Really enjoyed the show Arthur, was nice to hear Maria as well, been an age, pls say hello.
Remember you playing the Frederick Hymes back in 200/3/4 at the studio in Sydney.. think other than Butch you were the only other with it at that point?
Great memories..
Mal
It reminded me of our old station Mal, less posters and decks on other side, but otherwise so similar. First time i'd been in a studio since and these guys were so welcoming and fun too, but I stayed off air so you should not have heard me. ...Although we were in hysterics when Arthur started panelling nervously for the first time (ever) about an hour into the show and then accidently pulled the lever on his chair - he was talking live on air and suddently shrunk downward in his seat and nearly disappeared under the desk but still trying to talk into the mic like a true professional. Not laughed so hard in ages, giggling as I write this and remembering.
We didn't record the show, thought it was only a local broadcast until we got there so I let a few people know quickly. Turns out 'The Soul Shack' broadcasts every Sunday 7pm-10pm and often with various guests.

Steve Kilgour is around, does still go to Thorne and he is on FB. Think a memorial night is a good idea, maybe not same night as current Thorne?
I wasn't planning to post. I am sure many of his friends are still in shock and will be sending condolences directly to his family, just as we preferred.
But without discussing the idea with anyone, I think any memorial should be what Ronnie & the family want, and I'm sure that anyone they ask to help out will be there for them (including ourselves).
Many don't know this, but Gary came along with me to make the final booking with the Canal Tavern to start our night - this was his local and he knew the owners. He had no issues, even though he had a well-deserved respected history there. Instead, he has always been very supportive and kind over the years to myself & Karen for bringing the place back as a soul venue. Even before that link, Gary went out of his way for a friendly chat - with me, not just with my man who is a longtime friend. That's the kind of guy he was, ask anyone. He will be missed by so many.

wasnt Maria Orlovic one of the first to get behind the record when it saw its "revival" start of the 2000`s ?
I wrote a long story about this back then, but just a few points tonight:
Got mine from Butch 7 months and two weeks after first hearing it on 16th February 2002, same moment Arthur Fenn first heard it, Sam got his from Butch before I got mine, after hearing it from Arthur at Trentham Gardens (where it got the first outing for the soul scene wave). Arthur got his from Keb Darge, who said he got it from Butch (Keb found a copy not long after trading his copy to Arthur, via someone djing before him at a funk event in Europe).
I disappeared back to Oz once I got mine, but heard quite a few copies turned up the following year (2003) on the UK soul scene, which Butch and I think Andy Dyson were selling. By the time I returned the following year, it was being described as "overplayed" on the rare scene.
I had found one of the band members online before I bought mine, but didn't feel right about chasing the copy another band member had. Someone in the UK caught on to the title early and told me that's how they got theirs, but she later sold it on.

Maybe it comes from growing up in a big city and having bars on our windows (to keep people out, not in), but I like some privacy choice. This is a public forum, open to ANYONE on the internet to read. You can find a real name, their birthday, details about private lives if they put themselves 'out there' a bit, when they're out "clubbing" and sometimes when they're on holiday. Great for identity theft, just for starters
- and much less hassle then Facebook hacking I'd guess.
Some people have conservative jobs where social and professional on-line personalities are best kept very separate. Googling others happens as the norm for work contacts, but a few years ago someone at work simply got curious after overhearing bits of my phone conversations and I found myself removing my surname from our website, embarassed that others wanted to see what he saw. Maybe we also simply don't want work mates knowing about our strange world of soul or collection fetishes. It's just easier not to confuse them with something they'll never understand
.
At the same time, there have been certain people who have been very shitty with their behaviour on Soul Source, then hidden behind obscure user names. I personally would prefer if they were outed more
.

Yes Kitch was pleasure to sign a cd for Lee,least i could do for him
Mick H
Was just fiddling with my camera looking for the videos after reading this page. Guess what the first photo was?
----
I was really pleased I didn't see any reviews before I went, because it made it all even better with what came. Wasn't sure what to expect on how good he would be and was surprised to see the further travelled familiar faces out on a school night and after the snow.
Like others, Lee blew us away and boy could he sing - and moooove! I just loved getting closer and watching his face as he put his all into his performance. If he was on in Manchester tonight instead of last night, I'm sure we'd go again (I need not ask).
Someone needs to get him on at a weekender.. we want more (please)!

