When I first joined here i'd have taken you up on that invitation....apart from the fact i've become a little more savvy after discussions with several learned people on this scene in real life that I should never post up records on here...especailly in the wants section of anything that might be deemed dancefloor worthy...if it is in any way underplayed and good, then copies start exchanging hands quickly, so i'd rather keep my records to myself on here...however you're quite welcome to come along and listen whenever and wherever I play out
oh dear beeks...you certainly know how to put people off you !
....come on show us your tunes !.....as has been said if a BIG dj plays a tune demand and price will go up ...but not if you put a wants list up !....wanna know what i play ? look in ANY past go go children lookback review
Dont forget, part of this scene is a nostalgia scene. Some people dont want educating, they want a good night out listening to records they love. They want to get on that dancefloor and feel like they're 18 again. I'd still say this is the majority of northern soul fans judging the level of attendances at various venues
right or wrong...spot on miss burysoul !!

i still hope its released and will wait to see it before i slag it off....as far as sitting around all day goes my brothers girlfriend is an extra for the bbc and has done work on major films too and shes says theres lots of sitting around in every production so im not surprised youngsters are getting bored.....period mistakes ? its bound to have lots almost every film made..even big budget hollywooders..have....
and i dont think you can tell what a film is gonna look like until the editors (no not the band !)have done there magic...certainly not by watching them film it....
saying all this ofcourse the music and dancing shots used have got to be right....buut after all the previous threads on here they must know that already...

That brings up another interesting point...DJ's that are much younger and have no history of attending the Wigans/etc...they have a completely fresh ear to all the sounds and therefore cannot be swayed by trends? Surely they will be more inclined to base their purchases solely on the quality of the record and not it's past plays.
true but they dont HAVE to be youngsters either....my brother done the niters in the 70s i did the scooter rallies in the 80s BUT the other djs at go go in bristol have nothing to do with soul/scooter scenes although they have been djs and soul fans since the late 70s !....they know a lot of the big tunes but are collecters first and play what they think are quality tunes rather than what is played at other venues.....they dont wish to break into this scene......this gives our nite a freshness not many other nites have...and these are not my words but that of a travelling lifelong soulie....
we are also lucky to have a crowd half full with youngsters who have no real knowledge or experience of the scene so are not bias to top 500 anymore than unknown tracks they just wanna dance.....but i better shut up now cos im wandering off this thread now and will be accused of trying to plug our nite

I think this is one of those soul scene myths - that anyone exists that actually believes that rare = good. It does add to the 'mystique' surrounding a good tune though if it's hard to find, it means that you have to put in some work if you want to find it for yourself, or travel to see a particular DJ if you want to hear it out.
yes !....just as it should be....i have a dilemma this weekend two good nights in my area....one may have more people but the other has a dj i know will play a couple of great tunes that i have not heard ANYWHERE else and are not even in manships guide or website so i cant even hear little bit !!
-
i keep getting confused as to which thread im reading !....top/flop dj
underated dj ??....
basically top/flop is always only ever gonna be down to personal opinion....someone who fills the floor or someone who plays underplayed/new discoveries ?...cos im my experience as a punter (sorry)there is still a BIG majority of dancers who walk on and off the floor depending on if they know the tune or not ,not even giving an unknown a chance....and that is whoever is playing the tune....im not gonna name venues or djs but i have found myself one of only a handful of people on the floor at various soul nites only to suddenly have no room when a top 500 tune comes on...and none of us are gonna name anyone we think is a flop anymore than name bootleg venues in past threads are we...were all far too nice
....
i think on the whole soulsourcers WHO POST are more in the new discovery group BUT although there are many members we are a very small part of the scene as a whole...
most unknown djs only get the chance to play at local dos who have the same faces in the crowd...dont get me wrong these are great nites and personally i'll never turn down the chance of playing anywhere im asked ...but it would be nice to see some unknown names alongside the big djs on the flyers of the nites who are gaurenteed big crowds from ALL over the country...IMO the only way they could 'break into the scene'...

