I missed this on its release and have waited a long time to see it.
Morgan Neville’s 2014 Academy award wining documentary following the lives of female backing singers for leading rock artists includes Mary Clayton , Judith Hill and Darlene Love. It also features Patti Austin, Gloria Jones , Stevie Wonder. and Luther Vandross.
Great quote from backing singer Judith Hill “ When you are a backing singer it can be a springboard but it can easily become a quicksand if thats not what you want to do” .
Former backing singers who are not featured include:
Witney Houston, Mary J Blige . John Legend . Angie Stone, PP Arnold. Chaka Khan, Lou Rawls.
No doubt you’ll be able to add to the list. I guess there is a whole conversation to be had about rock music drawing on Black ..predominantly female singers. Over to you..
