  1. Max celebrated his 65th Birthday at New Century's Soul Night Brookfield Stables on Oct 27th/28th this year

Dunno how old Sam is - but both of them are two of the most approachable guys I've had the pleasure to chat with

I know this has been asked before. Sam turned 66 last August.

We surprised him with a cake on stage and I've booked him again next August, per his request (he'll be 67 at midnight). It was the perfect opportunity for me to book Dave Box same night, so we'll be calling it a METHUSELAH SPECIAL :D . Dave celebrated his 60th early last year (many of you would remember Syl Johnson and Jackie Ross on at the Frobisher for this). Dave's been spinning soul since 1965 I understand. I'm pretty sure that Sam only started with the soul djing gimmick in '68 (damn fine year that! wink.gif ) and I'm sure he'll grow out of it someday laugh.gif

What do you reckon - do guys generally prefer girl groups? Do the "laydees" prefer male vocal groups?.....or is this just a pointless quaetion on a slow Sunday evening? :D

Well I'm a lady (last time I looked  ). Yes, I generally much prefer male groups to female groups

...and I also prefer female solo artists to male solo artists.

I've also found that those dreadful pop sounding male northern soul records are generally preferred by men

and those glorious soul floaters are often preferred by women

  3. Mine is on dark blue Philips and actually doesn't list country of origin at all. Always assumed it was from Oz as I bought it with a load of other Oz 45's.

    Phil

Sincere apologies Phil. I stumbled across my copy last weekend and realise that it does not have an origin on it (just as you say).

We've all known it as an NZ record for years back home - even a rather notable Oz colletor said so when I wanted mine.

And when I did track one down, it was from a NZ dealer and it was listed as being from NZ. I could have sworn it said so on the label - but my detailed memory is pretty rubbish ...obviously!

I'd be pleased and proud if it ever ended up being an Aussie

ps. I had also grabbed my mobile for a quick pic, if anyone is interested

    OUT OF SIGHT (Epic)

also contains one of my all-time favourite songs (and only version for me): "Don't Leave Me Baby"

I really wish Maxine sang this when she performs

  6. It appears a certain Steve Birtwistle is a member of the Soul Source forum....

Can anyone contact him and ask him to contact me ?

If you know his username, you can contact him yourself via PM.

If he can't help you, maybe she has some relatives (she's not listed) - check the phonebook - CLICK HERE

However, as the person may be an innocent party, I suggest you remove her street number and street name. This is a public website and there all allsorts out there collecting data for identity fraud.

I have it on Aussie Philips. Very nice looking thing it is too.

And, as with all my records these days, available to a good home for a good price.

    Phil

As far as I knew, it never came out on Australian. My 45 one is on a blue New Zealand Phillips and clearly states the country of origin in the label perimeter, so I find it strange that Manship lists his one with an "?".

Anybody have a photo of a Non-NZ one if such a thing exists?

    m

ps. contrary to popular belief, we are NOT the same country

  8. As far as I know He's A Rebel was composed by Gene Pitney, originally for Vicki Carr, but Phil Spector got in first with the Crystals.

Yes - and that's an easy one to check:

  9. Where I grew up, I never felt lucky. I felt abnormal - and it's still hard to describe why you can't go to the trendy pub/disco with your family friends or work colleagues. The work's Christmas Party always proved difficult too (er sorry, but I don't dance). I can't even spend too long in a shop that plays dreadful house or pop music - my head starts pounding and my skin starts crawling. (My hearing gets worse each year, so maybe it won't be a problem in later life.)

One of my closest friends back home used to love our radio show and then started taking me to the symphony (certain appropriate concerts), as she recognised the music similarity. Now that really was soulful!

Lots of other music styles can also overlap - jazz, latin, even 'funk'

...but waiting for cheesy motown in desperation at the next wedding I go to, just isn't my bag.

    you think we're Lucky?

    Not really

...it's an illness, where constant medication of good soul music merely controls the symptons - but will never cure you!

  10. Would you buy, lots of records at the lower end of the price range or just a few big ticket numbers, bearing in mind he has got rid of his whole collection so is starting from scratch.

If he doesn't want to be a tosser and please others, then the answer is simple:

    Buy what you love!

If I ever had the misfortune of having to rebuild my collection and had a certain amount to do it with, then I'd write a list of all my favourites in order and start at the top until you hit about 150% of the value. Chances are, you won't buy all your records quick (unless you're prepared to pay too much) and you may not find some for years, so have a few in reserve. Plus it might be nice to earn some interest while you wait and enjoy the hunt

Walking in with a fist full of cash and getting all you want, cheapens it a bit - coz part of the emotional tie with my vinyl comes from the pain of saving for it and not letting many get away :D

    m

  11. I agree with you, it does seem to resemble Northern dancing C.1975/6 crossed with jazz dancing C.1978/9. I prefer it when they actually do it in time to the music however! The first clip resembles drunken students leaping around to a Madness record ...

Reminds me of skanking (rude boys) meets 20's/30's Lindy Hop or Charleston dance

I must admit, I admire anyone with coordination and energy (coz I have neither) and hope it catches on just to get kids exercising and fit.

  12. What if the rare soul scene evolved/developed in such a way that the central focus of the scene, geographically speaking , was centred somewhere OUTSIDE the UK ;

Ooops, excuse me George (and all). I only read your header which said "NS" (Northern Soul). I didn't realise you actually meant "rare soul" as you state above in your first post.

So ignore my last post, because I can't really have an opinion about 'rare soul' as I have no idea how many rare sounds the Americans still have

    m

ps. don't go upsetting the British - I've gotta live here!

