Eyup Mandy, which Mr. E are you referring to?? If it's me then yes i am a deejay and will be guesting in the U.K. in September. Six Hills is one gig on the 20th. Reckon you girls will be there eh?? Over here i run a monthly soul night, last month we had John Manship over to guest, BRILLIANT night. Can't wait for this reunion, it's long overdue.
Have a soulful weekend. Best......Tony E. OZ.

I dont mind spins, as sometimes they feel right and you naturally spin as you dance, I hate high kicks and back drops... might have been ok when you were 16 and 9 stone - but at 17 stone aged 50 thier just fookin dangerous! and most of the time they're little to do with the music and folks get them completely out of time. So many people backdrop and kick but cant keep a basic rythm with their feet. Just kinda looks, uncooth and common
Save your acrobatics for the musical breaks in the records dont do them all the way through it looks naff and doesnt fit in with the rythmn
eg Coming to your rescue has some great ones where spins and floorwork fit in nicely...like in the olden days!!!LOL

no way - really dancing etiquette?.. this is a new one on me. I thought you just expressed yourselves how ever you saw fit. One thing that annoys me is people who watch and point at people when they're dancing, OR laugh at people's dancing style. I hate that, it's so rude. Just do what you feel!..
Staff at venue's are bad for this, especially when they've never seen a northern soul night. I told off some young bar staff at Radcliffe Civic for watching, laughing and pointign at people who were dancing.

Jayne the bar staff at our regular night at the robin hood summer bar dance behind the bar and wear Northern soul bowling shirts and some of them are teenagers they love working the function
hence billy the dancing barman on youtube
they also love to watch the dancers

Well l wonder not about the records that have done the rounds and incured a scratch or 10, scribbled names, stickers etc, but l wonder about the rare records that cost thousands of pounds ( Rarity for whatever reason ) and it's most probable that they are owned by collectors and not DJ's, these collectors in some cases then instead of playing them, in fear of damage that may ( god forbid ) occur, protect the said record by placing it behind glass and framing it........l believe records were made to be played and played and played, so how the bloody hell do these very lucky super rich collectors actually #1 get the record on the turntable when the hole in the middle is covered up!!!!!!!! ( now thats what l call a cover up ) and #2 get the needle to play along the grooves through glass !!!!!!!!! uuuuuuuuuummmmmmmm what a dilema.
Sorry lm just being naughty, could'nt help myself.
PMSL
hmmm playing thru glass to protect the vinyl ..now theres a thought

I think in the early days a lot of the 45s were in pretty good nick, having been stored away in warehouses / shops etc and being shipped over here by UK Northern dealers.
But not these days when you are buying off E bay, You are picking up the used 45s that are the copy's that were actually sold to to people at the time !
I was having this conversation with a mate the other day.
IMO Soul fans bought up everything decent from the USA that did not sell in the 60s in the 70s and 80s and in quantity from the warehouses etc, and now we are clearing
up the used issues with the many scratches, felt tip pen marks, stickers, the owners name, strange things written on them etc.
These 45s are the ones I tend to spare a moment looking at and imagining where they have been for the past 40 years !
A playing issue with a bit of ware and tear - Its a case of "If walls could talk" is it not !
I completely understand your wonder !
Mossy
Hiya Mossy
Can you imagine they venues they've visited the buyers /Djs who have touched them ???
and that one person who decides wether it gets played to death or left in a dust filled attic
as you say if walls could talk
I wonder if anyone has written their name on a record to find it came back to them 30/40 years later
wouldnt that have a story to tell

Mandy....
When it happens you'd be better starting a new thread saying so....
I think moving this thread means folk will have to scroll through all these previous posts to "find it's actually happening" rather than "checking out" a new thread stating the occuring event and all the info with it....
So you don't miss interested parties....
Just a thought like....
Soulfully.... Mark
Well hello Mr E
We've never met but I've heard of you
could you be a DJ by any chance??
Yes I totally agree with you
When its a goer we'll start a brand new thread with all the info people need
Don't suppose we need to tell them where eh?? LOL
but yes headlines on events talk wont that be great?
Thanks for your interest

It's when you find records that have been 'personailsed' by their previous owners either by scratching their name in the run-out grooves (seemed to be popular with DJs once upon a time) or writing on the label or sleeve. My favourite is a French EP of the Mar-Keys with 'George from Fulham High Street. I brout (sic) it in 1965' on the cover. I still wonder who George from Fulham is whenever I see that record.
thats exactly what I'm saying
who is/was george
who is
KT?
B Conway?
the crescent soul club?

Ever missed out on a record (or records) and regretted it afterwards?
A mate sent me 5 copies of Joe Tex "I.W.B.F." asking me to sell three at £10 each and to keep two for myself, I tried flogging them but after one soul night I sent them all back to him as I never rated it!!
In a record store in Memphis I picked up - and put down - an alternative version of Johnny Summers's "I.S.Y." on Yorktown and my friend picked it up and paid just $10 for it, I realised soon after my error - to damned late then of course!!
Any more for anymore.
David
I have that particular Joe Tex tune for a ringtone
as they say theres no fool like a soulfool LOL
Absolutely love that tune
I would have give ya a tenner for it

A lot of them do go round and round - Sam's told me that he has had at least 4 Del Larks over the years. Buys one, sells it, buys another one for more, sells it for even more etc etc. Record inflation.....
Records that come here though, stay here! I only ever sold one record and got £1 less for it than I wanted (£4 instead of £5) (this was at Wigan); the experience kind of put me of selling for ever. So ever since I've only ever bought records and leave the selling to others.
So how many babycham crates have you got full of vinyl Steve?

Yep i did put 2 and 2 together and yes Sue will be there in all her glory. Oh and the numbers are creeping up, over 2000 sticky beaks now. Might need to rent an aircraft hanger if it keeps going like this or have the alldayer inside and oustide the Palais. Imagine what 500 soulies dancing in the road would look like eh lol??? BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Would we need council approval ???? See yas. Tony E.
STOP IT TONY!!!
Im gettin those ole goosebumps and the hairs on the back of my neck are dancing
How long you been in Oz mate?
Notts is a very different place these days
I was "in town" with my son (he works for the evening post)
The lace market and hockley buildings have all had facelifts including the grand lady palais herself
the city is looking soo clean and cosmopolitan you might drive past it and not recognise the old place
Rob Smiths shop always looks the same tho (interior like steptoes parlour)
dont forget the road around the palais is barriered off I remember vaulting over it

Often wondered about the "big ticket" tunes (ie - seriously rare - less than 10 known copies) do they just do the rounds with the world's top collectors or once they've got 'em they keep 'em?
Epic
do you think they borrow them to their DJ buddies to play
I dont think so I reckon they'd rather keep them to themselves so it keeps that rarity going
but theres sooooo many bootlegs these days it defeats the object leggers only need one record to boot dont they
