  1. What about the storys of well respected DJ's who have spent £2k on a bootleg and played it out for ages till he found out it was a boot, does that count ?? ( source JM, about a week ago on another thread !!)

Wasn't there a thread on here ages ago about several top DJ's playing bootlegs with photocopys of original labels stuck on them ?

    Ian.

now thats been going on since the year dot.:thumbup:

Today I bought from Brantano in Lincoln a pair of original Clarkes polyveldts..... Clarkes have done, it brought them back at last........ they are the same as those from those heady days of the latter 7ts early 8ts, they are the dogs nads and still as comfy, will be trying them out at mexborough on sunday to see if they still dance the same, (not that I can anymore) But at 45 quid a pair they havent risen in price that much really since me last pair........ well done clarkes at long chuffing last....... me old mates are back.

  4. 1. No, I alluded to how often they go out.

    2. It was a joke.. the opposite of serious FFS!

    3. Neddy Seagoon's the name.

Goodnight Pete, Dave and Mark, thanks for the banter, just realised am on early shift tomorrow and up at 5.30am  , no doubt this thread will go on somewhat over the next few days, and will long continue after the last photograph has been signed and the last scone buttered :D xxx

  5. Yep all bases covered there, tied up, kidnapped, but had a jolly good time. but dare anyboy else enjoy the same treatment at a similar event, and it is very similar, the theme that is, but obviously not or is it? like i said i won't be going nor did i watch the play, not for me, but hey if it's my birhday who knows? then it will be for me,

and I will personally sing happy birthday to you poppet  x

  6. Once upon a ruddy time but i enjoyed the play? how many bases are we covering here? did you or did you not pay and give your time up to watch a retro look at the casino? i give up, where you moving the goalposts to next?

And i think its those who consider themselves more upfront who are guilty of ramming beliefs down folks throats! how many cafe attendees on here upping it?

to busy getting on with enjoying life to be bothered with what we think,

Now to be honest re Pauls Play, In my defence, not that I need one :D but it was a birthday treat from my family and a complete surprise to me that I went, but have to say I did enjoy it, and it gave good insight through sympathetic adaption. But whereas when we look at that as an example and a cafe.... theres no comparison really a few glass cases with some patches, clothing and the like with some nice artwork, mixed in with the smell of chipfat, just does not do it for me, that really is moving the goalposts, surely to goodnes the smell of brut, urine and a tinge of green in the air would have been far better

  7. But its got everything to do with todays scene as there will be as many attending or buying into it as almost anywhere or anything else on the scene, so therefore it is part of the scene,

Otherwise why are we discussing it?

It might not be anything to do with your scene but the very fact its on here creating a reaction says it's part of todays scene,

I reckon the people who do buy into it are really concerned about what we think! NOT

Too busy enjoying life i bet,

Do you really think they are Pete? or do you think they perhaps are thinking, "well its on the doorstep we dont have to travel far", or maybe they just accept it to get a fix of what it was, or is? Now take the Drifters for example, they are a prime caberet act something ya nan would enjoy seeing, something never in a million years ya would you expect to be head lining at a soul weekender (where is this on exactly anyway) Maybe the promotors are now thinking, we have reached a certain age in life and need this sort of act to entertain us. next thing ya know we shall be slow dancing together :D:ohmy:

  8. 1 Plenty have and will pay a visit

2 Lots will pay to watch and enjoy

    3 Same as 2

4 Some will buy, up to them, if they don't then so be it,

I don't really care for any of the above issues as i won't be attending/buying into any of them, not for me, but hey if anybody reading this is planning to or has enjoyed any of the above then good on you and all the best!

yeah but dont cha just get soooooo fed up with it being pushed down yer neck, as the best things since sliced bread, its like the caff in wigan, once uopn a ruddy time (and no pun intended Paul S, cos I liked the play) wigan chuffing council were hell bent on getting rid of the casino, now they realise they have got some great press going on here, and people will spend lots of money here when they come and visit on the pilgrimage, its a bit disneyfied and a bit of a slap around the wotsits, they should have made more of a fuss about the museum thingy that was there, but obviously that wasnt corporate enough.... ok rant over, wheres the nearest exit  Is the shopping centre staying open on the day of the official do??? at twelve quid a ticket, if it is, just pretend your doing some shopping and you can hear and see it all for free. :D

  9. Why is there so many uncool things happening at the moment?

    1. Casino Cafe - What an horrible idea. It makes my stomach twist.

    2. The Drifters - We are now having a major weekender booking cabaret acts. If I am right, there isn't one original member alive?

    3. Signed photos of John Vincent & Russ Winstanley - Here is offending item in full...'Tickets for ths one are £10 or the VIP ticket which includes Champagne, pizzas, pastas and salad bar in the VIP lounge, then we are having autographed photos with Dean , Russ and John, these tickets are £30'

    4. The Ian Levine CD - Everything about this is so wrong. The songs, the production, the markerting and above all it is being pushed by someone who isn't part of the current scene.

I always thought this scene was underground, cool, mysterious, exciting and better than anything else. I think the above examples prove otherwise.

    Sad times ahead methinks

    Shane

ESP...... my thoughts exactly well said Shane

    A Cafe!!!!!!!

    The Drifters!!!!!!!

Oh I shall be pleased when he goes back !!!!!!!!!!

