul, if they then mention NS I'll say yes and try to explain away the media view.
Just to be clear, I don't like it, don't think it has a place, I just shake my head and let them get on with it, I won't be losing any sleep over it, should I choose to venture out again given the choice I'd be at Ashton Ukranian Club as I used to do pre covid where the true scene I believe is still alive and thriving.
My thoughts exactly - couldn't have put it better!
It's becoming almost too embarrassing to say you like Northern now.....
Have to say I saw the video & thought WTF!!!!!

Series 2 of Blue Lights is every bit as good as the first series!
Also watching The Gone, on BBC iplayer. Based in New Zealand - it's good & well worth watching even if only for the scenery - it looks stunning!

Went to the Blue Orchid near Derby in Les Cokell's van. Les insisted we all took our 'keep awake additives' before we got there. It was bloody closed. Spent the night in a motorway service station being stared at by the motorway police. Enough to give you the horrors
.
Still, they were happy days.
I wouldn't have found it funny at the time but I can't help laughing now!

Hi , thanks for accepting me.
I started my soul travels at the Brazenose St , Twisted Wheel around 1964, then Whitworth St. but had many great time at the Plebs and Cellar 44 in Halifax and a few different soul venues including Burnley and Blackpool Meccas. anyone remember these spots from the 60s?
Be good to hear.,
My first all-nighter was at The Golden Disc in Keighley (aged 15 - my parents would have killed me if they'd known!) Also tried Blackpool Mecca, The Birdtrap, Lord Jim's, Plebs (Halifax) & String o' Beads (Bradford) but mostly it was The Wheel (Whitworth St) for me & then either The Blue Note or Top 20 on a Sunday morning - I was there pretty much every weekend without fail from 1966-1970. Fab times & I'd love to turn back the clock & do it all again!

Why don’t they/you just leave it alone, it isn’t meant for the proms, it is meant to be in an a club preferably underground.
My thoughts exactly!

I've just watched Doing Money on bbc iplayer - from 2018 I think, so not a new drama - but I've only just found it. A true story that makes for compulsive viewing - very well-acted but also extremely sad, disturbing & thought-provoking. Well worth watching.

He did a series called 'Lost Worlds' ,last year, one covered Detroit
Not bad, but a bit of a cover version, I remember the original 'Requiem for Detroit' is from 2010 which is worth checking out
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1572190/
I saw his Lost Worlds series - I've got friends who were in Detroit a couple of years ago & they said it was bad, but I didn't realize quite HOW bad until I saw Lost Worlds! Sad to see.

Is anyone watching Into The Congo with Ben Fogle? It's on Sunday nights on Channel 5 - I always find his programmes interesting & worth watching. He seems like one of life's nice guys!

Total Trust on iplayer, truly frightening documentary on how China uses and continues to increase its use of technology to monitor and control its people. CCTV taken to the extreme. I was left with mixed feelings about the civic pride aspect of the programme, it's one thing to monitor litter, parking etc but when again taken to the extreme it was rather worrying. I know a few people who would only be too happy to take on the power some of the people in the programme had in watching and reporting on their neighbours.
I'll have to look that one up - sounds interesting! Thank you
Just watched it - I've always known that the Chinese government were extremely controlling, but this is another level! Scary stuff - it's like 1984 on speed!

Has anyone been watching Breathtaking on ITV? It's a 3-part series (final episode tonight at 9pm) about the front-line health staff during the pandemic - well worth watching! It's a reminder of the difficult time the NHS staff had & the sacrifices they all made. I salute every single one of them.

Nice story ...
But honestly I'd have been mortified if my parents had ever suggested 'escorting' me out on a Friday/Saturday night at 18.
It was always a case of "Where you off to this weekend ... ?" , followed by "See you when you get back"...
Very different times back in the 70s/80s and I dare say before that.
Me too, but this lad was keen to go with his parents so I'm not knocking him for it! His parents are both into the soul scene so he'd grown up with it all - it was his choice. I think they gave him the confidence to come whereas he might not have on his own. I thought it was good to see them out together - happy in each other's company & all having a good time. Would never have happened when I was young.
My parents didn't often ask me where I was going - if they did I would have lied through my teeth! If they'd known the truth I would have had the crap beaten out of me & then grounded FOREVER!!

I would just like to share a little something that made my night on Friday.
I was at my usual soul night when a young lad came in with his parents. His Mum later told me that he'd been hassling them for years to let him go to a soul night, but his parents had told him he would have to wait until he was 18. Friday was his 18th birthday & where did he choose to celebrate it? You guessed it - with us at our soul do. What a nice lad he was too - thoroughly enjoyed himself - he danced & danced & danced - he never left the dance floor!
They were among the last to leave, so we had chance for a quick chat with him & his parents - lovely people & really nice lad. Such a refreshing change to some of the cocky, arrogant younger people that I keep hearing about on the soul scene recently - we could do with a few more like him!
Just thought I'd share that with you - not all the young ones on the soul scene are so full of themselves - just a few that give the rest of the younger ones a bad name.

Just watched episode 1 of "What Remains" on BBC iplayer. Decent 4-part drama with an excellent cast.
Would Soul Sam have dropped this?

I've got quite a wide taste in music but this just isn't my cuppa tea at all - sounds way too synthesized & repetitive for me.
