  1. Having worked in the shop for many years I became very close to you both. We didn't part on the greatest of terms, however, both of you were a very big part of my life for many years, particularly those early years spent married to Tess, and I will treasure that time I spent with you very dearly. Helen was always your rock and I know you will miss her greatly. My heart goes out to you Ian please try and stay strong. Tim Everett XX
  2. Dare I even mention that Amen Corner that a rather good version... yeah I know it's not a female... but he did have long hair!
  3. Wigan really was my era, so I do tend to put on the rose tinted specks a bit... well quite a lot if the truth is known. At one period I didn't miss an all nighter for over four years... Friday and Saturday's. Being youngsters, the oldies night held a real fascination for me as I was too young for the Torch, Cats and Va Va, so it was a real education, nevertheless, it was Saturday night that was the big one. Hearing not just Richard play new records but all the DJs play new records was always exciting. There was most definitely a place for Beverley Anne, Judith Durham, Holly St. James, Outsiders (Lonely Man) et al... and I will remember the pop/soul with found memories... but I can't be sure records such as the awful Seeds psych babble, Tim Tam or Joe 90 were ever really needed, warranted or indeed wanted. One thing that always annoys me when Wigan is spoken about; is Richards part in it. Again, I think too many people don those rose tinted spec's... sure he played some great records, but also played some real stinkers... Russ, Allan, Pep, Pat Brady, Soul Sam and Keith Minshall all played an integral part of the make up of the Casino and this diversity of DJ talent made it the place to be. (Sorry Wigan DJs if I missed your name in the role call... its getting late...) Favourite records include Johnny Henly (another forgotten gem), Frank Lyndon, Freddie Chavez, The Delights, Lester Tipton, New Wanderers, Eddie Foster and hearing Bobby Paris Night Owl the first time at the oldies nighter.... oooohhhh shivers
  4. Ooop's the Invitations was a mistake.... however, they had a little played version of the Belmonts track which I really liked on MGM. The list is really just from memory. Many of the tracks, particularly from the middle period of Wigan, may have only been played for a few weeks... and dropped from play-lists because of the bootlegs. The Nikki Blue track is a prime example. I still really like this and have dug it out recently and played it... it still sounds good to me and may do well as a re-activated oldie. I'm sure it is a lot rarer than the book price. Diane Newby's version of the Cooperettes / Chubby Checker track is still the one to have and another that could do well. There are also a few others that were dropped because large quantities of the track were found... E.J Chandler... a good a record as anything ever played at Station Road. Jimmy Smiley is another that turned up quickly... and was legitimately re-issued in the states on Camille... however, these turn up a lot less often than the Gait original. It's easy to look back now and target records such as Grand Piano Company and Harry Betts as pure pop, but are they any worse as some of the more treasured instrumentals? Don't forget the reaction from the crowd when things like this were played.. they almost blew the roof off. We were naive kids but we knew what we liked... 30 years on and much wiser, but do we have to crap on the records we liked then because they are out of favour now? The raw energy in tracks like Manifesto and the power and gusto of James Coit... unforgettable. Are these not soul records... I would argue they most definitely were and are well worth another spin. As is the Leon Thomas track... a superb 70's track that was unforgivably underplayed. Rambling now... so much to say and so little time... Tim

  6. Perhaps I just got a bit confusedin the hype surrounding the books release. I was expecting a warts and all analysis ofthe Casino, possibly one or two interviews with key individuals or with regularpunters. What we got was a book chroniclingand reviewing the most important records in this 1973 - 1981 period; records Iknow very well and didn't really need reminding of or telling how rare, good orcrap they actually are. I'm not sure if Mr Brown and Iattended the same club - some of his record choices are at bestquestionable. Whatever your own opinionof the tracks that he has listed, it questions why a book touted as the definitiveWigan Casino story is no more that a subjective view of a few records... and verysubjective these reviews are too. Whenreviewing anything it should be up to the reader/listener to make up theiropinion and not that of the author... a good way of alienating readers I'm sure. Mr Brown was very keen to pointout, on several occasions, of the shortcomings of Blues and Soul scribe FrankElson and the DJing prowess of Russ Winstanley... again why? The book is written well and readswell. The layout is good with lots ofadverts pulled from various music mags of the period. There is also an overview of a few specialistrecord labels of the time, but again no interviews... It leaves the readersomewhat short of information. Mr Brown mentions the changing DJline-up and again fails to have any quotes and/or interviews - just names...again I feel a bit short changed. Why didPep leave the Casino for Cleethorpes... these questions needed to be answered? I was amused by someone'sreference to a Beano annual... spot on. The front cover is very poor and is saved somewhat by a good backcover. No prizes for graphics here. Overall the book was disappointing...as I previously mentioned the book was written well and reads well, however, itleft me with far too many unanswered questions and wondering why the authordevoted so much space to anarchic record reviews.
