  1. BTW haven't seen you out and about lately?

Thanks for asking, truth be known overcooked it a bit. Got caught up in the politics of scene. Now coming out on an occasional basis - now going for quality over quantity.

Hope to see you & et all @ Cleethorpes.

  2. think the answer was that when 12s came out there was no rule, like LPs are 33, and 7s and 45. With a 12 this rule didn't apply and some treated them like an album, others like a 45. I don't theink the answer is anything more elaborate than that.

Thanks for replies chaps. But is it possible to view your average 12" & work out the speed?

Following on from the 'What's The Best Line In A Record?' thread which I really enjoyed,

I was wondering what the most iconic lyrics on the northern scene might be?

By iconic I think I mean that if you heard said lyrics used in some conversation or quote away from the scene, you would immediately connect them back to the soul scene.

Appreciate Frank Wilson might come to mind, but lets give that one a rest.......

Why were some 12" pressed at 45rpm & some pressed at 33rpm?

Was there any logic behind the speed they were pressed at?

Is it possible or indeed easy to look at 'unmarked 12' disc & tell just by looking at the grooves what the correct play speed is?

    Cheers

  5. Is this the worst kind of snob i followed a certain collector/dj(probably played at Thorne and soul essence not a bad thing i might add as the greats have played there) at the revered Staffordshire/Wolverhampton venue in the early ninties i had to try and rescue it cause he cleared the floor for virtually the whole hour. as i was putting on my first record he said to me ive just played what i have on in the car and i couldnt give a shit

Probably the second most boring anecdote I've ever heard.

  6. A guy once told me the following:

"I had all the records back in the day, ain't going there again, lining the pockets of the record dealers, any record I want I can get cut"

So he does and DJ's regularly, calls OVO guys snobs.

    Opinions?

Probably the most boring anecdote I've ever heard.

  7. I dont know the guys name, but sure most people know him. He wears glasses, is about 5'8"ish, possibly slightly balding, always immaculatley dressed and always has record box in tow. Possibly from the Manchester area?

Hey that could almost be me - except I'm almost totally bald, dress like a tramp & can't be arsed with records.

    I've never been to Manchester.

  8. To Snook

Back in the 70's it was either Soul Sam or Brian Rae who played it at St Ives. Soul Sam is mentioned in this thread as having had an acetate but I know for certain that Brian played it on the recognised black In bootleg before it was available to the punters 'cos I had a butchers at the time.

    Mick

Sam is also documented as having owned it.

Nonsense! It's just this kind of overblown rhetoric re. Frank Wilson that makes everyone tired of hearing about the record whatever it's merits. It defined nothing apart from Russ (and Wigan's) close relationship with Simon Soussan's nefarious activities. Something we knew all along!

It doesn't prove anything about Russ's relationship with Soussan. Russ bought the tune from Les McCutcheon a well known surrey record dealer.

  10. I can remember exactly where I was stood in the Casino when this was first spun. I looked at my mates, they looked at me. We just stood there gawping at each other. "What the f*** is this?" we were all shouting at each other. Lots of shoulder shrugging and "f*** knows but its brilliant." The all place seemed to realise too. It got spun again a short while after and the place went mad. You couldnt get on the floor. People just dancing like they had known it for ages. That is a sign of a top record. Of course its a classic. Booted to soon, yes.Overplayed , yes. But if you were there at that first airing.... .......well youd never forget it. Never ever.

    Good read, quality post.