I don't think Kenny's nerves'll stand it....
...but we effing loved the fright you gave us!
Also thanks to Nat for drawing my attention to the show's existance. I'm not so good at picking up on what's out there last few years (work+study=brainless).
......and thanks to the show coming through the tele, I finally got round to rethreading our curtains - but add some pictures next time please!

Alongside of giving examples which is a hep to me,cos I ain't got a clue what "crossover"'is could some one define the term crossover?
This is a genuine quest for knowledge not a piss take
If you do a word search in the forum, you will probably find other threads on the subject and realise there is a bit of a debate on the definition. For me, it means a crossing over of styles (soul meets another) and most likely to be a late 60s to early 70s track. But I am sure others will disagree on that and whether a named song even falls into the category. One person's "crossover" can be another person's "70's modern" or just "disco funk" - and I've even heard what I'd simply call "60s soul", described as crossover. One thing's for sure IMHO, depending on where you're personally at with your soul tastes and recording years, seems to influence opinion.
Also, various "crossover" (aka "xover") compilations were put out which may help you gain your own understanding- google the Kent and Goldmine LP's/CD catalogues and look for these, for a start. Also, the audio section would likely have crossover forum threads running where people nominate their tunes (and you can listen via youtube links or refosoul I'm assuming).
These forums can be a bit of a bitch at times, so hope the above helps in your quest.

she was from Boston I think, and was a judge on the Australian pop Idol..along with Dicko!!! ex English record producer Ian Dickinson.
Her daughter is always in News Idea and all the gossip mags over there for one reason or another..
Mal.C
She hailed from America, but came from Jamaican parents (not sure where she was born, I thought Jamaica), then she moved to Oz in the early 70s and been a pop queen there on and off ever since. Her daugher Deni sings as well and has her own following as you know, also gorgeous from what I recall.
Lots of soul stuff released on Oz labels or American imports or even 'dumped' there. All those decades ago, I understand from my history classes that we were still lapping up what the rest of the Commonwealth and USA etc were up to, plus heavy numbers of immigration brought even more such imports ... so between that and due to distances between cities, it's not really that surprising that 'retro' still exists from the golden days. There are (and have been) collectors of soul in quite a few countries who were never associated with, or come from, the uk scene . Not surprising, considering they see it as American black music

Something that knocked me for 6 the moment I heard it and died inside to know it was so hard to get (even before the years flew by). Something I've chased hardest to find the artist, but the only time not just to say 'thanks' for. Something that never ever fails to tear me up inside - every single time I hear it, even though I can't quite put my finger on why. Something that I'd actually sell whatever records from my collection I needed to for, although I'd never accept doing that before.
...and it doesn't matter what it is, as each to their own. I didn't choose it, it chose me! 8-) LOL

Um.......no! Not after a lifetime of Westside Story and Sound of Music renditions by others I've just met
But Martin 'RBMan' bought me a copy of "Take a letter Maria" for my birthday about 6 years ago and knowing I keep my vinyl, has since asked me to play it at Thorne
and must admit, I cracked up laughing first time I heard a certain Scottish dj called Keith, play this song :

Managed to avoid Ryanair as well and going with Easyjet.
Just make sure it fits the dimensions of the steel frame Easyjet ask you to insert your bag in - and chances are they'll ask you to do it after you've queued an hour to try get a good seat and make you take all your purchases out on the floor as people pass by while getting on, then ask you to ut in in the frame, then ask you to do again but flip the box of records for the position they want it to be, and then squeeze the now emptier bag down in all corners to see how snug it fits. After it passes inspection, try and hoist it all compacted out of the frame ...gently. By now you're nearly the last on and struggling to find any overhead cabin space for your records before someone tells you to put it in the hold. The worse can happen, but most times it's not a problem.
Usually there's no problem if you research the size and weight allowance for every flight. They will often separate your bag in the security x-ray screening and when they ask you to open it, be clear they are old vinyl records and that they are "extremely fragile collector pieces". The reason they try and snap them is that drugs have been turned into plates and smuggled in this way, with a journalist embarrasing airline security for not picking it up. Most times they only ask you to show them a few, whilst others want to touch them.
Carrying them in heavy duty cardboard boxes is great when you want to take more and the heavy dj box can go in the hold luggage if you want one for use. I've found the odd holdall with wheels, within dimensions and which opens wide to take a 150 solid box > real handy gems if overall weight meets allowance.
Another option is to bring a mate and ask them to carry a some records. Back home we used to have to fly each time we wanted to attend a soul night outside or own city (else a minimum 21 hour return drive), so got used to knowing what to do.
Just do your research and don't panic or look nervous on the day, else the record box weight won't be your problem - it may be Bob and his rubber glove.
Have fun!