The more I read this thread, the more I hate the word 'punter"..........
But your right, who needs DJ's to dictate the tunes......
I scour the internet, blag cd's from mates, and scrounge mp3's from the lads I know with the sounds. All I can hope when i go out is that a dj with similar taste to mine will play the tunes I like so I can have a dance. Tune wise, I'm educating myself.......
sorry ...soulies !
cant even remember last time i bought a cd !....while i still run up to the dex and ask djs titles( although these are often forgotten by the time i get home )...i 'discover' a lot of new to me tunes by soundfiles either on ebay or dealers websites...
-
well theres always 2 sides to a story and there are lots of good points on this thread ...but things have changed ,back in the day most people relyed on the dj for unknown or unreleased tunes, not today...with the internet most punters can go on either ebay or soul websites and hear tunes the djs havnt heard !!
...dont even need cds !!

soulfusion had a room playing all this type of motown, atlantic etc on saturday and although i only passed through it to get to the toilet it was verry busy all night !!...so some people still love it and fair play to them ...its all soul at the end of the day and still better than alot of the shit made today !.....or am i just getting old cos i sound like me mum when i was a kid !
-
All records are released for the Pop market surely? Especially Motown ones above most others. My point was that Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote a pantheon of great songs and I don't necessarily see TAGIMH as being any different from say, "I Can't Help Myself", "Nowhere To Run", "You Keep Me Hangin' On" etc, etc. Or were ALL Holland-Dozier-Holland songs pop? I just don't get why TAGIMH is that different Bridget/Chris..........

agreed an excellent tune...dont get me wrong cant remember the last time i played it and if i heard it out would walk off the floor cos i like most of you am bored with it but along with 'out on the floor' tainted love' etc it is a great tune...and once when you werent all so judgemental, didnt have the choice of today and were just out to dance and have a good time most of you thought so too...although now it seems cool to deny it !

i like her....got 3 7s...not played them for a while as they were overplayed when i got them a while ago....'feeling free' 'four leaf clover' good dancers, different styles of soul....ok not as good as the 60s productions that influenced them but as good as duffy and ami and although she has had play in 'other' clubs i think she derserved more sucsess than she got...cool vid too

