  1. We have a very exciting new release on Big AC Records: Thinkin' About You, by a fantastic new soul singer named Carmy Love, who has previously performed with House Gospel Choir, New Street Adventure and Cool Million, to name a few. Influenced by the “Crossover Soul” period of the late 60’s and early 70’s, “Thinkin’ About You” clicks into gear from the off, with bold brass and a funky bassline paving the way for Carmy’s stunning vocal. Whether moving on from a romantic relationship, friendship or maybe even a bad year, “Thinkin’ About You” highlights the importance of maintaining a pos

  3. Modern Musings………news and grooves from the Modern Side with Mark Randle I find myself tempted to start once again with mention of the weather here in the UK, but it’s all just a little too depressing so I’ll keep it brief. Suffice to say my thoughts go out to all those affected by the floods after the most recent round of deluges. Furthermore, we must of course spare a thought for our American friends in the wake of hurricane Sandy. It makes what we’ve had to contend with seem rather trivial. We’ll leave it at that as there’s lots to cover on the music front. I was sad to hear recently of

News/Article/Feature Highlight: What I thought was great in 2008 by Mark Randle Gang, I was asked prior to Christmas 2008 to submit a written piece for a propsed publication to be released around Christmas 2008. This I did, but for various reasons the publication never got releas... View full article

  8. I create listings of my favourite cuts at each year end from a contemporary soul/dance/jazz perspective, and can't remember whether I've posted them here before, but here they are for 2012. I guess "All About The Soul" is the correct forum, but apologies if not. There are 100 soul CD/MP3 cuts and 100 dance jazz 12"/MP3 cuts. I'll list them as normal, but will also attach JPG for anyone particularly interested, as the formatting can prove troublesome in list form. Hope you enjoy checking them out! 1. Audio feat. Vince Broomfield Won’t Somebody (UK Soul Junction 7”) 2. Maurissa Rose
  9. Indeed it is. 21st century, the year 2002 and all that. Life is very complicated these days and that includes the modern soul scene. What was seen to be a variation of the northern soul scene in the late 70s/early 80s, i.e. rare recently released soul, is now a mixture of many different sub-genres. The good news is that if you’re broad minded and like variety then there’s lots of good stuff out there to listen or dance to. The not so good news is that if you only like a certain type of modern soul, you are going to disappointed at a chunk of the night’s music – unless you go to a specialist mo

  12. I've decided to knock my Modern Musings column in Soul Up North on the head after 11 years in the "modern soul" seat. I figure 11 years is long enough for both readers and scribe alike! LOL Anyway, I was reflecting, and thought that those of you with a broad taste or specifically into moder soul might be interested to see my very first submission from summer 2002. Quite scarry really because in terms of the record reviews it certainly doesn't seem like 11 years ago.......blimey! Things like the use of the word "garage" are amusing in hindsight.......I haven't used that term for years and l
  13. Modern Musings…….…news and grooves from the Modern Side with Mark Randle Once again I’ve left it to the last minute to pen this piece, so it’s just as well that we’ve had another dumping of snow because if it were a gorgeous spring day outside I would be sitting here feeling cheated. Yes I did say spring, as last week saw us officially enter spring but you would never believe it looking out of the window. Biggest downer is that the football is called off, which means that via re-arrangement of said fixture, and the always busy Easter period, Nuneaton Town now face four fixtures over six days

This will hopefully be a regular piece with marks recommendations of recent Modern Soul releases. Soul Up North Is just about to Issue it's 75th Issue...more details to follow as soon as I get them. 15. The following article and the Mary Love story was ripped from a great mag called Soul Underground, The winter 94 issue, I don't think the mag is still going and it seemed a waste for good articles like these to be lost. If anyone knows different please get in touch. Mark Sergeant wrote a great article on the "case for defence for modern soul" and even though its 4 years old reckon it's a good view on a old subject. The advent of Crossover Soul has seen a degree of acceptability finally afforded towards what is now regarded by some as 'Traditional' Modern Soul. The term 'Modern Soul'

  18. What I thought was great in 2008 by Mark Randle Gang, I was asked prior to Christmas 2008 to submit a written piece for a propsed publication to be released around Christmas 2008. This I did, but for various reasons the publication never got released. I put quite a bit of effort into this at a time of year when spare time is at a premium, and am therefore reluctant to let it got to waste. I'm posting it here in the hope that it may be an interesting read for some of you, so here goes: "What I thought was great in 2008" Regarding life in general, 2008 comes to an end in a

  20. It’s been a long time since I added anything worthwhile to this site so I though I ought to pull my finger out. I haven’t been out much recently so can’t really say anything about venues although I do feel as if I am missing out on a lot at the moment! Despite that my system at home has taken plenty of hammer because the excellent tunes keep arriving. The soulful house epidemic seems to be dying down as the ratio of top quality sounds continues to reduce. It certainly seems that way to me unless you’ve got dig much deeper to find the best releases. Despite that, the pure soul stuff is top d