Some Euro events simply don't want the wider UK soulies at their events. Others I presume they are well attended anyway so they feel no need to advertise over here. Those that are popular haunts of the Brits are well known about anyway.
I'm really disappointed this thread deteriorated and am less inclined to post because I just don;t have the energy to debate much these days.
However, I agree with Chalky as I have heard a few Euro promoters actually say they have no interest in appealing to Brits or too many Brits, mainly because they want to nurture their own (often young) scene, just don't need the numbers or see England as another world away (far removed or disinterested) - which would explain why few make an effort to push their event on ss. Outside the UK, there is also a distinction between those events run by Brits and those by the real locals (...given my long history back home, it's no secret where my loyalties lie there). Plus Rimini did suffer some undeserving grief a few years back after many of us (Brits included) fought against those travelling over and trying to take it over from the Italians. It taught other observers from Europe a valuable lesson, but thankfully the weekender is about to celebrate its 10th year, recovering well with numbers and exciting dj lineps. As Edu and Pete have said, the friendships we form in Europe are key to the network. You get to know what people like and most always take an interest and discuss various events.
...And no, I am not pertaining to be an expert - merely an observer with forming views based on my experiences
Mr Rimmer,
Poor you for asking an innocent question and think we've both seen this issue raised before and intiatives suggested. For some Euro events, it's not so easy to advertise early either because the venue gives them little notice like month-by-month and some struggle writing on English speaking forums as well or prefer to use their local networks. Word of mouth from those who've been over or played there and the ss flyer gallery helps, but we hear about most events by chatting to people when we're over, sometimes when events are only at concept or planning stage. Facebook connections have also made news feeds easier. Oh, and you're a lightweight if you've only attended about 20
I do however wish Mike could add the country in the forum headings (say on the right), so it would be easier to scroll through each event by location. But the poor man's had more than enough to do here.
m
ps. Mr Cato, Sam left Sydney a few years ago. Alex or George would've run most soul/NS events there over the past decades but last I heard, a Brit was doing them.

Anyone is there 2 versions of
Peace love & happiness --- aint nothing but a love thang ---- ABAB
Im sure ive heard a different intro on the same label 45
I heard it, eventually bought it and bought another one for a friend here who occassionally visits and asks me to play him stuff. All versions I knew were the same.
However, your question rang a bell and I did a search in soul source... [

I first heard 'gangster boy' many years ago on a modern soul comp tape (i did say many years ago!) given to me by John Gardiner, a Scottish guy who was visiting Sydney. From memory, the track was listed as a male artist. I fell in love with the tune and for many years was thought to be loopy cause I asked every soul collector/DJ I met if they knew it - no-one did - but that may have been because of my singing............. I did see 'gangster boy' on a sales list from flipside records in 2004.....
20 years on and it's still my top want, don't cha just love the search!
Alex
I can vouch for this. I think you got that tape in the 80s? After it broke you simply sang it to every soulie who visited from Britain year after year after year, but nobody knew it. It drove us nuts and we'd all decided it didn't exist and you'd invented it after forgetting the real tune. But then at the Prestatyn Weekender in early 2005, that tune started going round in my head (but better than I remember it girl
), my stomach suddenly fell to the floor then bounced off the ceiling ...and there was Mr Dave Ripolles on the decks - first time I heard him play - and first time I heard that song properly. It was virtually the first afternoon session, so only a handful in the room. Poor Dave suddenly had a wild Australian woman bolting towards him and screaming 'oh my gawd - it does exist...it does exist'.
Instead of calling security, he handed me the record so I could write down all the words and email them off. To add to his uniqueness, the man modestly said that his brother Jordi had one too (as if it was no big deal). For the icing on the cake, after I heard it and realised how seriously good it was, Dave surprised me with a cd in the post.
It's just one of the many good sounds he plays ...and I'm not just saying that because he's guesting at the next Boomerang
First heard butch play his copy at the 2009 Bamberg weekender, but who knows when he picked it up.
m
ps. Thought the flipside listing was found just after, so maybe 2005? Think we also saw it on Lew Stanleys list a bit after that?

