Sweet, Deep and Soulful on

Event Information

PLEASE NOTE :- THIS IS NOT A NORTHERN SOUL EVENT

Ladies and Gentlemen, we are proud to announce the next instalment of Sweet, Deep and Soulful, focusing exclusively on the rarer (and not so rare) side of Sweet Soul, Deep Soul and Mid-tempo Soul. The inception of our event proved to be a great success, lots of very positive feedback and enquiries as to when we planned the next one. The management of our fantastic venue also inviting us to stage our day on a more regular basis.

We will be having a Soul drenched afternoon and evening consisting of the very best in rare Sweet, Deep and mid-tempo Soul, no more confinement to a couple of hours in a side room, ladies and gentlemen, its the main event, commencing at 2pm and finishing at midnight for the princely tax of £5

Joining resident spinners, Pete Foster, Gaz Simon and Kev Cane at the decks will be:- Jakob Iller from Antwerp Belgium and Yarmouth's finest, Andy Etheridge  Chris "Huggy" Huggins and from the hotbed of Sweet and Deep Soul collecting, Anthony "Akro" Perez from San Jose, North California.

Jakob has featured at the "Not too young" Swiss Weekender, "Soul'd Up" Berlin, "Wonderful to be loved" Niter in Brussels and the "Sweet" Aldayer in Gent.

Andy and Chris are renowned Sweet Soul and Deep Soul collectors with very expansive knowledge of the subject matter, both regularly starring in the much heralded "Jim Wray Lounge" at The Essence Weekender

Anthony has been collected Sweet and Deep Soul for many years, he has featured on Vic Vasquez's Gangster Dedications radio show which goes out fortnightly in the States.

Our venue, The Head Of Steam is in the City centre of beautiful historic Durham City. It has a wealth of Hotels and B&B's and is on the London-Edinburgh main line. Not being satisfied with serving up the best in Soul music we are making sure the beer is to the connoisseur's taste, The Head Of Steam specialise in imported worldwide Beer, Craft Beer, Lager and Cider aswell as the best in locally produced Beers etc. The food is lovely and plentiful. We are situated upstairs in the Function room complete with balcony overlooking the lively and characteristic courtyard. It doesn't get any better.

We are once again restricted to a capacity of 125 Soul lovers. As a consequence, once again we are having to monitor this by implementing a ticket reservation policy.

Do not miss out, we had around 100 in last time. For your ticket (to be paid for and collected on arrival and then crossed from list) please PM me or respond on our Facebook advert on the North East Soul Events page. Please please, if you reserve and then find you can't attend, please let me know, no problem, once its full, it will be closed, it's strictly 125. TICKETS FOR A 10 HOUR SOUL SESSION ARE £5

SEE YOU ON MARCH 11TH

Missed the 1st one, felt privileged  to be at the 2nd. Nothing but admiration for the promoters and djs, with a policy of 'sweet soul, deep soul and mid tempo soul'  - it certainly was in bucket fulls. Factor in a wonderful venue (hard to better for this type of event) and great crowd,  this was something special and most enjoyable. Equally impressive, the djs themselves who dug deep into their collections. Fabulous tunes - many new to me !

The venue itself is a delight,  tucked away right in the centre of Durham in a historic yard - a bit of a secret locally, above the Head of Steam, with its own upstairs bar, wooden floor in front of the decks, nice seating - sofas, coffee tables etc, outside terrace/balcony albeit this time teaming with rain. As for the Head of Steam - tasty food and an amazing array of local ales, world craft beers, lagers, ciders, wine etc, passionate and helpful staff.
Quite an afternoon /evening before we had to leave, earlier than we had wished, to catch the train.
Can see this event in future being essential for many on here and deservedly so.

I want to repeat my post on this topic here for the sake of giving it 5 stars.

What an amazing night. Having driven down from Livingston I got there later than I had planned but despite this I was treated to some utterly mind blowing tunes and a very warm welcome The venue is spot on, intimate and perfect for this kind of event. I went back to my hotel RAVING to my rather un-interested wife about what we'd just heard.

It's such a shame that quality nights like this catering for such a fantastic genre of Soul music are so few and far between but here's hoping Deep, Sweet and Soulful goes from strength to strength. I will definitely be back.

I have to agree with Andy Bellwood's review that this event will (and deservedly so) become an essential on the Soul Calendar.

As the sign says VERY Right this way.

SUPERB!

Quick update and amendment, we are very proud to announce that renowned Sweet Soul collector Anthony "Akro" Perez is joining us all the way from San Jose California, Anthony was planning a visit to Manchester and has planned it around "Sweet, Deep and Soulful" so he can "connect with the soul brothers out there and sip that ale you fellas drinking on all the time" Anthony of course will be playing a set, so come on, lets show him a great UK soulful welcome. Will be a fantastic Soulful occasion represented by the UK, mainland Europe and now California US, it can't get any better than that

Blimey where's that time gone since the first one of these last September?! Working on making it up the A1 with a few of us again. Was a great day/night. Still glance back at those playlists (wants lists!) now and then. Cheers, Steve

Great to see you Sunday John, and it will be great if you can make The Head of Steam, March 11th.

as Kev says numbers are shaping up nicely, if anyone else fancies coming, let Kev know.

the head of steam is 5 mins walk from Durham train station and directly across the road from the main bus station.

Durham isn't really a car friendly city so if coming by car the train station car park or riverside multi storey are your best bets.

really looking forward to 'sweet, deep and soulful,

Gaz

On countdown now, this has come around real quick, as Gaz says, Head of Steam is 5 mins away from bus and train stations, thanks to everyone who has messaged me, great response again, I personally can't wait to hear what Pete, Gaz, Chis, Andy, Anthony and Jakob are going to play because hand on heart I haven't a clue what they are going to, such is the beauty of having a day dedicated to Soul that isn't dictated to by a dancefloor, the guys are under no pressure and have complete creative rights, (as long as it's mega soulful:thumbsup:) So Soul fans, see y'all there

Best of luck to you this Sat.

A tip for those staying overnight: myself + Jens Chreisti and Pete Shirley (the Stockholm weekender trio) are playing alongside Steve Wagstaff, Terry Wright, Dean Roach and Bob Snow at Soul Not Dole on Sunday the 12th. It's not far from Durham (or so I'm told), would be great to meet some people from here.

(We're playing in Doncaster on the Saturday as well, otherwise we would have come to SD&S!)