  7. The ideals behind the A La Carte CDs were quoted earlier in this discussion. Great care was taken to stay away from records associated with the legitimate labels, hence the quote above... This, again as I said earlier, is no justification or excuse. I made very little money from the exercise, and probably, if the truth be known... actually lost money. I still get a big kick from hearing new records, and tried and succeeded to stay away from the tried and trusted sounds and dug a little deeper into the achieves of the music to supply tracks that were forgotten or lost completely; whereas companies like Right Track openly compile CDs that both contain other companies released product and charge unrealistic prices for their content... albeit they come complete with glossy sleeves!!!! I also notice that the Keighley CDs still being advertised along with a multitude of other scooter compilations from a variety of sources... so why did A La Carte take all the negative flak? Take a look at the 45s for sale on e-bay... are these very dubious looking records on looky-likey labels legal? Is there any justification in charging £14 for a reissue single... does the artist/label/writer benefit...I doubt it very much. So how do these professionally made and distributed records escape the wrath of the northern soul police? If indeed these records are of a dubious nature, than there is a much bigger story than the one behind the guy who makes CDs in his study! Tim
  8. If these collections have caused offence then please accept my most sincere apologies. My intentions were never to deceive... and if they did... all I can do is repeat my apology. A La Carte

  10. Dear all A La Carte CDs were compiled with a lot of thought and tried to never impede any UK licensed product. The main purpose of compiling these discs, if anyone has seen them, was to promote the hidden gems that never got played... the thousands of perfectly good records that get ignored because they're not rare, not collectable or out of fashion with the overlords of the scene. Have a look at the file-sharing sites like Filetopia or DC++ and look through the tens of thousands of CDs that are posted to download free-of-charge... how many people on here use these sites rather than pay for legitimate copies of CDs? I am a soul fan and have been for a great number of years and would like to consider myself reasonably knowledgeable about the music, however, it does make me sad to see the dual-standards that people live by. It's apparently ok to download free music from the above sites and ok to give away free CDs at venues or stuck to magazines but not to advertise neglected and unobtainable music from e-bay... how many sellers are currently selling dubious 45s on E-bay?... Has this been raised on this forum... how much money from these 45s makes it way back to the label/artist/owners? I bet nil. What about the counterfeit 45s? The CDs pertaining to be legit from Jamaica or Belgium? Each CD on E-Bay sold, at the very most between 10 and 15 copies.... The profit to me was absolutely minimal. Any suggestions that I did this for a luxury lifestyle are well off the mark... £3.49 each including P&P... eBay and PayPal fees... If I made 10p per copy that would be a lot! I am not trying to justify why I did it... and if people, particularly those who release CD product are pissed off... then please be rest assured that no more A La Carte CDs will be made. There are currently no CDs available and non will be in the future. The vast majority of tracks used had never been issued before anywhere in the world, which may, hopefully have encouraged collectors to seek out the original source. Selling the odd CD... is this any worse than respected dealers selling second hand copies of the original disc or even worse selling copious amounts of dubious re-issue or bootleg singles.. I don't think so. A La Carte
