I love the varied soul sounds that Stax Records committed to tape, however this track was an 'outside recording' (cut in a basic Muscle Shoals studio) picked up from a little indie label for release on Volt.
To me it's a very messy track with below par lead vocals (on this side of the 45 at least). As this sale was of the Volt version, not the Paradox 45, can't understand why it goes for so much money ( & I know it's a NS dancer but it 's far from being one of the best of the genre). Guess it has to be cos many Volt copies out there are SS demo's which don't feature this cut. I'd buy a Volt demo as "Love Changes" is a very classy example of deep soul.
It sounds like an unfinished demo to me. It could have been so much better with some strings to fill out the sparse arrangement.

A friend of mine used to Dj for me, there was no way he would cue up his records.
We had some lovely long silences during his spot, with everyone looking around to see what was up. 🤣🤦♂️
If you’re going be a promoter, then for goodness sake try and be professional.
Quality sound system. Including a quality microphone.
Turntables adjusted correctly, with regular new styli.
Sound system set up correctly, without making people’s ears bleed.

You are quoting from an audiophile publication, which is aimed at getting the absolute perfect reproduction, in a perfect setting.
The video that I posted, is produced by a leading stylus manufacturer, and shows how to set up your turntable in a club setting. i.e. full of people banging and crashing about, and clumsy Dj’s trying to cue up the next record.
Also your quoted publication would, I’m pretty sure, be primarily concerned with 12” albums. There is more skate pressure present on albums than 7” singles.

That’s the other problem with promoters and Dj’s.
Most haven’t got a clue about PA, they can’t set one up, and they just turn the gains up, until it's making your ears bleed.
They think nothing about paying thousands for a record, but buy the cheapest pile of crap to play it on.
Including the microphone,

This kind of discussion makes me smile. Everyone one the scene these days is a member of the soul police.
Back when we were teenagers, there were no rules. Despite what many think today, it was primarily a dance scene.
And for the people who were on the dance floor back then, records like:
under my thumb, footsie, the snake etc were loved and danced to with vigour.
The derision of such anthems by people on here, smacks of hypocrisy to me.
They’re part and parcel of northern soul, and we should embrace them as such.

Absolutely mate. I’d never met him either.
It was Cliff that knew him from his earlier days on scene, and knew the quality of his records.
This must have been the period when Ted was looking after his wife, and wasn’t able to go out.
Terrible what happened to him with the robbery, and very sad that he’s no longer with us.

I think that I was responsible for getting Ted back out Dj’ing.
I was looking for guest Dj’s for my all-nighters, and Cliff (Camfield) mentioned Ted’s name.
I knew he was on soul source, but I had never met him. So I messaged Ted, and asked him if he would like to come and do a spot? Cliff had told me that he had a fantastic collection.
Anyhow, Ted got back to me, and if I remember correctly, he couldn’t do it. I think his wife was ill at that time?
But later, he contacted me and agreed to come up to Burnley.
That was it for Ted. He was constantly being booked to Dj after that night.
Very sad news indeed.

Is anyone else having issues with the site?
I think it’s mainly down to using a Mac. Because it seems fine on my phone.
I know there’s lots of work going on with the site at this time, but it’s really hard work, and I’m worried that stuff isn’t being updated as it should.
Hardly any of the buttons actually work. -

The problem with discussing the merits of records, whether expensive, or cheap?
We all have different tastes.
Especially after all the years have gone by. At one time, all we wanted was to dance.
But sitting at home with a drink, listening to tunes as an old person?
Completely different kettle of fish.
All you can do is recommend something to the other members of the forum.
But you need to be prepared for negative comments, as well as positive ones. After all, it would be a boring world if we all liked the same things.
Regarding auction finishing prices?
I also enjoy reading them, and I’m very appreciative of the members who take the time to collate and list them here for us all.
I totally understand the incredulous reactions to some of the winning bids. But at the same time, I have in the past, paid over the odds to obtain a must have record. So I kind of understand the rush of blood that is auction fever.
I realise that we’ve been saying for 40 years, that the end is nigh on high prices. But I genuinely do think we have passed the hiatus.
Some tunes that were on everyone’s wants list a few years ago, are now impossible to sell at their four figure prices.
The big oldies however, just seem to go on forever.
