Just a couple of years back, a book was produced with a personal account of the Top 500 Northern Soul records. A mate passed on a CD with every tune on it plus the next 100 records on the list.

Whilst not at all taking it seriously....I was 'shocked & surprised' not to mention 'angry & naffed off' by some of the inclusions wink.gif .

Not heard for 30 years & never want to hear again......

    Bob Wilson - Suzy's Serenade

Bob Brady & The Concords - Everybody's Going To A Love In

    Andre Brasseur - The Kid

    Pleasantly surprised to see included......

Bobby Womack - So Many Sides Of You

Lew Kirton - Heaven In The Afternoon

Charles Johnson - Never Had A Love So Good

    Shurely shome mishtake......

Trammps - Hold Back The Night

    Mandrill - Never Die

Don't know where I was when these 3 got played (probably in the car park)......

    The Fiestas - Think Smart

    The Gypsies - It's A Woman's Wold

Debbie Dean - Why Am I Loving You

How can you possibly have these 2 sitting next together.......?

589 @ The Petals - You Can't Close The Windows Of Your Heart

590 @ Bobby Williams - I've Only Got Myself To Blame

  2. Will all the fans of Quality 60s Soul music get together AGAIN in the end? Will there be 1 big allnighter in the future where RnB ....Ska.....Popcorn.........Latin.......Mods.......Soulfans.......Scooter nutters........Skinheads......

    11___Timmie_Williams___Competition.MP3

Nice thought, but as in my experience you can't get even a small number of northern soul fans (who happen to be mates) to agree on what constitutes a decent and acceptable set, I think you have an uphill battle.

    Maybe more scope outside UK?

Thats where you are missing out. Shell out £150 on a pair of Bose earphones. Worth every penny.

Sorry to hi jack your thread Helen - nice to meet you at Bisley.

  5. What I mean is:

A classic song that ISN'T Northern (obviously) ISN'T Soul e.g - "My Generation" - The Who / "Louie Louie" The Kingsmen etc etc.

....are you following me so far???

Absolutely. But listing all the records that aren't northern soul isn't going to be much fun for us soulies

  6. Can't seem to find 'Deep In My Soul' on iTunes

Is that on iTunes or another directory?

    Yep. on the front page

Make sure you are in the pod casts bit, you should see 'power search' click on that & enter 'northern soul' in the 'description' box. The first thing on the list of 1 to 6 is called "Northern Soul' Click on that you get 3 sub categories. Its written - DeEp In My SoUL...

For those that aren't aware..... you can, if you have iTunes download Northern Soul podcasts free of charge.

I'm currently listening to an hours worth of 'Deep In My Soul' which is spot on.

When I did search for "northern soul" only 6 came up though.

Any advice on why that might be or where to go for others?

    Thanks

    Col.

  8. whatever people think about Ian

just remember the new releases he played at the Mecca etc have gone a

long way to prepare the thing we call modern soul/x-over

he knows more about 70s groups,re line ups,who sang with who etc

than anyone i know with pahaps the exception of john smith and a few others

    I'd agree with Mike

The Mecca was 30 yrs ago. Never went myself though choice.

If there is any debt of gratitude its to the artists/arrangers/producers/label owners who without getting too flowery, produced the goods & enriched our lives.

Being a DJ is quite frankly just a lucky break. Just about any moron could pull that off.

  9. Best book for photos is def the Motown Album with a foreward by Berry Gordy.

Approx 250 photos many of which I've never seen before........candid stuff like photos taken at the Motown picnic mid sixties.

Quite a few in rehearsal room & 'charm school' etc

    Lovely stuff thumbsup.gif

    ISBN 0-312-04517-4

  10. Fantastic book. If anyone has a copy in decent shape I'll buy it from them. Must have spine intact and no wol etc. Cash waiting.

Must be your lucky day Dave.

I think that I've got a spare copy in the loft......and its near mint.

    pm me your address pls

Have just purchased "Marvin Gaye The Master 1961-1984" Its a hard back book measuring approx 280 x 280mm.

Its mainly pictoral & features some stunning full page, jaw dropping photos of the man.

Built into the front cover is a 4 set CD anthology.

Produced by Universal Music. There are also seperate boks in same format/series for Stevie Wonder & Dusty Springfield.

Be interested to know of anything similar out there fror other artists.

  12. Hmm.........South East appears to be a real hot bed of soul.

So why is there almost nothing on down here............apart from the odd do thats often poorly attended.

Answers on the back of a 50 quid note pls.

Or if you live up north a potato.

  13. I occasionally went to Pantiles in the early 70's but did not like the music. Originally from Camberley, my friends and I (or on my own) went to the commercial and non commercial soul music clubs around the area during the early/mid 1970's: Bisley Pavilion; Aldershot -Buxted Chicken Factory; Camberley-Agincourt, Shades of Green, Banners/Cambridge Hotel, Hawley Hotel; Farnborough-Town Hall, Queens Hotel, Blue Moon, Big C. Tumbledown Dick; Fleet-Town Hall, Silver Park Club, Fleet Country Club. I also used to go to Reading Top Rank (Night Owl), Farnham-Harveys; Woking-Atlanta; Richmond-Cheeky Pete's; Egham-Francos; Guildford-Annabellas/Cinderellas, Windsor Safari Park Club, plus the club under Bracknell carpark - Dawbourne's (I think).

Wow, you must have really struggled with your homework.