From a DJ point just enjoy yourself I always do  A DJ I admire and used to love to watch and listen to is the late Derek Allen.

Me too, he always had a huge grin on his face when he did it , sung along to everyone too, with real passion as it should be. Never seen anyone like it since. RIP Derek we still miss ya. x

  11. Hi Mace

Yes mate it was Ben !!

I thought he was only 16 but he is under 18 cause he can't get served at the bar laugh.gif:shhh::lol:

He did a cracking job for me on saturday, and yes mate he has got passion for Northern.

I can't say for sure if he's lost his cherry yet :unsure: but he will kill if he reads this :lol:

I have to mention young Callum Turner who I think is 16/17 place played a blinding spot in the modern room at the last Cleethorpes pier mini nighter, when he aint djaying hes dancing. Laura Dixon 17 who got a residency on the decksat Sam Moores place, same as Cal, when she aint spinning shes dancing, same as little miss soul Rosie whos 12 and can spin a set 2nd to none, no they arent a novelty factor just youngsters who perhaps, for now, are into it big time and hope it makes that good an impression on them they adopt it for life just like us old gits

  12. Just to let anyone know who's interested that the final 'Soul Shack' will broadcast on Sunday September 2nd, regular shows until then, thanks again for all the messages, emails, phone calls showing support and good wishes for my efforts over the past seven years.

    Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Mr B such sad news, persoanally thought the soul shack was one of the best on the radio, he's cost me a small fortune since I tuned in to listen  . But serously Mark like many others have said already, its never gonna be the same on Sundays as it was the end of the weekend for me, and set me up til friday night came along again. I have enjoyed all the guests and the varied sounds they have, thank you so much for the invite, just a shame I never made it over due to my studies (4 years is a long time but nearly over thank god). I will enjoy listening to your remaining shows and am certain that the last on September the 2nd will be a very memorable broadcast, give it all you've got hun and go out with a bang. We are gonna miss ya here in Lincoln babycakes  . :D:huh:

  13. I know Mikey's closed his thread down probably rightly so. But I would like to make a point that I don't think has been raised - although I think it's quite relevant.

Jazzy B goes to a Northern do up north - he feels uncomfortable so therefore the scene is racist. What an easy and lazy conclusion to arrive at.

I would venture that anyone arriving at a Northern do for the first time - irrespective of the colour of your skin, would feel a little uncomfortable - I know I did all those years ago. Our scene is different - which is why many of us are into it. It is an underground scene - and our clubs were nothing like your main stream club - thank heavens! It does take a while to find your feet - I've said on here before that you had to "pass" your initiation. Which we've all done - ok a bit tongue in cheek. It had nothing to do with the colour of your skin - you might have been accused of being a div or a plastic!

Jazzy B has demonstrated with his lazy, ignorant accusation that he knows nothing about our scene - yet from his lofty position he would have us all down as racists. It really is pathetic.

Sorry - lhad to get that off my chest.

Good points Pete, but he produces some quality tunes IMHO .... know what ya mean about "the feelings" though. Is this is connection with BBC4's re run of soul brittania?

  14. FROM: www.myspace.com/northernsoul2007

The Northern Soul Scene is a very strange phenomenon. It can be quite wonderful , and around the world there are thousands and thousands of people who really appreciate the music and love the sound and want it to continue into the next generation. It is for these people that I make my music - eleven thousand people who have looked at my MySpace page, over quarter of a million who have watched my videos on YouTube, and so far forty thousand people who have watched the new Voices With Soul video. All this would be wonderful, but...and it's a BIG "But".........The Northern Soul scene has this small insular bunch - just a few hundred but boy oh boy are they loud and nasty - who think it's their little scene. They can't stand progress - they dismiss everything I do without giving it a chance - they want their records to be forty years old on vinyl, and heaven help anyone who DARES to wanna make something new with that classic sound. No matter how much work you put into something, no matter how wonderful it sounds, they have to have their digs, they have to have their spite, and they have to do everything they can to dissuade all their friends from supporting it, because they have to keep their little private uncommercial secret scene closed to outsiders. The problem is that they're all in their mid fifties, and are gonna end up like a Grandad's war veterans reunion, dancing to beat ballads in their zimmer frames.

To this useless and sad bunch, I proudly stick two fingers up with this album. It's not for you. Instead of shaking your heads and wondering why these records are being made, get it through your skulls - IT'S NOT FOR YOU !!!!!!!!!!

Just please ignore it. Forget it exists. Carry on with your own little closed world. It has nothing to do with you. NOTHING - NOW REMEMBER THAT. Now go away and dance to your Shrine releases, and leave the decent music to those who care.

"Let the doorknob hit you where the dog should have bit you", as Marlena Shaw said.

    And GOODBYE.

  15. Firstly i would just like to inform everyone that Carl rang me tonight and would like to thank everyone for all the best wishes he has received since having his attack. He also informed me that someone somewhere this weekend started an absolutely awful rumor that he had died. He wanted all his friends to know he was ok and is making good progress. So if anyone tells you he has passed away make sure you tell them

the malicious rumors of carl's untimely demise are to be treated with the contempt they deserve.

How anyone can start rumors like this is beyond me and is the lowest of the low, imagine how his family and friends must have felt hearing this.
