  1. Got to agree. Thank God, there wasn’t as much talc as last year. The floor is great for gliding around on (saves my 66 year old knees!). Here’s to next October.
  2. I think the other record shop in Oasis was called Soul Galore. Who was the young lady who worked at Graham Warr's mid 70's? Stunner. Couple of shops on the Bristol Road in Selly Oak were great for penniless students. Funky Dunc's was one - soul and disco loving gay. Can't remember the name of the other to save my life but he had a huge box of imports that were about 30p a shot.
  3. Just the one from me. Hits the spot... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxsx7UQu3rY
  4. Dave and Ansel Collins - Double Barrel. Certainly gets the approval of 'those of a certain age'
  5. I'm naive. I go to nighters. I dance. I don't go anywhere near the DJ's. Am I supposed to peep over their shoulder + check that every sound is on original release vinyl? I want a good night. Get real.
  6. I'm more of a lurker on SS than a regular contributor as my evidenced by my number of postings. Don't really take exception to much that's posted - varied opinions because we're all pretty varied folk. I do take exception to a conceited individual like Nick who determines what is a cool style of dance and what is 'div dancing'. I see dancers who I think are better than me and I see dancers who I think are worse than me. Does it bother me? Does it fcuk! Are they enjoying themselves? Am I enjoying myself? Does their manner of dance impinge on me and my enjoyment of the niter? The answers should be self-evident. Live and let live. Sad bugger (Nick, that is)
  7. Thursdays only for 'Grab-a-Grannie'. I did hear a repeat and can't for the life of me remember it now (or even 5 minutes later). Doesn't matter because sometimes you welcome a second outing of a bit of class. What's the chance of inviting Ian (TNT) Turner for a spot? He was a bit of a resident there as I remember.
  8. Wasn't sure what to expect for a first niter at an old venue. My Northern outings have been limited to Kings Hall niters of recent but enjoyed the last one so much, had to have another fix! Had a quick pint in the Museum, Newcastle and got there about 1030 to find plenty in already. Joined in on the dance floor which was kept busy by the DJ's. The place filled up - approx 200? which created a happy atmosphere. Unashamed oldies - no egos playing their floor emptiers. I ran out of steam about 0400 and crashed out round the corner at a mates house. Everyone to their own but crossover and modern (with very few exceptions) just doesn't do it for me - seems like a fair few think the same. Venue is a lot better inside than the exterior would suggest and the dance floor didn't really need the help of the Johnsons Baby Powder!
  9. I don't usually spend time dwelling on how the Kings Hall went - I just enjoy, go home and recover. This time, I feel I ought to make a couple of points as I saw it. The second room needs a dance floor. The temporary ones that have been used before are far from perfect but I do think it holds back the enjoyment if you're trying to dance on your lounge carpet. I got up and danced a couple of times in there but it never got going although there were a fair few sat / stood round almost willing it to take off. (I did like the bowls of sweets on the tables!) Great to see the young lad in the blue shirt and bags (I'd guess14 yrs old?) enjoying his dancing in the main room. Another couple of thousand of his mates and the scene will still be going in 40 years time. Final point: I enjoy having a pint in the White Star before and more Strongbow at the KH. Why do some prats (particularly one obese idiot in a pink T shirt) get legless and think its a laugh to go on the floor in barefeet, slopping ale everywhere and generally acting / looking like a cnut? His mates should do the decent thing and get a grip of him. The men in black seem highly visible when everything's ticking over nicely but a quiet word could also have put a check on his hilarious antics. I'll be at the next one.
  10. I love watching the footage of 60's / 70's soul singers and groups that plays on the screen in the main room at Kings Hall. Only problem is, you can't hear the bloody music. Put that in the second room, get some armchairs, where I can get myself together (song there somewhere) before entering the fray again. Might want to provide waitress service, comfy slippers and a glass of port. Failing that, underplayed oldies will do me.
  11. Hi Spook, Think I remember chatting to you when you were running a night at The Wayfarer, Stone - must be 10 years plus ago. Where are you outside Eccy? I'm @ Fairoak, just off the Loggerheads Rd. Guess you've got an Audi TT - have to come and have a play with my motor.
  12. Looking for a photo of a mate who died 3 weeks ago and found these from Shropshire.
  13. Lived at Priorslee from 84 til about 90. Anyone remember the monthly nites at Shifnal Village Hall? Still got my 'Catch a Groove' membership. Looking back through the topic, might have been run by Ian Carvell. Also used to got some of Esher's nites, including a Niter at the Court Centre, Madeley - was it the 84 / 86 Club? Think he also did a brilliant night at a village hall nearer Stourbridge - Worston?? There were also nites down at a pub in Ironbridge - think it was the Malthouse.