  13. I've been to numerous soul nights in many countries and must admit that outside the UK and for what I've experienced, the Germans are high up there (imho) for the depth of their DJ's boxes and locations around their country - plus Marc's 17th anniversary soul night in Berlin this year must be the icing on their cake :)

Must say, I'm bemused with previous posts that name other countries in support of their soul scene - but then also name UK DJ's who play there as evidence :D

IMHO, the UK is in no danger of losing it's focus (if they even care :P ) due to the numbers and locations of NS nights in the UK - BUT even more so, what the uk also has is the fact that others (and themselves) follow certain DJ's or sounds that have been "played" on the NORTHERN SOUL SCENE in ..........the uk!

It reminds me how it used to frustrate us Aussies how the English there, would generally only play tunes once (or because) they became (or were) "played" on the uk scene - and I've seen it since in Europe too - althought obviously the idea of 'breaking' a sound has caught on a bit more everywhere, well since the soul internet lists grew with guidelines on DJing  )

BUT Quite frankly - I don't want aaaaaaanywhere to be the headquarters of Northern Soul,

    - because by having a HQ, we're also saying that NS is something like a corporation (time to duck politics again, eh? ) - instead of being just 1 to 3 nights a week out for some (hopefully good) soul music.

    m

  14. I've got about 20 different tracks on there so I dont overkill any.

    know what you mean

But mine were an accident, as I was trying to load some old favourites in the MP3 player of my phone and they landed in ringtones file instead  . Before that, I always found ringtones annoying, especially at work - and I never wanted to be one of "those people"

Now I tend to prefer these two on mine:

    - still my alltime favourite sound: TRY-EULA COOPER or

    - a great powerful starter: BEAUTIFUL HEAVEN-SHADOWS

I still feel like a bit of a goose when someone rings me on my personal mobile, but surely it's just good character building tongue.gif

    m

  15. Sorry Paul, I can't agree with you there. The Mar-keys is pants to my ears

    Phil.

Whilst JT Rhythm was popping up now-and-then on eBay some time ago (so I would have got it if I wanted it - one went for a damn good price too!), I was desperate for the Mark-keys version ...and made Sam sell me his.

I really like it when I want something others don't, especially when it's really hard to get! :wicked:

  16. and it turned out to be Mr. Steve Heywood from Selby. What a nice guy he is.

Steve's a close mate of my husband and travels to soul do's with us sometimes - including that night. You're right, he's a nice guy. I'll let him know about your post and I'm sure young Natalie appreciates your kindness too.

  17. I just had a query about tickets and apparently www.seetickets.com are just waiting on one last bit of technical stuff and they should be on sale later this afto. To get the right gig just key in any of the artists names, or Kent's 25th.

Ace will have them on sale early next week.

Great! I saw the flyer posted up on the weekend (think you've just added another copy in the gallery) and stuck it right in the diary. Worth taking the day off work for this and travelling down early. I bought my first Kent LP's in Australia, while I was still at school ...and they ruined my life!

Maxine ....ooo, I'm so excited!!!

Normally I find ebay a private thing and would not send up a link or discuss it on list.

However, I just wondered how many people have sent the guy $2,000 who was advertising another mint copy of the above record. It has now been removed off ebay ->

It bore such a similar resemblance to the ebay auction mentioned above (pictures of both sides were exactly the same, description same, heading exactly the same...) and you could not even see the counter number, so you were obviously the first in  .

The guy had the record listed for auction $1, but if you agreed to his bidding rules after you emailed him, you could buy a mint copy for only $2,000.

The seller was RAZMOCHA (feedback 658)

Got all this info down whilst typing this, then refreshed the page and it disapeared after being removed! :)

Thought all my Christmases had come at once, until my CSI head firstly noticed that it only had two days to run (been away, so only saw it), then then rest followed. However, I'll kick myself if somebody posts up that they got this copy :(

If link doesn't work, it was item 270154515938:

This listing (270154515938) has been removed or is no longer available.

  19. My knees aren't the best and never liked having records on 'show' so I had a bespoke cabinet made for most of my 45s. A mate came across a guy who made them for a record company back home. It was deep because it had draws that fit in instead of records single stacked across in shallow shelves, so the quantity looked much less too.

The best bit was that each draw came out and you could sit on a chair and comfortably put it on your lap near the player. Or sit on a lounge and flick through in comfort. The cabinet looked nothing like a record store with the right varnish and handles, so visiting friends and family didn't think you were "weird" (as my cousin said when I accidently left some draws open one day). Also, these cabinets are so sturdy that 2 people struggle to lift each carcass and the draws are 20mm MDF .

Since the move here, I use a mix of boxes stacked away. For me, I don't use my records often here, so they don't need to be handy. There's record dj boxes, a cheap pine blanket box with carboard boxes for 25 or 50 45's stacked inside, but I also bought some great plastic 45 storage boxes from the USA - >CLICK HERE<. They're a real b** to put together, but worth it. The smaller ones might even work well on open shelves with a cover over for privacy

Thing is, you need to think how you'll use them and how often you want to dust them... and then there's the other consideration: how much you want to spend

  20. Max

    and still going strong

    - and also one of the kindest and loveliest people I have ever met and spent time with (and I don't give out many compliments).

Even before that, it's MAXINE a million times over for me.

It's her voice that does it to me. I wish I could have chosen some of her material, as her passionate voice was never fully exploited due to her incredible sensuality some say, but maybe also because she was categorised for commercial appeal.

My personal fav tracks from her recordings are: "Don't Leave Me Baby" and "It's Torture"

...but that woman could make me turn when she starts singing "I'm the kind of girl who likes to take it, s-l-o-w a-n-d e-a-s-y..." and don't even get me started on "Let Me Give You My Lovin'" blush.gif

I jumped on a plane from Sydney to see her in Cleethorpes a few years ago. It was a mind-blowing week away, so emotional. Can't wait for her to return to the UK some very special day.
