"I Am What I Am" by Jackie Follett is a 1967 release on Verve Forecast which, I believe, is the folk music subsidiary of the Verve label. Probably implies that Jackie Follett is a white artist. It was first spun in 1986 by Keb Darge under the c/u guise of "I Am What I Am" by Joyce Kennedy. The label is, indeed, a gold/mustard colour, and now sells for about £50.

Jackie is also known for her earlier discovery, "There's A Moment", also on Verve Forecast.

I think she is in fact white, remember reading a few lines in some Jazz book way back when I still had flowing locks and decent eyesight! If you like the 'I am what I am' track then check out Dana Vallery 'Never Let Go' on UK Decca (I think) which has a similar sound. I like it anyway and have spun it a few times at the Plinston in the first hour slot.