as steve said its about entertaining the people, gotta do your best to get them on the floor hopefully by playing BOTH well known oldies and rarer (not just expensive) largely unknown trax...when i buy a cheap unknown original i ask myself would i dance to this on the first hearing ,has it got that instant foot tapping wow whats this factor !!...if not it doesnt go in my play out box....too many tunes for sale and gigs to widespread to play growers nowadays, its not like wigan or the mecca where a tune can be played week in week out till it breaks IMO...and i dont play tunes just cos i like them !...and ofcouse every crowd and venue is different although you may only play 20 tunes you need a wide selection with you
well known oldies?...sadly that comes down to what i can afford !
a compitition ?....nice idea, cant see it working WAY too many djs...would be a bigger q at the dex than those saddos who think they have the x factor !!...
-
Think I paid less than that for mine earlier in the year, just proves quality doesn't have to be expensive and I think it was in the 2008 MP top 100, play it out quite often
QoFxx
also paid about a tenner and have been playing this all year..a go go fave in bristol....cannot believe more people have not been playing ,this pure quality...great lyrics, melodies ,production the lot....
to be honest surprised this thread is still going !.....only skimmed through the last few pages but whats this about original uk issues not being allowed ??....i understand the bootleg, carver and reissue arguement even on the well pressed maybe even unissued grapevine etc but come on theres f*** all wrong with original 60s released uk soul !....i personally collect us but 2 of the go go djs are uk collecters and trust me they have some beautiful records which are pressed and sound a lot better than a lot of us stuff !... and more expensive !!
-
agree with steves above post and "the more info on label" post also as we have said before generally they sound better but also with the new boots that are copies of original labels ,they are obviously scanned on pcs ,compared to those printed in the 60s/70s they actually look shit even down to the font...doesnt look 60s/70s at all.....kinda like a new gt/et vespa compared to an old gs or rally (sorry if ya not into scoots).....and as with any collector looks are also important....and then as a nice extra theres the investment factor,it will hopefully only ever go up....pay £10 for a new boot and as a secondhand one its immediately only worth a fiver...IMO
-
i thought this thread was about a list of some sort cant remember the last time i saw it !.....sadly seems to have gone the same way as many before it ....round and round for a bit before the negative comes out.....obviously we are all passionate but lets try keep on topic and beeks maybe you should stop saying things just to wind people up...an internet forum is not like chatting over a pint !...damn my teas gone cold again ...bloody soulsource !!
-
agree with that paul its upto the dj and promoter (obviously if its advertised as ovo it should be).....but to those punters who do not care ,just think if every dj played the same cheap boots all the time at every venue you went to and didnt spend their hard earned money and time finding new spins...i reckon even those die hard wigan only soulies who may still be still passionate at the moment about the golden oldies would get bored after a while....just like a lot of the new spin fans are already....which along with the recession would kill the scene off for us all......so it does matter
sorry for the doom and gloom, had a shit week will be better friday evening !!
-
you dont have to spend hundreds to play ovo....this friday i will have over 200 originals in my box some with a book price of £200 although ive not paid more than 50 for any of them....they are there if you look hard enuff and its part of the fun of being a dj on a budget...
and if you dont wanna play your 5000 grand tune then dont you only get to play about 20 tracks anyway you must have that many decent orginals
-
i was born in 67 so i missed the casino etc so yes i agree you were lucky but although i bought my first northern tune in 78 (i was only 11 and living in norwich)a year later two tone happened and this was also a great time to be a teen and when i see youngsters today getting into ska i feel lucky i was born when i was...also when i go on a scooter rally i feel lucky to have been going on rallies in the 80s in its heyday with thousands of others...again a great time to be in your early twenties....i agree with other comments i cant see what todays kids will feel lucky about !!
but we are also lucky to be into a music and a scene that seems to refuse to die and where your age doesnt matter...long may it continue

The Gladys knight was in an American one- In your letter you didnt think it was the bristol postie- Now you are having second thoughts.
Sent off the claim form last week - Ill let you know what they say
Regards Steve
P.S Was that the Sunlovers - with the orange label at the buy it now price? If it was thought about getting it as a copy for trade but forgot about it!
hi steve...dont think it was the postie who comes to me but one of the idiots in the sorting office who throw things around and stack heavy objects on top of fragile ones !!....was gladys in a box ? cant remember but believe you which makes me have even less faith in the post office employees...!!
yes it was the buy it now copy....as it turned out shame you forgot...at least a good record would still be about
-
would you believe it !...in twenty years of getting tunes through the post without a prob ive now had my second break in a month !!!.....this time it was the sunlovers/never make the grade a near mint original...the corner of the packaging was creased and as i pulled the record out of the sleeve i had a little crescent shaped bit in my hands....NOOOOOO !!!.....books at about 100/150 luckily i only payed 35 which i should get back but gutted again....
starting to get paronoid thinkin i have an enemy in the bristol sorting office.....or maybe its just a crazy cd nut who hates vinyl
thing is the day before i had 2 common cheapies (back st/edwin and new girl/accents) arrive fine...bloody typical
and despite gettin tunes from all over the globe both breakages were from the uk...maybe uk sellers should start useing the boxes like overseas sellers instead of the card envelopes ??
sickening when you look at a tune thats been kept in such good nick for over forty years to be broken by some useless c*** not doin his job right....was obvious what was inside and just in case they were really thick it also had a 'fragile please be careful 'sticker on it....
