I think the first press is plain blocky text logo with an orange label, and there's a yellow label with a more ornate text logo and the cartoon of the girl. And there's a third label design with green and white diagonal stripes and the cartoon girl. I'm pretty sure they would all have been pressed round about the same time...

Yes I think you're right, when I was on the hunt for this 45 I have read on the net that the orange label was the very first press, the yellow and the striped ones would be slightly later pressings.

    Hi everyone,

    Another really reluctant sale today:

The Third Guitar - Baby Don't Cry / Don't Take Your Love From Me (Rojac)

One of the most representative and popular 45 of the deep funk genre. Flipside "Don't Take Your Love From Me" is a passionate soul ballad.

Condition is nice VG+ (few scuffs NAP). Labels are clean (B side is slightly off-center but doesn't affect play whatsoever). See pictures below.

Youtube clips are from my 45.

Price is £150 including registered shipping. Most copies in same condition goes rather in the £250 rate. I need urgent money to pay the bills so please no long holds.

Please PM or send me a message at: m.philippe63@laposte.net

    Thanks

    Mickaël

I'm a funk collector and I have or know of plenty private pressed records with the name of the artist or producer for label name, for example:

Tony Bowens & Soul Choppers- Boilin' Water on Tony Bowens,

Reginald Milton & Soul Jets - Clap Your Hands on Milton,

Dayton Sidewinders - Let's Go Down To Funksville on Carlo (name of label owner is Carl Cowen)

    etc...

  7. The original LP did it have the sticker on the front cover saying "Includes the hit/track Im your pimp"? I always thought this issue was AFTER it became played?

I know it has been the subject of many topics AND I feel it is a very difficult one to tell the first issue from re-issues?

JM told me a few years back that it was the number of turns in the run out groove? Say 3 for first issue and 4 for the others? I think the stamp/matrix is positioned in the first run out groove but on the re-issues it is further in?

If anyone can say I would be a happy bunny.

My copy is without sticker, I'll try to lay hands on it to check.

So... my copy has two turns in the run out groove on side A and three on side B. On both sides the matrix stamp (GSF.S.1011A/B) is positioned in the first turn.

    Hope this helps!

  10. Some nice picks so far on this thread! Chuck Carbo is one of my favs. Some obscure ones too --- I'm surprised to see a mention of Carlos Malcolm. Here are a few of my top 45s:

First, Lou Courtney, "Hot Butter 'n All". Just totally, totally insane. This was just mind-boggling the first time I heard it. The flip is an instro version, and there's also a different version by Donald Height on the same label.

Second, one of my favourite instros, The Soul Swingers, "Ca'-Ba'-Dab". After years, I finally scored a copy a few weeks ago for only $125!!! (Found a BIN from a seller in Memphis who thought it was a Memphis 45.)

Finally, one of my top sister funk 45s: Dorothy, Oma, and Zelpha, "Gonna Put it on Your Mind". Surprising sound for a Motown label!

Great call Ephraim - that Lou Courtney 45 is a regular spin for me. And boy you got dead lucky with Soul Swingers - congrats!

Got to say these sort of tunes do it for me a lot more than the "funky Wigan" type tunes that some seem to prefer. Personal choice and all that though, I guess, so whatever floats your boat guys

Ephraim, I agree with Godzilla! The Soul Swingers 45 is one of my all time wants.

BTW, I forgot to mention this awesome Hammond instro:

Larry Ellis & The Black Hammer-Funky Thing (Al King)

And one of the best sister funk 45 ever made IMO:

Honey & The Bees-Love Addict (Arctic)

And feel free to have a listen to my YT channel as I regularly upload my funk treasures!

I know of a french 1973 press on Pathé Marconi-EMI and another one from Venezuela.

Mine is a 1973 US press without sticker on cover.

Edit: I had a reissue of it a few years, ago,  the paper label was bright unlike the original which looks dull.
