For some reason I'd never been to the Rugby nighter, not sure why, it's been going for years so should have visited it but finally made up for my tardiness. Suzy my good friend from the 100 Club has been telling me for ages to go so finally at the last minute almost I made my mind up and got my train tickets. I asked on Facebook about getting from the station to the venue and plenty of people helpfully replied.

I travelled up to Euston, got a train that only took just over an hour, hopped in a taxi and was there by just gone 9.35. Walked in to the sound of If It's All The Same To You Babe followed by Don't Wanna Cry by Pearlean Grey setting the mood for a night of classy music. I joined my friends from the 100 Club near the front and found that when I went to the bar I could hardly turn around without bumping into someone I knew including some I'd not seen for ages.

I can't do the usual DJ by DJ report as I wasn't sure who was on the decks at some times and I did move between the main room and the smaller freestyle room.

In the main room Coops did a set based around the Cleethorpes Pier or so I was told by friends who used to go there and ended up with their ender record, think it's called It's All Over but I'm sure someone will correct me.

Pat Bleasdale set started at 2 am, I didn't know her first few plays, some slightly funky, think one may have been the Four Voices' We Live In The Ghetto. She went back to more conventional mode with Sha La La (my request, thanks for playing it), It's All Over Baby, Heartaches And Pain, and Moving On A Groove. Nice to hear a top DJ playing a cheap record, I presume it is still cheap, must be because I've got it.

I popped in and out of the freestyle room and thought that Calvin did an excellent set including the Stratoliners among others. For the final set in that room ending at 5 am Tom Page did a set of mainly medium tempo tunes that were pretty well known but it went down extremely well, tunes like Love's No Longer Got A Hold On Me, The Love I Lost, You're Gonna Love My Baby, You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine, Just Walk In My Shoes, and ending with Dionne Warwick's sublime Walk On By. Just because a record is well known and has been a hit is no reason not to play it.

Then back in the main room Backdoor Kenny was just starting and played a good set with plenty of tunes I didn't immediately recognise: Garland Green's Come Through Me, Emanuel Lasky's I'm A Peace Loving Man, etc.

For the last three records of the night Dave Rimmer took over and played the Fantastic Four's Can't Stop Looking For My Baby, Johnnie Joe Matthews' I Have No Choice and finally The Drifter by Ray Pollard. This is a tradition at the Rugby Nighter, similar to Baby I Need Your Loving at the close of play at the 100 Club.

Sorry I've not given name checks to all the DJs, wasn't sure who you all were and frankly it's not easy to remember things when you sit down at the computer. There was a real mix of music, something for all soul lovers I'd think. Thanks for the great music.

Great to see so many of my soul friends, first time for a while I've seen Kylee, certainly blooming I think is the description. A very friendly crowd.

After the night finished Dave Trigger (Sian) kindly invited me and others to hear house to relax and chill out before the journey home, very kind, some great music played while we relaxed. I got chatting to a Swedish guy Sebastian and we travelled back to London together.

I definitely want to return to Rugby and will put it on my calendar. However I need a break, had three weekends when I've attended an allnighter and the weekend before was Spirit. Feeling a bit tired now. A little rest required.

My first visit. What is the dance floor like? Hopefully a bit more give in it than the 100 Club, that wrecks my legs.

Omg, I knew I was shattered after Saturday but I have been in bed & mostly slept for 20 out of the last 24 hours. I couldn't write a proper thank you and review on my phone but I'm back now 1f603.png

We had our highest ever numbers for the anniversary, so you just don't know at the following event. It was also a lovely day which to the allniter world means you have a few drinks in the day & can't make the night 1f603.png

Idell & I were so organised with the door set up that we sat outside on the wall, in the warmth, waiting for our first guests to arrive at 7.10pm 1f603.png:-D Yes, we open at 8pm but this is part of Rugby now. 1f642.png

We had a good, steady flow of people and a few times, I was even able to say "no pushing at the back" 1f609.png I think a very good attendance was achieved.

So, now to the important part, the thank yous. The punters, I put first because how ever amazing the DJs are, without the punters, we would be nothing.
The DJs, although second in line, pull in the punters, so without them, we would also be nothing... Kenneth, Dave & Phil, our amazing residents. Tom, our resident in waiting (Dave understands the joke). David Abbott, Mark Bicknell, Pat Bleasdale, Mick Cooper, Dazz Dakin, Nerrad Nikad, Calvin Lee Hughes, Wayne Napier-Gibbins, Kris Sikora, Rob Smith, Jordan Wilson & Billy Whizz.
Last but by no means least, my fabulous door staff, Idell, Carol & Michael Tabs.

If the DJs would like to post their playlists, please do so. Or even a taster of what they played 1f642.png

68 sleeps til our June swoon on 17th June. Hopefully I will have recovered by then 1f603.png
