  1. Taylorette groupies will be in attendance
Mark & Kim always put on a good night, however this was exceptional. Tired and jaded from a week with the lurgy and a late finish at work, I laced up my brogues somewhat wearily and headed for the Co-Op, hoping to make it to the end of Brian Rae's set at 2am. Sadly I missed the opening set, but Rob Gray had the floor busy with some monster plays as soon as I arrived and it just kept going without any let up. Ally Mayer, Mark Freeman, Mick Taylor, Brian Rae, Ian Wills, Daz Dakin & Ethan Howarth just kept piling on the agony for the dancers' legs with Mark Freeman returning to the decks to bring a brilliant night to a reluctant conclusion with the three before eight at 6am. It was a night of sheer indulgence - tunes so heavily popularised back in the day that they rarely get a spin now were played in all their glory together with current floor fillers that had their debut on the decks at Wigan and those that slipped from the limelight but not people's memories. If it's ever repeated (and it should be, but not often) then get yourself to Nuneaton Co-Op and prepare to have a bloody good time. I'd give it 6 stars if I could!!!

    Kibworth Soul 4

Great line up being "warmed up" by none other than Mick Taylor 7:30 - 8:30!
  3. Thanks - I was mapping soul events for March and couldn't stick a pin on the map for you! I guess your local punters know the venue well. I'll stick your pin on!!
  4. What is the name of the venue and the postcode?
  5. Thanks Matt - I might pop along myself as a paying guest!
  6. My son, Sam, is at Beckett too - 1st year. Might use the Charity All Dayer at Headingly as an excuse to go visit him, or as Wednesday is my day off I could persuade him to take me to the HiFi Club! The son down in London actually blew me out on Crossfire because he was "super busy"! Meanwhile I'll see you a week on Saturday. Looking forward to it.
On my previous visit in August the place was packed to the gunnels with some great DJs playing and I had a really good time, but moaned about the state of the floor. Last night the floor was still misbehaving but I enjoyed the evening so much more. It's not a wood floor so can feel a bit grippy and it doesn't breathe so condensation can make it slippy! Hairaising if you cross from grippy to slippy!! A bit of musical mopping and opening the windows helped but the real problem was the person who put oil on it! A liberal application of talc soon soaked that up and thereafter the floor behaved impeccably. So what was so good about last night compared to the jam packed event in August? The crowd felt right for the size of the room. Comfortably full without feeling like a sardine. Great atmosphere, good vibes, nice people. It's a great venue. Easily accessible from the M6, really quick bar staff, low bar prices. The DJ roster was excellent and the music first class. The floor was busy but there was room to move. For me it achieves the perfect balance between the small room intimacy of soul clubs (without the handbags) and the authenticity of big venue niters (without being in a fancy barn). It's just how I like my soul served! I will definitely be back for second helpings.
  7. Great music will always live on. The enormous catalogue of songs unearthed to serve the Northern Soul scene is a legacy enjoyed by today's younger generation. Maybe not as original vinyl played at provincial Soul Clubs, but as an important genre of dance music. In my youth the only way to hear a top tune was to own it, know someone who owned it or go to a club with a DJ who owned it. It was exclusive. In todays digital world it just ain't so anymore. Anyone and everyone can "get into Northern Soul". I'm a 57 year old returner but I meet newbies young and old and lots of "It'll never be over for me" diehards who haven't skipped a weekend for 40 years! I prefer to hear OVO at clubs and niters and dance to it with likeminded people. Thanks to the digital age I can hear those tunes again in my car with out forking out ££££. And my kids hear them and are influenced by them. My 20 year old at Uni in London sent a video clip from a club he was in of what was unmistakably Curtis Mayfield Move On Up with a note saying, "We gotta go dancing Mum, be my date". His girlfriend took him on a date to the 100 club and he had a great time. My 19 year old at Uni in Leeds was out on the town with his mates when he heard the unmistakable 4:4 beat and snare drum from inside a club. He said, "I immediately knew what sort of music they were playing Mum, and said we should go in. My mates couldn't believe how brilliant the music was!". I wouldn't take either of them to a typical provincial Soul Club, but I'd happily take them along to Blackheart, Rugby or Kings Hall. I think provincial Soul Clubs probably will wither and die as the people who frequent them advance towards their dotage and 100's of bootleg copies of Do I Love You" will flood carboot sales. However, I think events like Niters will probably continue to attract new generations who want to experience the authenticity of the music in the type of environment that gave life to it.
A great little club delivering rare and underplayed. Lovely room with a small well polished floor that performs even better with a whiff of talc. Noted for playing mid tempo and ballads but they can crank it up with class. Often rare and underplayed = crap with a pulse, NOT HERE! Once again there wasn't a tune I'd heard before but there were many I'd love to listen/dance to again. No big crowds, bootlegs or backflips - just a friendly bunch who offer welcome variety to my Northern Soul experience.
First time there. Lovely little soul club, very welcoming and some great tunes but the star of the show was the floor. Best surface I've danced on by a mile.
  8. Seems a good excuse to visit number three son!
Sticky floor Everything else was great - the DJ's, the music, the turnout, the bar staff, the people (bar the one VERY drunk lady lurching unpredictably round the floor at the end!)
Went on the recommendation of the Cheeky Blinders and didn't regret it. Great venue, good music and a very sweaty time had by me!