Not much has been said of Lazari Investment Limited who increased the rent by 45% two years ago, but here are a few things I've found out, Chris Lazari 'owns Forty-five acres across London, worth £450 million' and 'Lazari still plans to float the company, perhaps in three to five years' time when he hopes its portfolio will have topped £500m.'.
See: https://chrislazari.crazybillionaire.org/chrislazari.php
And he is 'the 125th richest British man in the Sunday Times Rich List 2010'
See: https://www.greekrichlist.com/category/news/page/2/
To increase the rent of any small business by 45% is completely immoral on every level, especially if you are worth half a billion and must know that it will almost certainly drive a family business to close.
I don't think donations are the answer , the club has lost 100K for the past three years, what is needed is Government or private intervention with a take over that allows Chris Horton to run the club with a realistic rent (not to even mention the unbelievable rates!). With enough publicity and high level and grass roots support I think even at this 11th hour it can happen (it has before).
All the best to everybody!
Sean
It seems The Soulgirl Karen has already grasped this after reading your post, that if Lazari is planning to develop his company into listed company, surely public relations count for a hell of a lot?
These days, major corporations are increasingly answerable to society (e.g. the development of corporate social responsibility initiatives, charity alignment and bending to major protests on work practices, pollution, etc) so letting the parties know how a lot of people feel right now, could just work. But only if numbers are seriously great enough.
Both Lazari and the council would therefore benefit from being reminded of how many people this club matters to. It seems the ideal solution would be that it then "made sense" to him to sell the building at a reasonable cost to a share investment group of 100 Club supporters. That way, instead of donating money to keep things going a little bit longer, people who want to give money can invest it there instead. Can't see the government pitching in for history in its next spending review, but perhaps the council might ease off its rates, if a special cultural/historical listing was possible after MAJOR public support.
And yes, I think I read recently that Oxford Street is one of the most expensive fashion strips in the world, so no surprise about the rent being so high there and that any "reasonable price" to buy the building would be a frightening sum.
Time to ask the experts. My thoughts are merely speculative and my free time to research further is limited these days.

Been on Boomerang, no playlists as yet.

Hi Kev,
As Karen says, last weekends playlists are in Lookbooks
The Boomerang website has all previous playlists (if provided) on this page of our website:

...think we have a little 'updating' job to do this weekend

The Kent albums were essential in developing my love of soul. In 1985 as a spotty 17yr old with no job i bought "Right Back...." (coz it had the snake on it) and its fair to say it changed my life!
Taf.
I bought that LP and an earlier one or two before I attended my first mod/soul night in Sydney on Xmas Eve 1985 ...and I was 17 too.
Kent LPs ruined my life!
Back then in Oz, there were lots of known records I had no other chance of first hearing, but the previously unissued "It's Torture" would get my no. 1 vote because it totally blew me away.
m
-
How dreadful Steve. If you lost it recently it might still turn up - fingers crossed
.
m
p.s. Something similar happened to me about 6 years ago. At my last local do before moving to the other side of the planet, I was understandably a little tired and emotional on the decks and throwing records about a bit (actually, a lot). My friend found my Nicky Newarkers down behind a speaker after she'd dropped down to grab her handbag where she'd hidden it. She'd admitted that for a split second it actually crossed her mind whether she should say anything, but the guilt was suddenly overwhealming. At that moment I wasn't bothered, but after that, every now and then I get into a panic when I swear a certain record has disappeared. It takes forever, but 3rd to 6th time you look - it's back there!
-
-
I agree to ask the buyer what value they want - that way they take the risk if they so wish. Otherwise, inform them what value you will put down and tell them that they run the risk of the 10% GST tax (if that's what it still is in Oz). I never had a problem with the postal service in Australia either and had bought hundreds of vinyl slices from abroad when I lived there (only one record never arrived and that seller was an eBay fraud 'suspect').
Customs are more clued up now and more electronically savy, being able to chase much more than they used to. There are even rumours that a certain government is investigating all PayPal and eBay purchases for back payment of customs charges, in order to raise revenue.
m
ps. The exchange is increasingly favourable for record shopping from Oz though. I remember when I lived there it cost up to $3 to buy a £1. A few months ago, I only got $1.60 for each pound I sold for that annual visit back home - and it's been a steady slide year on year.
