STOCKHOLM’S LONGEST-STANDING CLUB NIGHT ‘SOUL’ LAUNCHES IN LONDON MAY 2014
‘Soul’, a true staple of the Stockholm clubbing scene and the Swedish capital’s longest-running club night, celebrates its London launch on Sunday May 4th at Brixton Jamm, in collaboration with We, Like You and Funk & Soul Club.
GIZELLE SMITH and her nine piece band (LIVE)
Opening its doors to 500+ party people every single Saturday night for a jaw-dropping twenty years, Soul has become one of Stockholm’s best-loved nightspots and the finest place to groove the night away to 60s soul, funk, latin, R&B, northern soul, boogaloo, jazz, hammond grooves, modern soul, rare grooves and early disco on the Swedish club circuit.
Founders Fredrik Ekander, Robert Baum and Magnus Rams launched the club in September 1993, at Stockholm’s legendary jazz nightclub Fasching, where it still reigns supreme every Saturday night. Between they them have the most outstanding collection of 7” vinyl soul singles in Scandinavia.
Says Fredrik on the club’s imminent London launch, “I am very excited about finally bringing the Soul club to London and Brixton Jamm."
"In the eighties, Stockholm was a very dull and drab place. Especially if you were in to vintage black dance music like we were. So myself, Robert, Magnus and our friends used to take every chance we had to travel to London to experience the extremely exciting club scene over here. The music mix - and people - at a place like Twist & Shout at The Camden Palace on a Saturday night for instance, just blew us away! A packed floor with a completely diverse crowd dancing passionately to all kinds of fantastic sixties dance music...well, it just changed our lifes forever."
Ekander, Baum and Magnus and many of their peers brought their renewed and refined passion for all things SOUL back to Sweden to start their own clubs in and around the capital. Actually the first ever northern soul allnighter outside the UK, might actually have been held at Fridhemsplan in Stockholm in 1982 organised by well renowned Swedish music journalist Andres Lokko and his mates.
Over the years they kept coming back to the London scene for more soul, more great times and more inspiration. Eventually they also started bringing 60's and 70's soul DJ'S and artists to enrich their Stockholm club nights.
"The club scene over here in the UK has been so groundbreaking in many ways", says Fredrik. "For 60's and 70's black music in particular. You obviously have all the sixties/mod/soul/ northern allnighters and weekends that we Swedes and other continental soul fans have been treeking to up and down the country for thirty years now. But also here in London. From the fantastic Twist & Shout in Camden, Sneakers and the mod clubs of the eighties and of course the northern soul allnighters at the 100 Club. Jazz at Dingwalls on Sundays, funk at Madame JoJo's on Fridays, Bass Clef/Blue Note and the whole acid jazz scene in the nineties, blue beat at Gaz' Rocking Blues and the New Untouchables impeccable 60's sets, the Ham Yard, Blues Kitchen, Jazz Café, Ronnie Scotts' and obviously Craig Charles' Funk And Soul Club. London is simply the most influential nightclub music capital of the world!"
These long time purveyours of all things SOUL now hope that they will be able to add their night of SOUL at Brixton Jamm to this long list of legendary London club nights; that their carefully selected mix of rhythm and blues, 6T’s and Northern Soul on one dancefloor and 70’s soul, funk and early disco on the other will please the Brixton Jamm crowd enough to make for an absolutely fantastic first night of Soul in South London on May 4th.”
The DJ-lineup consists of no less than seven DJ's spread over to floors. Alongside SOUL's three resident DJ's flying in from Sweden, the UK names are:
DEAN RUDLAND - Longtime DJ and soul record collector. Dean is co-founder of Acid Jazz Records and also a veteran album compiler and consultant to the major record labels on how to repackage their vast back-catalogues of soul, funk, jazz and latin.
ANDY LEWIS - Not only a prominent DJ on the sixties/mod/soul-scene, but also an artist with several albums under his belt. Besides his passion for 7" vinyl, Andy is also the bass player in Paul Weller's band. Expect great sixties sounds and soulful dance grooves.
STEVE CATO - An amazing northern soul dancer in his own right, Steve knows exactly what's needed to satisfy a demanding dancefloor. Funk and northern soul is his specialty and he'll be representing the North, coming down from Manchester for the evening.
CHRIS DALE - Resident DJ with the mighty modernist organisation that is The New Untouchables, which has been organising the most amazing 60's styled nightclubs, weekends and festivals in the UK and around the world for many years now.
To add further to this Soul spectacular, there will be a fantastic live act performing.
The up and coming funk/soul princess GIZELLE SMITH will perform a stunning live set WITH HER NINE PIECE BAND, songs from her debut album along with a few covers + new compositions from her forthcoming album.
Count on a large Swedish contingency of clubbers to turn up for the night - both expats living in London along with the hardcore elite of the Stockholm SOUL party crowd flying in just for the night. Together with their UK counterparts from across the country these dedicated soul fans are ready to dance til the morning comes...
