  12. Yet more sad news, just reported in the forums by @kevinsoulman the sad news that Robert "Big Sonny" Edwards of The Intruders has passed away PHILADELPHIA (AP) — An original member of the pioneering Philadelphia-based soul group The Intruders has died. Robert "Big Sonny" Edwards was 74. Edwards died Saturday at a Philadelphia hospital after suffering a heart attack at his home. His death was announced Tuesday by music producers Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff. After forming in 1960 as a doo-wop group, The Intruders signed with Gamble and Huff in 1966 and helped define the smooth, soulful Philadelphia Sound. Their 1968 smash, "Cowboys to Girls," topped the R&B charts and was the first hit song for Gamble and Huff. The original lineup of The Intruders disbanded in 1975. Gamble and Huff say Edwards and the rest of The Intruders helped launch their career as a producing team. Edwards is survived by his wife, a son and two grandchildren. An obituary can be read on the philly.com website, a preview clip features below and a link to the article follows this In his mind's eye, Jerry Blavat can see the members of the 1960s-70s soul and R&B quartet the Intruders. They are still passing time in Philly arcades, using their last bits of pocket change listening to jukeboxes and playing pinball, and learning to harmonize for the first time. For many people, the longtime Philly-area DJ said, the Intruders' music still represents growing up in the city. "It's music that people never forget, and it's music with the lyrics that they relate to," said Blavat, host of the WXPN-FM show The Geator's Rock & Roll, Rhythm & Blues Express. "The real sound of the Intruders was Big Sonny." Blavat was referring to Robert "Big Sonny" Edwards, an original member of the Philadelphia-based vocal group. Edwards, 77, died Saturday after suffering a heart attack at his Philadelphia home, according to a news release from Gamble-Huff Music, the group's producers. http://www.philly.com/philly/obituaries/20161020_Robert__quot_Big_Sonny_quot__Edwards__77__original_member_of_soul_R_B_group_the_Intruders.html

  16. As reported in the forums by member @Kris Holmes Clifford Curry passed on very recently. The Knoxville Mercury marked the sad news with an article about 'one of its great voices' Sweet Clifford: Remembering Knoxville Soul Legend Clifford Curry In Inside the Vault, Music Stories by Eric Dawson September 9, 20161 Knoxville lost one of its great voices when soul singer Clifford Curry died on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the age of 79, after a stroke several days earlier. Curry never achieved widespread fame, but he had a solid, consistent career that it’s hard to imagine anyone replicating in today’s music world. His recording career stretched from his teenage years to 2015 and covered more than a dozen labels. He wrote songs for everyone from obscure Knoxville acts to the Oak Ridge Boys, found popularity in Europe, sang soul, gospel, and country, and experienced that rare thing in the entertainment business: a second act. 22. James Wright founding member of the Spellbinders passed away this morning. A talented singer and writer James like most of his generation he never saw the financial fruits of his work. He had been unwell for some time and has succumbed to injuries sustained during a fire at his apartment some months ago. James wrote "I need your love" on the magnificent Spellbinders album "The Magic of the Spellbinders". I had the honour of meeting and interviewing him some years ago, he was a real gent that told the most wonderful stories of his time with the Spellbinders (and other groups) he will be sorely missed.

  25. Message from Eddie Union -- To all concerned. I'm letting you know that we lost a member of the Volumes. Our group member and brother, Robert Peterson was shot and killed in a home invasion, May 17th or 18th. His home had been broken into and car stolen numerous times. We begged him to move from that area. or get a dog or a gun. He has lived there since 1972, and didn't want to leave. Keep him and his family in your prayers. He will be greatly missed. Robert was a member of the group that played the Prestatyn Weekender a few years back. He was also a member of the Magnetics, including the time when the Volumes used that name for a short period. added by site Fox News local coverage of this sad story can be read here DETROIT (WJBK) - An elderly man stays in his Detroit house for decades and refuses to leave even after being targeted by thieves over and over again.
