  13. Obituary Tony May came from an arts-based family. His father was an actor and classically trained violinist, while his mother was a jazz pianist and composer; she wrote an Ella Fitzgerald 1939 recording. Tony learnt the piano and, as a teenager, tuned them at venues including the Harlem and Brooklyn Apollos and many other top black music night spots. This gave him an insight into the world of contemporary music. A degree course in Physical Education at Temple University didn’t work out - he found the course uninspiring and quit. Musicians had always fascinated him but his first job

  21. Very sad to report that legendary Motown bass player Bob Babbitt passed away this morning. He played on thousands of Motown and other Detroit label recordings, as a member of the Funk Brothers and as a session musician around the city. He will be sadly missed. added by site http://www.bobbabbitt.com/about.htm As Bob's reputation grew, so did his recording schedule. One frequent employer was local R&B producer Ed Wingate, who owned Golden World studio. During this period Babbitt first came into contact with some of Motown's moon- lighting musicians, including keyboardists Joe Hunter and Joh

In the case of Willie Mitchell, it is an epithet thoroughly deserved and honestly earned. His contribution to American popular music, generally, and Memphis music, specifically, was immense. From his early days playing trumpet in various local bands around Memphis in the 1940s, to forming and leading his own ensemble in the 19

The forum thread can be read here http://www.soul-sour...showtopic=85454 Sad news indeed. Mike Terry tribute I first met Mike in 1993. I had spoken to him by phone at his home in New Jersey but visited him in Detroit, when he moved back the same year. From the outset, he was friendly, warm, kind and helpful.
