  • A brief intro...
I was introduced to the northern scene aged 16 at my first scooter rally in 1983 with ex-Wigan DJs playing at the all-nighters and have been collecting records ever since. I enjoy rare and underplayed events and am co-promoter of Feed Your Soul chillout at Newark and Creme de la Creme chillout at Annesley Woodhouse, both of which are free-to-public events.  (It's not about making money, it's about sharing the passion)

  1. For over 100 years now Detroit has been a hotbed of musical talent with over 1500 labels operating alongside each other, issuing music from the Motor City alone Having shown an interest in the art of recording at a very young age, by the time he was 12 years old Gary Rubin had built a recording facility in his family's basement which grew to become Pioneer Recordings, a studio at the cutting edge of technology in the heart of Detroit. Here Gary gives a candid account of life in the industry including sharing a studio with Lou Rawls, being raided by the FBI in search of gangsters, moonlighting Motown musicians, to being at the wrong end of a handgun for the sake of some stringed instruments! Unfortunately the audio files are too large to upload here so please visit www.shinyl.co.uk/gary-rubin-detroit-label-owner-producer-recording-engineer gary rubinshinyl p1.mp3
  2. You know that thing where you're singing in a club and some chap comes up afterwards and says 'come with me to LA and i'll make you a star?' Judy Street took the guy at his word and found herself in the studio with the legendary H.B. Barnum and the iconic northern soul song What was born. You can hear Judy's story here, and did i mention she's still recording?
  3. Thanks to Alan Johnston for putting me in touch with the lovely lady that is Elsie Gray, original member of the Debonaires who gave me an insight into her singing career initially as part of the Sterophonics aged just 14 years and then alongside Dot Garland, Joyce Vincent and latterly Diane Hopkins as The Debonaires. Elsie and i chatted about her life in music, within (and outside) Golden World in 60s Detroit and beyond. You can hear our conversation here
  4. We regret to learn of the sad passing of Bonnie on 8th June 2020 and of Anita on 31st December 2022 The Pointer Sisters achieved mainstream success during the 1970s and 1980s. Their career spanned four decades and their repertoire has included such diverse genres as pop, disco, jazz, blues, soul, funk, country and dance. The Pointer Sisters have won three Grammy awards and received a star on the Hollywood Hall Of Fame in 1994. The group had 13 US top 20 hits between 1973 and 1985 The group had its origins when sisters June and Bonnie Pointer began performing in clubs in 1969 as Pointers, A Pair. The line-up grew to a trio when sister Anita joined them. They then got a record deal with Atlantic records and released several singles. The trio grew to a quartet when sister Ruth joined in 1972. 1659285066_PointerSisters64.mp3
