From the local feedback, this is looking quite popular!!

With 3 weeks to go, I’ve had a number of telephone calls from people asking to reserve places to ensure they get in.

I think it’s a combination of a Wolvo/West Mids/Cavendish get-together effect  AND lots of folks finishing work on the Friday (ready for Santa to deliver their Gold Vinyl copy of the Professionals fresh from the JM auction)!

It might be worth getting there early as capacity is about 200 ish.

Last time we arranged something along these lines we had a great turnout WITHOUT the X-Mas Factor.

Managed to secure my availability, due to my inability to get a job !!!

Spoke at length with Kev, haven't played along side the "bull terrier pup" since Ben's birthday years ago, and what can be said about Ernie, he has surpassed us all, not to mention the Quarry bonk slayers wit.

Think i will want to play my current faves rather than just the usual Cavendish thing, guess its success and me being remembered the  main man despite havin 4 /5 co promoters in the two periods.as well as of course our towns major part in the early modern scene, centered on Peps shop and the Laff on tues night,

We can i thik certainly be seen as major players over the years, me in the 80's, Ern n Kev manor ward arms cross keys etc, carl is just a collector who used to have the same taste as me and we bounced off that together, but he had 20 years of buying, and the means to when i was awol(from records only) and then theres Mr Bodley, school  disco was his first listen we did our trial, and early apprentiship in the scene together, and he just owns good music....sounds good to me

I cant from experience accuratley cover earlier, and intend to play in the spirit of the time, with a hope we can re ignite what was such a progressive and reknowned area for playing and breaking records, Sean and Chris Latham have started chipping away at that big wad of complacency we have, and lets hope we can also  do it to. In the end that will help venues like Walsall wood and Brereton,  who play great stuff but get less than they should attend, time to dip a toe in to the deep end, and onwards to smooth sailing!!.

With no understanding of the technology, all i can say is that my spot will be hot periods interspersed with hotter ones, , however a possibility of mighty clouds of joy, looks like rain maybe or touch in the dark, lets wait and see the mix on the night, you wont need an umbrella just your leather soles and a willingness to let your mind be re tuned to our soul pedigree, pity Pep , our mentor at different degrees per person couldnt have been with us, in terms of playing major venues and playing new tunes, he took to the next level  from Farmer Carl, Bob Crocker and Graham Warr 's valued contribution to the scene....maybe another time, we still have then John Ken Gary Holyman Neil Rushton John Weston and Ted who have the same pedigree, and still posses the desire to progress, despite living in a desert full of safe n comfy plays , i love em all  60's 70's 80's own almost all styles but its just that desire for stuff we dont know, we all start with it  its just what stop you get off at its time to get onboard and reap the benefits of soul, and that in 90% of the time is oldies, but ones that have been missed or shelved for the future, that crumbled into non existence

Don't want y'all to think i'm paranoid but according to my e:mail account i'm being followed.

Reminds me of when as a member of the Wolverhampton paranoid group we went to the Grand Theatre to the pantomime for a treat, it was great until someone shouted

"HE'S BEHIND YOU"

Mr Kilworth aka the drug thanks for your kind offer, but Sandi and i have a bigger collection of records than ever before, lots n lots of goodies to p[lay on the night, a few classics some x over the classier side of 60's soul (mid tempo plus detroit 'n' chicago) and no doubt being me a smattering of modern n 70's, well thats my 4 hours sorted out ,don't know 'bout the others........ lol

My play list on face book for walsall wood in october is very much where i'm at musically right now, might give you an idea what sort of stuff you might hear!

see you a "wik a friday" as we say "round by we"

We should be able to post DJ times shortly, Just need to confirm a few details with the venue in respect of times etc. as there is something which needs finalising. With the much appreciated help of Sean H (Burnley, Soul Function, etc...), we will be setting up the equipment during the afternoon.

For those who haven't been to this venue before,I'll give a brief outline.

As you enter the building, there is the bar/lounge area, This is a well lit area with seating, ideal for record sales and having a chat. The main room with dance floor is off this room, through double doors. The lighting can be turned right down VERY low to downright pitch black!! There is a proper, wooden dance floor and stage for DJs.

We hope to be able to use a projector to show a few pictures and video (yes VIDEO) from the Cavendish (Big thank you to Andrew).

Cheers

We'll be down early afternoon Kev I brake up on Thursday woo hoo schools out oh I can feel another song coming on there unfortunately not a Christmas song but it's very apt for me as I work in a school haha. Anyway Kev's also managed to get the day off so I'll be nagging him all morning to get ready and get on the M6, he has apparently sorted his records out today but he could change his mind before Friday. Looking forward to having a good get together with lots of great music big thanks to Sean and Andrew and also to the Pumping Hearts Soul Club for letting us use their venue for this reunion.

See you all Friday.

Really want to get down for this, but as the wife and I are both at work until 6-6.30 we wouldn't be there until just after 9pm... would hate to drive all the way just to find out we couldn't get in cos of a capacity crowd!

So, Kevs.... I'll message/ring one or both of you on the day if we're definitely gonna make it in the hope you save us a place!

Cheers!

DJ times will be along these lines, but with a little flexibility!!

Up until 10.30, Messrs Bodley and Spittle (sounds like a firm of Undertakers!)

10.30 to 11.30 Carl "The Collection" Jones

11.30 to 12.30 Dave "Block-Buster" Welding

12.30 to 1.30 Paul "Harpo" Harpin (their behind you!)

1.30 last bit The First lot again.

When we originally were fixed up with the venue, we understood that the finish times was 2am. However, the owners subsequeltly called us to say the "official" finish time was 1.30 am with a little flexibility to run over a "bit".

Hope to see lots of folks on the night, should be a "gud 'un" with something for all tastes (perhaps not Glam Rockers)

Cheers

Just had a phone call to let us know that someone (I won't name them) is spreading rumours that drinks are £6 a pint can I just confirm that we we're there a few weeks back at Pumping Hearts and they we're nowhere near that price maybe a little bit more expensive than your local but that's all. No idea what's wrong with these people at all I think they need to get a life anyway I won't let it spoil my night just wanted to make people aware that it's just a rumour.

We'll be leaving soon so if anyone needs any info or directions you can ring Kev S on 07870827062.

See you all later.

Just a few words following on from the night.

I’d like to thank all those who attended. There was a mix of local folk and lots who had travelled quite a distance to meet up with locals. I think everyone enjoyed the night. In particular, a massive thanks to Sean Haydon.

In my opinion, we catered for a wide range of tastes. I was happy to play for those who like to hear more established, familiar tunes. Kev S moved things up a gear with his excellent taste and knowledge.

Carl Jones really should be booked to play at far more venues. Excellent collection, good DJ, played a great mix of high end 60’s and 70’s tunes (on the mixcloud you can hear my comments after looking through his box — “Thanks, you’ve saved my a fortune, I’m going to give up collecting!”

Dave Welding, a more familiar DJ name to many, again, superb. A privilege to hear.

Harpo — Enthusiastic as ever, great taste, great music some of which was aimed more at those with a 70’s and beyond leaning. The one responsible for introducing me to this stuff at a school disco in about 1975/76.

Forget playlists, Kev S recorded the whole event and has done mixcloud thingy’s of each set. I would genuinely recommend that you have a listen to these. My first bit was just a random bit of messing about getting the equipment warmed up (the equipment tale is a whole separate little bit of excitement!)

All the best

Kev Bod.
